Chapter 39: A Competition between Hand Speed and Eyesight (Please Read Later)
by SunflowerObito was a bit annoyed.
If Kakashi didn’t participate, then his first place would be meaningless.
Obito wanted to defeat Kakashi under Rin Nohara’s gaze to wipe away his previous shame and take first place. Without Kakashi, Obito wouldn’t be too happy even if he got first place.
His obsession with winning the Youth Ninjutsu Competition was entirely caused by Kakashi.
Back then, in front of Rin Nohara, Kakashi strongly won first place with a score that crushed him, turning Obito’s championship speech into an empty boast.
Obito had always remembered this, but he never had the ability to win until now.
Now that he had the ability to win everything, he found that his opponent had already moved on, which made Obito very unhappy.
“No, I have to make Kakashi participate in the competition!” The more Obito thought about it, the more he felt that a competition without Kakashi was simply not going to work.
“We can wait until after school to ask Kakashi if he has any thoughts about participating,” Rin Nohara suggested.
“I can go with you. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Kakashi.”
Although the three of them had a very good relationship, ever since Kakashi graduated, their opportunities to meet had decreased.
She and Obito, as students, needed to attend school every day, and Kakashi, as a Ninja, also needed to go on missions.
“Okay.” Obito nodded, thinking Rin Nohara’s idea was good.
Obito asked Muzuki for a day off before school ended. He wouldn’t go to Muzuki’s place after school today; he would resolve Kakashi’s matter first.
After school, Rin Nohara and Obito went directly to Kakashi’s house.
Kakashi’s house was not in the Main urban area, but in the suburbs next to the Main urban area. Although it wasn’t as prosperous, it wasn’t as crowded as the Main urban area.
Rin Nohara and Obito had been to Kakashi’s house before, and had even been invited in for meals.
Looking at the large, flat-roofed, sloped-roof house that came into view, they knew they had arrived.
Their luck was good. Kakashi wasn’t on a mission today. When they arrived at Kakashi’s house, he was practicing in the yard.
Kakashi, holding a silver Chakra short blade, cut off the head and limbs of a scarecrow in two or three moves.
Seeing his friends arrive, Kakashi exhaled softly, reinserted the Chakra short blade into his back, and asked,
“Why are you here?”
“It’s been a long time since we played together. We all missed you, so we came to find you,” Rin Nohara said with a smile.
Obito was not as polite as Rin Nohara and asked directly,
“Kakashi, the Youth Ninjutsu Competition is about to start. Are you going to sign up to participate?”
“Youth Ninjutsu Competition?” Kakashi thought for a moment and realized that this was a civilian competition he had participated in out of boredom when he was still in school.
“No, I’m not interested,” Kakashi replied indifferently.
In his opinion, that kind of competition was for children to play. The prize for first place was just a slightly more exquisite Kunai.
Even when he was at the Ninja Academy, he only participated out of boredom, let alone now.
Obito’s face fell. Kakashi refused too decisively.
“Why? Didn’t you participate before?” Obito asked, unwilling to give up.
He really wanted Kakashi to participate in the competition.
“Back then, I was a student at the Ninja Academy. Now I am a Chunin,” Kakashi said, pointing to the Ninja headband on his head.
Obito felt Kakashi was hinting at something. He was also a student back then, and he was still a student now…
“What does Chunin or not Chunin matter? There’s no age limit anyway,” Obito continued.
“Do I have to directly say that I’m not interested in this kind of children’s play competition?” Seeing Obito trying to pester him, Kakashi said mercilessly.
Obito was getting a bit heated. What children’s play competition? It was clearly the Youth Ninjutsu Competition!
“I’m also participating in the competition, Kakashi! You’re not afraid of losing to me, are you?!” Obito, a bit flustered, also started to become more aggressive.
“Lose to you? Have you ever won against me?” Kakashi said expressionlessly.
“I… I…” Obito frantically searched his memory, and to his surprise, he found that he had indeed never won against Kakashi.
Discovering this frustrating fact, Obito’s face couldn’t help but flush a little more.
“Kakashi, don’t be smug. I’m not the same as before now,” Obito said, putting his hands on his hips, indicating that he was no longer what he used to be.
Kakashi looked at Obito for a moment: goggles, tracksuit, a silly smile on his face with hands on his hips. He was just too goofy.
Kakashi honestly said, “I don’t see it.”
“Konoha foul language!” Obito couldn’t hold back anymore.
“You two, it’s rare to see you, and you’re still the same as before,” Rin Nohara said, covering her mouth and chuckling as she watched the scene.
This scene had played out countless times in front of Rin Nohara.
Obito loved to compete with Kakashi, but Obito was always the one who ended up losing.
Obito took a deep breath, temporarily calming himself. He suddenly remembered his teacher, Muzuki.
“If it were Muzuki Sensei, what method would he use?” Obito fell into thought.
To make him practice more seriously, Muzuki made him do an extra problem for every time he was hit. Although practicing was difficult, doing problems was even more uncomfortable, so he chose the lesser of two evils and practiced more seriously to reduce the number of times he was hit.
“Lesser of two evils…” Obito suddenly had a flash of inspiration and thought of a solution.
“Kakashi, didn’t you say I couldn’t win against you? Then do you dare to make a bet with me?” Obito said with a provoking smile.
Kakashi’s expression remained unchanged, and he said indifferently,
“Bet on who gets first in the competition? Do you think I’d fall for such a stupid provocation?”
Going to such a meaningless competition was not as good as reading more books.
“Of course not. Don’t you think you’re great? Then do you want to try whether your eyesight is better or my hand speed is faster?” Obito said.
“If you win, I won’t talk about the competition anymore and I’ll treat you to ramen five times. If you lose, you just need to participate in the competition.”
As long as Kakashi didn’t agree, he would keep pestering him to participate in the Youth Ninjutsu Competition. Then Kakashi would naturally agree to this simpler and faster challenge.
Kakashi didn’t rush to agree but asked, “How exactly do we compete?”
Obito plucked a leaf from a tree next to Kakashi’s house, placed it on his palm, and said,
“It’s simple. I’ll quickly switch the leaf between my left and right hands, and you just have to guess which hand the leaf is in. Isn’t it simple?”
Kakashi thought for a moment and felt that Obito’s hand speed couldn’t possibly be faster than his eyes, so he directly agreed.
He knew Obito’s personality. He might pester him until night.
It was better to use this simple test to let Obito know the difference between them.
Obito pushed his hand speed to the limit, wildly shaking his left and right hands, and only stopped after about five minutes.
“Right hand.” Kakashi directly pointed to Obito’s right hand, where the leaf was hidden.
“I really don’t know where you got the courage to compete with me on this,” Kakashi said with some disappointment.
He had thought Obito’s hand speed would be faster, but it was just this. The leaf never left his sight.
Hearing Kakashi’s words, Obito instead laughed and asked,
“Kakashi, are you sure it’s this hand? Once you’re sure, you can’t change it.”
“Trying to trick me? It’s the right hand. Hurry up and open it.” Kakashi didn’t change his mind because of Obito’s laugh. He only thought Obito was bluffing.
“Then I’ll open it.” Obito slowly opened his right hand.
I’m attending a funeral today, so I wrote this a bit hastily. If there are any issues, please let me know, and I’ll revise them later.
