Chapter Index

At the entrance of Class 3.

“Another sunny day,” Xi Bao exclaimed, entering the classroom with the morning light, “Okay now, class begins.”

“Why does your class smell like spicy strips?”

    “Li Hua, stand up!”

“It’s not me, teacher.” Li Hua stood up with a bewildered expression, his lips red, “Do you have any proof?”

“Proof?” Xi Bao, wearing a pink down jacket and slim-fit grey culottes, sneered.

“Turn around and let everyone see.”

Instantly, the class burst into laughter.

Jiang Nian chuckled, “Hua, who stuffed spicy strips into your mouth?”

Ma Guojun’s chubby face crinkled into a slit as he laughed, “Kid, you didn’t even wipe your mouth after eating?”

Li Hua wiped his mouth, leaving a red oil streak on the back of his hand.

    “What the heck?”

At the back of the classroom, by the blackboard.

The king returned to his hometown.

Xi Bao was dressed exceptionally pink and tender today, like an eighteen-year-old girl.

“OK, everyone take out your test papers and look at the vocabulary fill-in-the-blanks.”

Starting with grammar, the luxury of an old teacher.

Since the atmosphere had just been enlivened, it was important to take advantage of the students’ energy and finish the grammar section in one go.

Otherwise, if it dragged on, no one would listen.

After the first class ended, a large portion of the class once again slumped onto their desks. Xi Bao glanced at them, then left in her platform shoes.

After the bell, the second class began.

The students in the class forced themselves to ‘boot up’ one by one, their eyes hazy with sleep. They looked wilted, like eggplants hit by frost.

“So sleepy.” Yang Qiming’s mind was a bit muddled; he had chatted with “Lu Xuan” all night, only to realize later that he had chatted with the wrong person.

Lu Xuan had changed her avatar yesterday during evening self-study, from a lonely girl looking at the sea to a cute cat.

Yang Qiming had only added QQ in the evening and hadn’t added a note. After evening self-study, he held his phone and found that the chat window was gone.

In the message list, he looked for the avatar, opened a blank page, and just chatted.

They talked about everything from poetry and prose to life ideals until past four in the morning. Just as he thought he could start talking about something more explicit, a sudden urge to pee struck him.

As he got up to pee, the other person sent a message.

    “Little brother, you’re quite humorous.”

At that moment, he suddenly realized something. He clicked on the other person’s profile, looked carefully, and then checked her personalized signature.

    The sky fell.

A distant cousin from the countryside, added on QQ without a note.

Just a little bit, just a little bit more.

He was about to open his mouth.

In the latter half of the night, Yang Qiming couldn’t sleep for a second. It wasn’t until half past five that he finally fell into a deep sleep, sleeping for a total of one hour.

Now, the after-effects of staying up late caught up to him.

“Did you go stealing?” Zhou Yuting glanced at her deskmate, Yang Qiming, “Sleeping during morning self-study, and still sleeping between classes.”

Before Yang Qiming could speak, Xi Bao clapped her hands on the podium.

    “Alright, no talking during class.”

Then, she held the test papers but didn’t start lecturing immediately. Instead, she paused for a moment and first shared a bit of gossip.

“Hey, did Teacher Liu tell you about the inter-class football match?”

Upon hearing this, the previously drowsy class,

especially the boys, instantly woke up. Their eyes widened, and their expressions visibly brightened.

    “Is that true?”

“Why a football match? Isn’t there an inter-class basketball match?”

“It must be because basketball causes broken bones, and the school leaders are most afraid of trouble. Compared to that, football is much safer.”

“People in the next class also said they heard it’s in response to policy.”

“Who in our class can play football?”

“Those few who always play during PE class, who else?”

The class chattered, and Xi Bao didn’t stop them. Instead, she watched with a smile, even participating in the conversation for a few sentences.

After about five minutes, she clapped her hands again.

“OK, let’s discuss the football match after class. Take out your test papers and look at passage D, which option has a problem?”

Jiang Nian was lowering his head, working on a problem, when Li Hua suddenly poked him. He looked up, puzzled.

    “What’s up?”

“Are you playing football in Acquired PE class?” Li Hua looked a bit awkward, “I actually have a dream of becoming a football prince.”

“Football prince? What kind of soft thing is that?” Jiang Nian was bewildered, “Is it like a football baby? Dancing in a jersey with a steel wool ball on your head?”

“red stone! red stone!” Li Hua’s face turned red. “I’m for the football cause, do you know what will happen to the national team without me?”

    Jiang Nian: “They’ll win.”

“red stone! red stone!!” Li Hua felt extremely insulted. The national team wouldn’t always be bad, but they would win without him.

    Damn it!

It was a curse more malicious than a single-celled organism!

“Li Hua, stand up, stand at the back!” Xi Bao called Li Hua up, “So eager to talk, why don’t you lecture then?”

Li Hua stood up, clutching his test paper, muttering stubbornly in his seat.

“If I really lectured, you wouldn’t be happy.”

“What did you say?!!!” Xi Bao immediately got angry, “Don’t just stand at the back, come up and stand on the podium!”

Jiang Nian was overjoyed, especially seeing Li Hua’s cowardly yet stubborn look; he was almost laughing like an idiot.

“Li Hua is crazy, he said he wants to create a new English class.”

After the second class, during the break when all third-year students ran downstairs for exercise.

Wang Yuhe, mixed in the crowded staircase, suddenly turned and whispered to Chen Yunyun next to her.

“Yunyun, can’t I go play football?”

Chen Yunyun was still silently memorizing words in her palm, and paused for a moment at her words.

“It’s not that you can’t, it’s just that there are too few girls in our school’s third year who play football, not enough to form a decent team.”

“Oh.” Wang Yuhe’s mood instantly dropped. Her lips moved twice, “Alright, then I won’t play during PE class.”

Chen Yunyun felt a pang of sympathy and, after thinking for a moment, said,

“You can find Jiang Nian. Let him teach you to play. I remember he once said he played in a match when he was in first year.”

    “Him?”

Wang Yuhe was going down the stairs, just about to say something. She was instantly swept away by the descending crowd, forced to separate from Chen Yunyun.

It wasn’t until they reached the first floor that the two best friends reunited.

“Jiang Nian played football before?” Wang Yuhe stopped with one foot on the Yin and Yang line cast by the sun and the teaching building, and pressed down hard.

    Please… you… collect _ (six \ \ \ nine \ \ \ book \ \ \ bar!)

    “Mm.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?” Wang Yuhe wondered.

Chen Yunyun was stumped by this question, pursed her lips, and decided to push the blame onto Jiang Nian.

    “He deliberately didn’t tell you.”

“Oh, I knew it!” Wang Yuhe clenched her fists, then hesitated, “But, will he take me?”

“What if I play better than him? Jiang Nian will definitely be so angry he’ll be embarrassed.”

Chen Yunyun glanced at Wang Yuhe, suppressing the upward curve of her lips.

    “He won’t.”

On the crimson track of the sports field, the broadcast blared.

The various classes loosely lined up, their class flags waving in the sunlight, and sharp whistles divided the sports field into two sections.

Class 3 was located near the exit, existing as if a general outside the capital could disregard the emperor’s orders.

Li Qingrong gently looked back, her gaze sweeping over Jiang Nian, who was talking to Chen Yunyun, her clear eyes as still as autumn water.

Her skin was very fair, not a glowing white, but a white like frost, set against the backdrop of the white-gold sunlight.

Like the purest ice cream, three-dimensional and translucent.

It wasn’t until she turned her head, a hint of ripple appearing in her downcast eyes.

“Class monitor, what’s wrong?” Nie Qiqi sweetly leaned over, almost wanting to transform into the class monitor’s octopus-like accessory.

“Nothing.” Li Qingrong’s tone was very faint.

“Oh, okay.” Seeing that the class monitor wasn’t actually in a bad mood, Nie Qiqi continued, “Can I participate in the pitch-pot game?”

    Pitch-pot?

Li Qingrong remembered, that small item at the back of the classroom. The homeroom teacher had brought it over before the joint exam.

She remembered Jiang Nian didn’t play.

Before Li Qingrong could answer, the executive class vice-monitor, Cai Xiaoqing, reached out and pulled the vixen away.

“Come, come, sign up with me.”

“What are you doing, let go, let go.” Nie Qiqi struggled, “I’m signing up with the class monitor, not with you.”

Cai Xiaoqing said, “One spot for a boy and one for a girl per class, you won’t have a chance.”

“What about the boys’ side? Jiang Nian also throws super accurately.” Nie Qiqi was unconvinced, “Don’t the boys also actively sign up?”

“They…” Cai Xiaoqing didn’t know what to say.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over them.

Li Qingrong avoided their gazes, smoothed the strands of hair at her temples that had been ruffled by the wind, and asked in a flat tone,

    “…Who has the registration form?”

Jiang Nian ran four laps, his face not red and his breathing steady. While lining up to be dismissed, he turned to look at the football field.

It had been a long time since he played football.

He was bored in his first year of high school, but at that time, he didn’t quite understand his parents, and his relationship with Xu Qianqian had just begun to ease.

As a result, he was in a bad mood for the entire first year.

Every day was either playing basketball or football, and he had a lot of bad romantic encounters. He was either being chased by lecherous girls trying to take advantage of him or being secretly hugged by infatuated girls.

The bad romantic encounters of his first year couldn’t be cut off, and in his second year, he couldn’t win over Xiao Zhou. Of course, Xiao Zhou also dropped some gold coins, which was a bit of an inversion of Yin and Yang.

Who told him he was poor, willing but powerless.

Sometimes life is just that abstract, primarily about the more you want, the less you get, and instead, unintentional actions lead to unexpected success.

The second year was like looking at flowers through a fog, like a dream.

He looked at the football field, covered in withered grass, with bald patches revealing brown soil, looking extremely messy.

He thought to himself, maybe I should participate, even a small prize would be good.

Given the school’s usual behavior, there might even be prize money. The championship was hard to say, but the top three would definitely get a few hundred yuan, which was a huge sum.

And he could tease the elementary schoolgirl; she was too easy to play with.

    After the exercise ended.

Jiang Nian, Li Hua, and Ma Guojun went upstairs together, suddenly noticing several people moving tables out of the Class 3 classroom.

The three of them exchanged glances, all seeing surprise in each other’s eyes.

    “Moving so fast?”

“Any slower, and the physics results will be out this afternoon, damn it.” Jiang Nian stared at the stairwell.

At the end of the corridor, Yu Tongjie left only a back view of him moving a stool. Several people from Class Zero helped him move his desk and book basket.

Suddenly, Yu Tongjie, as if by a ghostly impulse, looked back.

His gaze pierced through the noisy crowd in the corridor, meeting Jiang Nian’s directly, his eyes filled with a blatant hatred.

    “What’s he doing?”

“Maybe… looking for his dad.” Jiang Nian walked into the classroom, “Come on, let’s go see your new round-faced, bearded classmate.”

Li Hua: “red stone! It must be a beautiful girl.”
