Chapter Index

The fantasy of a lopsided student, bad at English, but a genius at math. Everyone looks up to him, teachers favor him, and the class beauty kneels before him.

In reality, he’s bad at English and terrible at math.

Even though the English teacher had called him out last semester, this semester, she still couldn’t connect him with a score of 140, feeling like he was a nobody.

Returning to his seat, students in front, behind, and to his sides all turned to look at him.

Jiang Nian felt a bit embarrassed, coughed, spread out his test paper, and pretended nothing had happened.

Although the English teacher had repeatedly forbidden chatting, it couldn’t stop the enthusiasm of the students around him. One by one, they looked at Jiang Nian with wide eyes, full of disbelief.

“Holy crap, you really memorized all 3500 words?”

    “Yep, just name any word.”

“Jiang Nian, can I borrow your test paper to look at?” The girl in front of him asked shyly, “I want to see how you wrote your essay.”

    “Uh, sure.”

In the next group, Zhou Yuting clutched a corner of her English test paper, feeling as if she had fallen into an ice cave. Jiang Nian scored 573? Forty points higher than her? Was there still hope for her to get into the advanced class?

In principle, it was survival of the fittest; everyone who passed the line had hope. But in practice, parallel classes usually only had one person who could advance.

The reason was simple: all the good students were sent out. The class’s level would drop from being at the top of a parallel class to the bottom. What kind of class would the homeroom teacher be left with then?

So, regarding the advancement policy, every homeroom teacher was quite conservative. If a student was truly exceptional, their parents would demand it anyway, so it was better to just let them go.

If there was only a chance for advancement, the homeroom teacher would generally adopt a gentle conversational approach.

“Are you sure you want to go, young man? What lies ahead is Hell!”

“What are you, driving a Mazda, doing crashing a party of Mercedes and Rolls-Royces? If you can’t keep up, you might even get sent back.”

Usually, at this point, the student would back down.

There would be two more major exams after advancing. If the grades fluctuated too much, they would be advised to withdraw. They didn’t care if you cheated your way in or were just having an off day; everyone would be advised to withdraw.

It was glorious to move your desk into the Olympiad class, but it would be too shameful to move your desk back to your original class.

Thinking of this, Zhou Yuting couldn’t help but clench her fists. Her five fair fingers unconsciously curled together, knuckles white and slightly trembling.

One English exam ruined her Olympiad dream.

A new class, a new persona, new admirers—the thought of those rigid, bespectacled academic overachievers not being able to grovel at her feet made Zhou Yuting grit her teeth.

Jiang Nian! It was all his fault!

“Why did you want to see me?”

At noon, in a cool corner of the basketball court, under the lush shade of trees.

Jiang Nian held a red bean popsicle, unwrapped it, licked it once, and then looked up curiously at Song Xiyun, who had forcefully dragged him out.

“So mysterious, you can tell me now, right?”

He hadn’t had much contact with Song Xiyun before, due to Xu Qianqian. Plus, he’d been running around a lot for the diagnostic exam recently, so they’d become somewhat familiar.

“What did you do last night?” Song Xiyun’s expression was unnatural.

Jiang Nian looked at her suspiciously, thinking, what was with her expression, like a rich wife catching her husband cheating, wanting to question him but afraid of divorce?

A new play storyline? Pinru’s wardrobe?

Sister, we seem to be innocent.

Song Xiyun was wearing a loose white summer school uniform and light-colored pants. She was a cute, pretty girl, with a beauty score of eighty or higher, but her attire was a bit simple.

    No, that’s not allowed.

“Nothing, I was in the classroom for evening self-study,” he said, slurping his popsicle.

“Liar!” Song Xiyun’s face flushed, “You weren’t in the classroom at all, you clearly went out!”

I was indeed not on Shenyang Avenue, the era of extreme performances has ended.

Jiang Nian slurped his popsicle, starting to answer haphazardly, “How did you know I scored 573?”

    Who asked you that!

Because a father knows his daughter best.

“Wait, you scored 573?” Song Xiyun looked shocked, paused for a moment, and then asked, “How much? How much did you score?”

Jiang Nian grinned, slurping his popsicle.

“Since you asked so sincerely, then I’ll…”

Song Xiyun calculated with her fingers, “Then you’re going to be promoted to the advanced class, aren’t you? Even if the score line is high, it can’t be higher than 550. Your score is already considered mid-range in the science Olympiad class.”

    “Yes,” Jiang Nian slurped.

Song Xiyun was speechless, “Can you put down your popsicle? You’re making me feel sick.”

“Want a taste?” He offered it.

“No, thank you,” Song Xiyun composed herself, remembered her purpose, took a deep breath, and asked, “Last night, did you sign up for a gym membership?”

“Holy crap, you’re stalking me?” Jiang Nian was startled, “Obsessive crush?”

“Stop being so narcissistic!” Song Xiyun couldn’t keep up with Jiang Nian’s bizarre humor and started to feel sorry for Xu Qianqian. She wondered how her best friend could stand him.

She certainly couldn’t; she was so angry she wanted to throw up.

“Then how did you know I went to the gym to get a membership?” Jiang Nian seemed to return to normal, squinting at the hot playground under the blue sky and white clouds.

Warm breezes blew in gusts, and his mood was cheerful.

“Aren’t you surprised I know you got a membership?” she countered.

“Why?” Jiang Nian was a bit distracted.

“Because you got the card from my mom.”

“Oh, huh?” Jiang Nian looked up, “That was your mom? I thought the auntie looked familiar. But your mom has a much better temper than you.”

Song Xiyun was a bit shy again, “I just wanted to ask, why did you suddenly get a membership and spend so much money on classes?”

“To work out, I didn’t know that was your mom.”

“How do you explain buying classes? You don’t have time for classes at all, do you?” Song Xiyun pursed her lips, “And with your physique, and being on the basketball team, what kind of workout do you need?”

“There’s no rule that basketball players can’t work out.” Jiang Nian stopped mid-sentence, looked up at Song Xiyun, and saw her cautious and doubtful eyes.

At that moment, he seemed to realize something.

“No, sis, you don’t think I’m interested in your mom, do you? Holy Hell, are you that dense?”

“What?” Song Xiyun, her thoughts exposed, immediately broke down, her face turning crimson. “No, that’s not what I meant, I just happened to know.”

“My mom is worried you won’t have time for classes and all the money will be wasted. Um, I think so too. Your money doesn’t grow on trees. If you want to cancel the classes…”

“No need, don’t worry about it,” Jiang Nian waved his hand. “I was going to get a membership and buy classes anyway. If not from your mom, then from someone else.”

    “Really?” Song Xiyun asked.

“Uh-huh, if there’s nothing else, you may withdraw.”

“Hmph.” Song Xiyun’s hanging heart finally settled. “Hehe, I’m leaving then. I have to tell Qianqian that you scored 573.”

Looking at Song Xiyun’s retreating back, Jiang Nian was thoughtful.

This person is a bit dirty-minded.
