Chapter Index

In the afternoon, the class atmosphere was quite restless.

As soon as the third period ended, Homeroom Teacher Liu hurried in through the front door of the classroom with his head down. Before he even reached the podium, he pulled out his phone.

“I’m going to take up some of your listening practice time. The listening session isn’t starting that soon, right?”

Someone from the class responded, “Teacher, there’s no listening practice on Fridays.”

“Alright, I have some things to discuss.” Homeroom Teacher Liu scrolled down on his phone, his voice gradually getting louder. “Regarding tomorrow’s Joint Exam, there are a few things.”

“First is the exam room setup. This will be handled by today’s students on duty, along with the class monitor, the Study Committee Member, and the Labor Committee Member.”

“Which group is on duty today? Stand up and let me see.”

With a rustle, the members of Group Six, where Jiang Nian was, stood up sparsely.

“Li Hua, you are responsible for leading your group members to clean the classroom,” Homeroom Teacher Liu began to assign responsibilities. “Follow the Study Committee Member’s instructions and get the exam room set up.”

“The Study Committee Member is in charge. Also, I want to emphasize that the Grade Group has decided that no books are allowed in the hallways or stairwells, as leaders will be coming for inspections.”

Blah, blah, blah—Homeroom Teacher Liu talked for over ten minutes.

Besides cleaning and setting up the exam room, there were actually only two main points.

One was the issue of self-study during the exam; after all, we couldn’t actually have free time after the exams. We had to return to the classroom for self-study before and after the exams, and the morning and Evening Self-Study sessions would proceed as usual.

The other was the exam schedule: Grades 10 and 11 would have time off, the entire school’s teaching building would be used for the exams, all teachers would participate in proctoring, and it would be highly modeled after the College Entrance Exam.

After Homeroom Teacher Liu left, the class immediately became rowdy.

“College Entrance Exam standards? Doesn’t that mean we don’t have to attend classes for two days? Holy shit, this is awesome.”

“Wait, are you crazy?” Lin Dong looked at the guy with a look of disdain, as if looking at an idiot. “We lose half a day of our weekend break. What’s so awesome about that?!”

“Damn! You’re right! Are we still having Evening Self-Study?”

“Who knows? Old Liu, that riddle-maker, didn’t say! He left so fast, I didn’t get a chance to ask him at all.”

“Class Monitor! Class Monitor! Do we have to attend Evening Self-Study after the exams?”

Upon hearing this, Li Qingrong turned to look at the source of the voice.

“I think so. The other classes haven’t mentioned anything about having the time off either.”

As soon as she finished speaking, someone immediately contradicted her.

“According to College Entrance Exam standards, we definitely shouldn’t have to. I’m not coming. I’m going to the internet cafe as soon as the exams are over.” The person saying this was Luo Yong, the god of trash talk.

“red stone, if you dare skip class to go to the internet cafe, I’ll kneel and lick your feet,” Lin Dong laughed loudly. “Whoever doesn’t go has to call the other person ‘Daddy’ a hundred times. Dare to do it?”

After he said that, the class burst into laughter.

Luo Yong stared at Lin Dong, his face turning red as if he had been greatly insulted. He mumbled a few words but didn’t dare to answer loudly.

He thought to himself that if he weren’t lacking the confidence since he was renting a place off-campus, he would definitely dare to skip class!

After watching the commotion, Li Hua turned to ask Jiang Nian.

“Should we move our desks tonight?”

    “Sure,” Jiang Nian nodded.

Moving desks was a troublesome task, usually paired with taking out the trash.

It was impossible to count on Zeng You to contribute actively; he was busy returning to the dorm to read novels. As for Wu Jungu, Li Hua didn’t want to partner with him unless necessary.

It wasn’t exactly feeling guilty—well, okay, it was feeling guilty.

Li Hua felt that the atmosphere in the class had been a bit strange lately. To be precise, ever since Jiang Nian arrived, the atmosphere in Class Three had become this strange.

In the past, whenever he thought about that business with Wu Jungu’s ex-girlfriend, he would feel somewhat awkward.

Now, his sense of shame was becoming less and less… uh, basically non-existent. He even felt that he hadn’t done anything wrong, so why should he feel awkward? It should be the others who feel awkward!

There were some other things Li Hua didn’t dare to say out loud.

He was itching to try: if Yu Zhiyi appeared in front of him, he would converse with her naturally. There was no need to add drama to his own life and be awkward all by himself.

Just as someone once said, “So what? Who cares?”

Jiang Nian didn’t have as many teenage troubles as Li Hua; he was pondering where to put his books.

In the third year of high school, who didn’t have baskets and baskets of books? The classroom was almost too full to hold them. The Grade Group required all Class Three classrooms to be cleared of books, and they couldn’t be placed in the hallways either.

He didn’t know how many mothers the school leaders had on their family registration to be able to say such abstract things.

Some people in the class were already packing up their desks. Jiang Nian thought for a moment, then turned to Zhang Ningzhi and said:

“Pack up the books on your desk and in your drawer. I’ll help you move them later.”

Zhang Ningzhi’s eyes widened, and she was stunned for a moment.

“But… the Homeroom Teacher said we can’t move books before the second session of Evening Self-Study, and we aren’t allowed to put them on the stairs or in the stairwells.”

“Screw him, just move them. Putting them against the wall in the stairwell is convenient and won’t get in anyone’s way. Besides, if we don’t move them, others will.”

Jiang Nian knew what she was worried about—it was nothing more than being afraid of getting scolded if Homeroom Teacher Liu saw them later.

“We’ll get a few more people later. Once they’re moved, what can Old Liu say? Even if the school leaders come, it’s the same—are they going to make us take them home?”

Zhang Ningzhi wouldn’t dare to do this on her own; high school students were used to being controlled. Even when facing unreasonable regulations, they were basically obedient.

But fortunately, she had Jiang Nian, so she didn’t need to worry.

    “Okay.”

“OK.” Jiang Nian turned to go talk to Li Hua.

Then Li Hua patted Ma Guojun, and after some mumbling, Ma Guojun turned and convinced a few people in their group, while also calling over Yao Beibei from the neighboring group.

As soon as class ended, Jiang Nian and the others started moving their books.

In the hallway, besides the students leaving after class, there were also many people from other classes moving books, carrying them directly into the spacious stairwell.

Ma Guojun felt a bit relieved. “Damn, it’s a good thing we didn’t listen to Old Liu, otherwise all the spots would have been taken by people from other classes.”

“Yeah, there wasn’t much space to begin with.”

Li Hua was already on his third trip. He had originally planned to rest after helping Huang Fang, but he was forced to move books by Yao Beibei, and at the same time, he received a heavy ‘Good Guy Card.’

    Damn, it’s like red stone.

Ma Guojun put down his books and looked back at the hallway.

Jiang Nian had already finished moving Zhang Ningzhi’s books and was on his third trip. He was moving his books and some of Zhang Ningzhi’s useless books first, so there would be no need to fight for space in the evening.

    “What are you looking at?”

“Nothing, I’m just wondering why the Grade Group won’t let us put books in the hallway.” Big Fatty adjusted his glasses. “Is the hallway going to be used for a funeral?”

“Tsk, you have such a vicious tongue, baby.” Jiang Nian placed the books against the wall, straightened them up, and then stood up. “Maybe… they need to take pictures for promotional stuff or something.”

Lin Dong and Chen Yunyun’s group had also moved their books when Jiang Nian started. By now, they had finished and were discussing what to eat in the afternoon.

Influenced by Lin Dong and the others, a few more bold students in the class followed suit and moved their books.

    Regarding this, Yu Tongjie scoffed.

After school, he was still fighting hard at his seat. He felt disdain for Jiang Nian’s behavior of openly defying the Homeroom Teacher’s orders. What was the rush?

The Grade Group would naturally have arrangements; would they really leave students with nowhere to put their books?

    What a joke.

Furthermore, openly defying orders—didn’t that just make things difficult for the Class Monitor?

At her seat, Li Qingrong stared at the pile of books on her desk, wondering if she should move them out.

But if she did that, would it make things difficult for Cai Xiaoqing?

“Class Monitor, not going to eat?”

The classroom lights were on, and a shadow covered her desk. Li Qingrong looked up and met Jiang Nian’s smiling eyes, and she couldn’t help but look away silently.

    “Yeah, just thinking about something.”

    “Moving books?” Jiang Nian asked.

Upon hearing this, Li Qingrong looked up again, staring at him with a surprised expression, as if asking, ‘How did you know?’

    “Yeah.”

Jiang Nian suddenly felt that the Class Monitor was a bit slow; he had seen her staring at the books from afar for a long time, and then looked at the book basket. If she wasn’t worrying about moving books, was she perhaps lovesick?

“I’ll help you move them, while there’s still space over there.”

    “No—”

“Don’t mention it.” Jiang Nian picked up the book basket and left.

Li Qingrong had wanted to say she hadn’t decided yet, but her gaze was on his hands, and her attention was diverted by Jiang Nian’s hands. She hesitated for a few seconds, then looked up to find no one in front of her.

In a blink of an eye, Jiang Nian had already carried the books out.

Yu Tongjie, sitting in the last few rows, took it all in and couldn’t help but shake his head. He sneered to himself: Jiang Nian’s motives were too obvious; he was using the Class Monitor as a shield.

Just wait, when the Homeroom Teacher comes for Evening Self-Study and takes a look, there will be a good show to watch.

In the evening, approaching Evening Self-Study.

Zhang Ningzhi walked upstairs holding a bottle of Sprite. She had bought it for Jiang Nian to reward him for his hard work moving books; she usually saw him liking to drink this beverage whenever he had nothing to do.

Just as she reached the fourth floor, she saw Jiang Nian leaning against the hallway chatting with Chen Yunyun. The two were laughing and talking, which made Zhang Ningzhi’s cheeks puff up.

Although dissatisfied, she couldn’t do anything about Jiang Nian; after all, Jiang Nian had always been like this. Unhappy, she could only enter the classroom with a dissatisfied look on her face.

I’m not giving it to him!

Sneaky cat, I’d rather give it to a dog than to him!

“Wow? Sprite!” Li Hua looked pleasantly surprised. “Is this for me?”

“Mm-hmm, thank you, Group Leader, for helping Fangfang move books.” Zhang Ningzhi nodded, then remembered something and instructed, “This is a drink to thank you on behalf of Fangfang.”

    “So?” Li Hua was puzzled.

Zhang Ningzhi looked serious and stared at Li Hua.

“You can’t let Jiang Nian drink a single sip, otherwise Fangfang will be unhappy.”

Li Hua made an OK gesture and patted his chest.

“Don’t worry, if he even gets to taste a single drop of sweetness, I’m not human!”

Zhang Ningzhi was relieved and returned to her seat to start reviewing seriously.

    Outside the hallway.

“Of course I’m not human, I’m a male god.” Li Hua unscrewed the Sprite and took a few sips without touching the bottle to his mouth. “Refreshing, iced national cellar liquor! Here, here, here.”

“Holy shit, you’re quite shameless, too.” Jiang Nian tilted his head back and finished a third of the bottle without touching his lips to it, then passed it to Ma Guojun. “Here, here, here.”

“Damn, good stuff! Where’d you get it?” Ma Guojun took the bottle and drank a few sips.

Sprite was just so-so if you bought it yourself, but if you were in school fighting over it with friends, it was like national cellar liquor; missing a single drop would make you regret it for several periods.

“Zhang Ningzhi gave it to me, probably for Jiang Nian.” Li Hua turned to look at Jiang Nian. “Did you make her mad? How did this water end up in my hands?”

“How would I know? Maybe it was when I took apart her two pens to make a slingshot last time.” Jiang Nian didn’t pay much attention; it would be abnormal if his desk-mate wasn’t angry with him.

The third year of high school is too boring; I can’t survive without being a jerk.

“Or maybe it was when I caught a bee that flew into the class and kept it in a mineral water bottle, which scared her for two periods.” Jiang Nian pondered, counting on his fingers.

“Hmm, anything further back than that, I can’t remember.”

Li Hua and Ma Guojun looked at each other, silent for a long time.

“To be honest, you’re a bit of a bastard.”

“Yeah, you really have no limits.”

During evening reading, Old Liu indeed came to the class to patrol.

Finally, he stood on the podium and coughed.

“I’m taking up ten minutes of your time. I came in a bit of a rush this afternoon. Some students mentioned they didn’t understand, and many details weren’t made clear.”

“Regarding this exam, I will add a few more points.”

Old Liu spoke methodically; this time he used electronic pauses, so it seemed he really wasn’t in a hurry. He listed several points, none of which mentioned moving books.

Finally, someone in the class couldn’t help but ask.

“Teacher, we can’t put books in the hallway, so where should we put them?”

“There hasn’t been a notice yet. Did anyone in our class move their books this afternoon?” Old Liu’s gaze swept over the class, and several people immediately lowered their heads with guilt.

Upon hearing this, Yu Tongjie immediately perked up; it was finally happening.

He had been waiting for the Homeroom Teacher to discover that Jiang Nian and the others had moved their books privately and fly into a rage. It would be best if he ordered them to move the books back; thinking about this, he was already starting to feel good.

Other Homeroom Teachers might not be so ruthless, but Yu Tongjie thought his own Homeroom Teacher was such a bootlicker for the leaders’ requirements that he would definitely execute it strictly.

“Teacher, I moved mine.” Jiang Nian raised his hand.

Old Liu frowned and said displeasedly.

“Didn’t I tell you to wait for the notice?”

“Teacher, I moved mine too; the notice was too hard to wait for.” Li Hua raised his hand. “If we didn’t move them this afternoon, all the space would be taken by later. We can’t put them in the office, can we?”

“Yeah, yeah, Teacher, the class next door already moved theirs.” Ma Guojun raised his hand and complained.

Lin Dong also stood up. “Teacher, Class One said they could put them in the stairwell.”

At her seat, Zhang Ningzhi’s heart suddenly tightened; she wanted to raise her hand, but Jiang Nian patted it down.

“Well…” Old Liu hesitated for a moment. “That’s fine too. I see the stairwell is quite spacious; it should be okay to put books there. Everyone can just put them there.”

Upon hearing this, the class was in an uproar, and everyone was stunned.

    Wait, dude, you…

    Are you a fucking idiot!

Yu Tongjie was stunned by Old Liu and couldn’t speak; the old guy’s words were like farts.

During the afternoon study session, who was it that said we couldn’t move books and couldn’t put them in the stairwell?

How, after just over two hours, did it change to being allowed to put them in the stairwell?

“I want to emphasize this: no books in the hallway!” Old Liu tapped the table on the podium to stop the commotion in the classroom, gave a few more instructions, and then left.

Zhang Ningzhi breathed a sigh of relief; due to excessive nervousness, she was dazed for a while.

After regaining her senses, she glanced at Jiang Nian, who was reviewing his test papers on her left.

Although he was a bit of a… sneaky cat, she was still glad he was there. Thinking about the afternoon’s events, she decided to bring a drink to compensate Jiang Nian tomorrow.

Lin Dong’s group—after he sat down, he smiled.

“I told you, Old Liu is completely unreliable. It’s a good thing we followed and moved the books out; after the first session of Evening Self-Study, a bunch of people will definitely be fighting for space.”

Chen Yunyun gently patted her chest, also feeling exceptionally relieved.

“Yeah, it’s a good thing we followed Jiang Nian and moved them.”

Wang Yuhe looked down at her arms and thought to herself, she should be able to carry the book basket for twenty meters.

Sun Zhicheng heard Chen Yunyun mention Jiang Nian, and his expression turned unpleasant.

But as soon as he thought about the fact that he was the one who helped Chen Yunyun move the book basket, he couldn’t help but smile again.
