Chapter Index

    Lunch break was approaching.

Chen Yunyun and Wang Yuhe hurried over from the dorm, their freshly washed, semi-damp hair loosely draped behind their heads.

They entered the classroom with their heads down to grab their homework, then stood directly outside to bask in the sun.

Jiang Nian was originally at his seat doing homework when his phone in his pocket vibrated gently. He looked down and saw that Chen Yunyun had sent him a message.

    “Coming out to sunbathe? (Confused)”

He thought for a moment, then replied:

    “Okay.”

The two girls weren’t sunbathing in the hallway outside the classroom; instead, they took their books to the rooftop of the adjacent administration building.

Under the clear winter sky, the sun made people feel a little dizzy.

The clear blue sky, on the contrary, resembled a giant mirror, inverted over the small county town of Zhennan.

Wang Yuhe stood at the edge of the rooftop, gazing into the distance, her long hair dancing in the wind. After a while, she ran back with a stomping sound.

“Hey, what do you guys think it’s like outside?”

The damp parts of her hair had soaked a spot on the round collar of her shirt. The fabric clung tightly to her skin, then detached the moment she bent over.

A white, smooth vertical line flashed past Jiang Nian’s eyes.

    Hmm?

He immediately stood up and took two steps towards the rooftop edge, covering up his momentary embarrassment.

“Let me see, isn’t it just mountains?”

Wang Yuhe looked back at him, feeling puzzled.

    “And beyond the mountains?”

“It’s a road, probably the national highway to the city,” Chen Yunyun said. “When we visited relatives for New Year’s, my dad drove on it once.”

“Envious, I don’t have relatives in the city,” Wang Yuhe pouted, then looked up and asked, “What about Jiang Nian, have you been?”

Jiang Nian scratched his face, “I think so, my uncle and them are in the city, but my parents go for New Year’s, I don’t.”

“Ha, they just don’t like me.”

“Why?” Wang Yuhe asked, looking confused.

“Nothing, just some old, trivial stuff,” Jiang Nian changed the subject. “This month, I’ll get my driver’s license.”

“When I’m on holiday, I’ll find a car and take you guys for a drive over there, then you’ll know.”

“Really?” Wang Yuhe immediately jumped up.

“You’re getting your driver’s license so fast?” Chen Yunyun was slightly surprised, instinctively thinking Jiang Nian had taken leave today to practice driving.

“Not fast, it’ll probably take almost a month and a half for the whole process,” Jiang Nian explained. “If you want to talk about fast, it used to be faster.”

    “A month?” Chen Yunyun asked.

“You could buy it in three days.”

    Chen Yunyun: “…”

Hearing this, Chen Yunyun realized he was a new driver. She began to worry about his safety on the road,

    and couldn’t help but ask.

“Going on the road right after getting your license? Isn’t that dangerous?”

Jiang Nian thought for a moment, then nodded.

“You’re right, then I’ll wait two years before touching a car.”

“That’s even more dangerous!” Chen Yunyun’s face flushed, and she bit her lower lip. “Then when you go, call me.”

“Us!” Wang Yuhe bounced forward, adding.

The conversation circled back and forth, from safety to safety again. But it shifted from concern to worrying about Jiang Nian getting into a car accident alone.

Young people are just like that, timid as mice yet bold as brass.

“Don’t worry, it’s not like filming a Guo Xiaosi movie,” Jiang Nian reassured them. “I wouldn’t take you guys if I wasn’t confident.”

“On my first day of driving lessons, I practiced all the subjects. I drive more steadily than my instructor; he even has to offer me a cigarette when he sees me.”

The two girls were amused by him, giggling incessantly.

The three of them stayed on the rooftop for over half an hour, almost entirely chatting and sunbathing, without touching any of the homework they brought.

    After lunch break.

Jiang Nian woke up from his desk, and his eyes met Zhang Ningzhi’s flawless profile, which he found himself staring at intently.

He was a bit dazed from just waking up.

He wondered what it would feel like to kiss her.

Suddenly, Ningzhi turned and glanced at him. As if by some telepathic connection, she suddenly started to get angry.

    No, is this mind-reading?

“You said you’d be back for P.E. class at noon, but where were you?” Zhang Ningzhi accused. “You lied again!”

Oh, so it was about that.

“I actually wanted to come back, but…” He unhurriedly took a sip of water. “This doesn’t really count as lying.”

“At most, it’s standing someone up; your choice of words is clearly inappropriate.”

Zhang Ningzhi, corrected, blushed and simply resorted to being unreasonable.

    “It is, it is!”

“If you say it is, then it is,” Jiang Nian spread his hands, a classic scumbag line. “If you insist on thinking that way, then I have no…”

    Bang!

Someone’s arm was heavily struck, immediately retiring it on the spot, and his privilege to drink beverages was temporarily frozen by the rich loli.

Jiang Nian was not flustered at all; if she wouldn’t let him drink his beverage,

    then he would drink hers.

Ningzhi is the softest; he’d find an opportunity to wear her down. Forget about getting beverage privileges, all privileges would be unfrozen.

The language of a steel wool scrubber is forbearance and wealth.

Isn’t that begging on one’s knees? Begging requires kneeling; standing, one wouldn’t get food. One can’t have both.

Then can one eat while standing?

    Yes, one can.

Zhang Ningzhi and Yao Beibei went to the restroom hand-in-hand, leaving Jiang Nian, the only male, alone at his seat, so he started to get restless again.

He turned to look at the class monitor; she was reading a book.

Li Qingrong couldn’t quite bear it, so she looked up.

    “Hmm?”

“Nothing, just seeing what you’re doing,” Jiang Nian reached out and flipped through the book in her hand. “When did you buy this magazine?”

“At noon,” Li Qingrong hesitated for a moment, then handed it to him. “Do you want to read it?”

“Wait until you’re done, I’m not in a hurry,” Jiang Nian didn’t refuse; reading the same book would lead to more conversation topics.

The class monitor was already a person of few words; if he waited for her to find topics, they wouldn’t chat more than a few times a year.

Hearing this, Li Qingrong took the book back.

Because Zeng You and Wu Jungu entered through the front door, and as soon as they reached their seats, they turned to look at Jiang Nian, laughed for a bit, then said,

    “You’re finished.”

Damn, are you trying to trick me?

Jiang Nian smiled faintly, “How am I finished?”

“The P.E. teacher called your name at noon, but you weren’t there,” Zeng You chuckled. “I swear, if I’m lying, my mom will die.”

Hearing this, Jiang Nian’s smile instantly vanished, no longer chuckling.

    “What did he say?”

Zeng You took a sip of water, “He said you keep taking leave during his classes, and next time he catches you, he’ll make you run three thousand meters.”

“It’s true,” Wu Jungu also turned around, smiling. “He said unless you play soccer and join the class’s soccer team.”

Hearing this, Jiang Nian couldn’t help but wonder.

“There are so many people in the class, why isn’t anyone joining?”

Zeng You pulled out his phone, stating matter-of-factly,

    “We are scholars.”

Jiang Nian pondered for a while, then realized what was going on.

    “This is conscription.”

As class approached, Yao Beibei returned with Zhang Ningzhi. She glanced at Jiang Nian, a sly smile appearing on her face.

    “You’re finished.”

“Get lost,” Jiang Nian thought, ‘I’ll give you another whack.’

“Tch,” Yao Beibei knew immediately that someone else had stolen her thunder. “Why are you talking so fiercely, are you sick?”

After Zhang Ningzhi sat down, she whispered,

“During P.E. class, Beibei suggested you join the soccer team.”

    “Her?” Jiang Nian was stunned.

“Yes, Beibei said you won the three-thousand-meter championship, so why not get you to play soccer?” Zhang Ningzhi said, “Then the teacher agreed.”

“Oh… then I blamed her wrongly, but since she’s already killed, let’s just bury her,” Jiang Nian hesitated for a moment, then said this.

He looked up and met Zhang Ningzhi’s displeased gaze, immediately feeling guilty.

“Alright, alright, I’ll apologize to her after class, okay?” Jiang Nian slid to his knees. “I’m actually a good kid.”

    Not a rotten cabbage.

But he said this in his heart.

    Class started.

The first class on Wednesday afternoon was Chinese, which was the homeroom teacher’s class.

Old Liu, that guy, has been slacking off more and more in class recently. Classic three minutes late for class, one minute for maintaining discipline.

Three minutes telling a joke, six or seven minutes talking about something.

The Great Master’s move directly cut off one-third of the class. The remaining twenty minutes were spent lecturing, and ten minutes bragging.

    OK, class dismissed.

Yet, this routine was quite popular in Class Three.

The students’ source of internal school news entirely depended on Old Liu’s three-minute jokes and six or seven minutes of talking about things.

After getting used to it, it was like watching a weekly stand-up comedy; it felt off if there was less of it.

“Cough cough!!” Old Liu, stepping in three minutes late, entered carrying a thermos. “Ah, quiet down, class is starting.”

“Every time I come in, the classroom is always a mess. And some people are… like this, from now on, let’s set a new rule.”

After straightening out discipline, Old Liu began his classic joke collection again.

He told a story about the academic affairs office catching young couples, which made the whole class laugh, and only then did he bring up the serious matters of the class.

“There are two rather important things this week: one is the inter-class soccer match required by the school, and the other is the New Year’s Day party at the end of the month.”

“Things have priorities; the New Year’s Day party only needs to be announced. We’ll discuss the details next week.”

“The soccer match will be held in the middle of the month, on the 8th. Time is quite tight, and the event might last about a week.”

As his voice fell, the class instantly erupted.

“Teacher, going on the field so quickly, aren’t you giving us a chance to practice?”

“Yeah, how are we supposed to play against other classes?”

“Damn it, isn’t that next week? I thought it would start around the twentieth, and I was planning to practice some skills!”

Just four days of preparation time instantly put the boys in the class on edge.

If it weren’t for Xi Bao leaking the details the day before yesterday, there would have been no chance to practice at all, meaning they would go straight into the class match without any practice.

Wouldn’t they just get repeatedly thrashed by those classes that know how to play?

    Below, public opinion was boiling.

Old Liu was also quite helpless; he coughed to interrupt the discussion.

“This is also a temporary arrangement by the school. There are many activities this month, and we need to make time and space for the New Year’s Day party.”

“Now, let’s confirm the participants first. Liu Yang will be responsible for leading the team.”

Liu Yang immediately raised his hand and said, “Teacher, I’m not good at playing.”

“Even if you’re not good, you’re in. Let’s just put together a soccer team first,” Old Liu was decisive, and quickly named a few more people.

“Li Hua, Jiang Nian… Okay, add Ma Guojun.”

After naming them, he realized there wasn’t even anyone to warm the bench, so he immediately named a few more people.

He then said, “Let’s choose a captain.”

    Suddenly, Yao Beibei said,

“Teacher, Jiang Nian played in a soccer match in his first year of high school.”

Hearing this, the eyes of the entire class rushed towards a certain person.
