Chapter Index

With a click, the window closed, and Jiang Nian continued to work on practice problems.

His phone on the desk buzzed. He walked over and saw it was a picture of a problem-solving approach sent by Chen Yunyun, which he had asked her to write half an hour ago.

“It might not be correct, but take a look first.”

He replied instantly with “Okay,” and saved the picture.

He had been chatting with Chen Yunyun a lot recently, perhaps because their seats were far apart, or maybe because he was busy studying during the day, so their conversations became sporadic online.

It was a bit like having a regular chat partner, with seven or eight messages a day.

Jiang Nian could keep up with the replies because not many people usually messaged him. Le Zhi would occasionally ask about study methods, but otherwise, he was quite free.

Xu Qianqian and Jiang Nian went home together every day, so there was no need for online communication. Zhang Ningzhi was constantly annoyed by him, so she had even less desire to chat online.

After all, online, the most she could do was send a few protest emojis. But offline, when he spoke nonsense, she could just punch him.

Huh? Why isn’t Jiang Nian breathing when he sleeps?

Upon checking, the inferior man is dead.

It seems, isn’t this a reason to open champagne again?

In comparison, Chen Yunyun was much softer. Jiang Nian would annoy her in every possible way. Even when she was angry, she would just ignore him, being incredibly soft.

The road is too smooth, there are no pebbles.

He continued to work through the problem bank until four in the morning, used one fatigue exemption, and then continued until dawn, also doing several rounds of simulated exams.

He didn’t sleep all night, but he was incredibly energetic.

This was thanks to his persistent daily exercise and diligent, regular routine, and actually had little to do with the System.

In short, it was incredibly refreshing.

What’s the difference between this and having thirty-six hours in a day?

When Jiang Nian thought about joining a major internet company in the future, outcompeting colleagues and outlasting leaders, earning a few more’sisters-in-law’ for his boss, his face immediately filled with pride.

He sent several screenshots of perfect scores to Old Tian at the driving school, who immediately replied with a voice message.

    “Boss Jiang is so impressive?”

That’s why people say he can run a driving school well; he replies to Boss Jiang at six in the morning. He calls him “Boss Jiang” repeatedly, never mentioning anything about being a student.

Forget students; as long as the person is over eighteen and a VIP client, even if it were a dog, he’d call it “Boss.”

Jiang Nian was even more surprised and replied with a question mark.

“Coach Tian is up so early?”

With a whoosh, Tian Yongsheng immediately replied with another voice message.

“I’m coaching a VIP client; it’s good for practice in the morning. The client is highly motivated and it doesn’t delay their work.”

In his room, Jiang Nian listened, dumbfounded.

Old Tian’s words were so sweet, did the client have a knife to his throat?

And “highly motivated,” what nonsense. It’s a small county town, Zhennan, a place the size of a palm. How far can one’s ambition take them? Could it be some overachieving dog from out of town?

    That would truly be terrifying.

He sent a message to Tian Yongsheng, asking Old Tian to help arrange the appointment for his Subject One driving test.

The other party readily agreed and asked when he would be free to practice driving.

Jiang Nian thought for a moment and replied, “Acquired noon.”

Acquired noon he had physical education, so he could just request leave starting from the morning run. Although he couldn’t clock in without finishing Subject One, no one really cared.

Old Tian had practically hinted that he could handle the clock-in.

Rules are dead, people are alive. The other party clearly had wide connections in Zhennan. The most important thing was the driving practice itself; he didn’t need to worry about anything else.

    Tian Yongsheng replied, “Okay, Boss.”

Jiang Nian wasn’t a boss; he was just an ordinary high school boy, but he was almost flattered to the heavens by being called “Boss” repeatedly.

Damn it, forbid driving school bosses from reading CEO romance novels.

After doing everything, Jiang Nian pulled open the curtains.

Looking at the faint light, he couldn’t help but let out a long breath. He thought to himself that the damn System, apart from giving money, only had two useful small skills.

Since he wasn’t sleepy at all, he might as well go wash up.

North District, the internal road connecting the dormitory area to the teaching building.

Zhou Haifei walked with her head down, holding a brown sugar bun. She got up early and was usually among the first customers at the cafeteria’s bun stall.

She didn’t have much cash, but she had money on her meal card.

Zhennan was never stingy with poor students who excelled in exams, providing varying amounts of meal subsidies each month, deposited into their meal cards on time.

Even extremely poor students with no money on them would not go hungry as long as they were still in high school.

She was grateful for this and studied even harder to maintain her academic ranking, using her efforts to legitimately earn meal card credit.

Zhou Haifei had just gone upstairs when she suddenly heard footsteps around the corner.

She instinctively looked back and saw a tall, slender figure turn the corner. The person walked with his back very straight, almost a perfect line.

His jawline was distinct, his black hair soft, and the vibrant Life Qi of youth made her heart flutter.

How did he get here so early?

The other person clearly noticed Zhou Haifei too and looked up to greet her directly.

    “So early?”

Zhou Haifei instinctively averted her gaze, her expression somewhat flustered.

    “Ah, yes.”

She was naturally grateful for Jiang Nian’s kindness last time, but more than that, she still felt an inexpressible “inferiority” in front of a lucky person.

This inferiority came not only from material aspects but also from the spiritual.

A boy from a wealthy family once pursued her. His intention was to please her, so he sincerely complimented her on how hard she studied.

If it had ended there, it would have been an ordinary compliment.

But the boy habitually added, “Unlike XXX in our class. His family isn’t well-off, so why doesn’t he study hard?”

She thought at the time, if a family is extremely poor, and everyone is a burden, going out to work early might be the only way to survive, or even live a life of basic sustenance.

Studying is beneficial for life planning, but some people simply have no life.

Zhou Haifei also knew that the boy pursuing her might have just thought she would be easier to approach than other girls, so she slowly distanced herself from him.

Closing off one’s heart is sometimes just a form of self-preservation.

She couldn’t tell if the other person’s kindness was mixed with other things.

    Thump-thump-thump.

On the stairs, Jiang Nian quickened his steps and walked in front of Zhou Haifei.

“You’re eating brown sugar buns for breakfast?”

Hearing this, she suddenly snapped back to reality. Accustomed to looking down, she had zoned out and quickly hid the half-eaten brown sugar bun behind her back.

    “Mhm, mhm.”

Zhou Haifei was a little embarrassed; the cafeteria’s brown sugar buns didn’t look very appetizing.

The boarding students in her class didn’t eat them; they usually went to another cafeteria to buy three-yuan mixed noodles. She bought the buns to save money and effort.

Jiang Nian glanced at her, looking puzzled.

    “Damn, are you hoarding food?”

“No,” Zhou Haifei felt this person’s thought process was a bit strange.

“I’m a student, let me try some.” Jiang Nian had already extended a hand.

“Huh?” Zhou Haifei was bewildered, looking up at him.

Seeing that he didn’t seem to be joking, she was both shocked and speechless. She had never heard such a strange request; wasn’t it just a mediocre bun?

The atmosphere froze there, for about three seconds.

Zhou Haifei didn’t know what she was thinking, perhaps afraid someone would come and witness this scene. So, with the thought of just getting it over with, she broke off a small piece for him.

The moment she broke the bun, her face turned crimson.

She thought to herself that she was truly crazy, and the other person’s mental state was also questionable. Even though the part of the bun she broke off was untouched, just a small corner.

But… she still felt ashamed, reminding her of the worn-out schoolbag, too-short pants, soy sauce mixed with rice, and cold, hard nutritional lunches from her memories.

These images flashed through her mind, and finally, with a pounding heart, she handed it over.

Jiang Nian didn’t hesitate and gulped it down in one bite.

“Damn it, where did you buy this brown sugar bun? These dog merchants are truly despicable.”

Zhou Haifei originally didn’t intend to laugh, but upon hearing Jiang Nian’s evaluation, she burst out laughing, unable to help but whisper,

“You have to eat it with water.”

“Clearly, their skill is lacking. This damn school cafeteria truly has a black heart!” Jiang Nian thumped his chest twice, making a drumming sound.

“Ugh, I’m fed up. Where did you buy it?”

Zhou Haifei was a little embarrassed, “Dorm cafeteria, second floor.”

“Okay, next time I’ll buy it for my deskmate.” Jiang Nian unzipped his backpack and shoved a small bag of bread into her hand, “Here, don’t say I stole your breakfast.”

Zhou Haifei was a little flustered. When she looked up, the other person had already gone upstairs.

She wanted to say something, but ultimately couldn’t open her mouth.

She shook her head, suddenly feeling a little guilty, and still went upstairs. Back at her seat, she didn’t dare to wander around, hiding the bread deep in her drawer.

She just had a feeling… that person was hard to describe. Weren’t he and Xu Qianqian a couple?

Six thirty-five, North District boys’ dormitory.

A piercing whistle echoed from downstairs, its sound penetrating all the way to the sixth floor.

Huang Cailang’s eyes snapped open, staring at the wooden bed board above him. His head instantly filled with blood, and with a jolt, he sat up from the bed.

    “Holy crap!! I overslept!”

He yelled, but a groan came from the bunk diagonally opposite him.

    “What’s going on?”

Huang Cailang was stunned. When he realized Yang Qiming was still in bed, his previously panicked expression immediately calmed down.

He rolled out of bed, not bothering to get dressed, and walked to Yang Qiming’s bed.

“Brother Yang, wake up, the grade group is here to check on late sleepers!”

Yang Qiming was half-asleep and didn’t hear very clearly.

“I’ll pee later, let me sleep a bit more.”

“No, Brother Yang, get up quickly!” Huang Cailang became anxious.

Yang Qiming finally woke up. By the time he realized something was wrong, the grade group teachers were already on the fourth floor, checking rooms one by one.

He heard a deep voice echo in the fourth-floor corridor.

“You guys guard the stairs; I’ll go up to the fifth floor and check.”

At this moment, Yang Qiming and Huang Cailang, wearing only their underwear, exchanged glances. Everyone else in the dorm had left, leaving just the two of them.

Hiding in the dorm and locking the door was clearly not an option. Those teachers would keep knocking or call the homeroom teacher of the corresponding class.

Only dorms locked from the outside could escape inspection.

Several teachers walked up the stairs to the fifth floor, basically blocking both sides, left and right. They intended a thorough search, not letting any student escape.

The rooftop in the early morning.

Two boys, wearing only their underwear, shivered in the cold wind, holding a silver key.

Looking at the hazy red sun at the end of the rooftop, they wanted to cry but had no tears.
