Chapter 9 Diagnostic Test
by SunflowerJiang Nian’s head was buzzing the entire morning.
What’s going on?
A girl?
Xu Qianqian’s words from the morning still echoed in his ears, “My ID card name is Zhou Haifei. Because the college entrance exam is approaching, I haven’t changed the name yet; usually, I’m called Haifei.”
Holy crap, Zhou Haifei is a girl?
No wonder she never expressed her feelings from high school to university; Jiang Nian thought, what else could he say?
Should he say my chemistry is very good, this is aluminum copper!
However, upon closer thought, it was reasonable.
Jiang Nian understood Xu Qianqian; her orientation was definitely not an issue. Let alone a successful career, even a CEO wouldn’t stand a chance; that was a fact.
This System was benchmarked against his future self from another timeline, a thirty-eight-year-old loser who had just started after a complete failure, competing with a successful person.
Moreover, the reward for this mission was so low, only five thousand yuan.
After the second period’s long break.
Jiang Nian lingered around Xu Qianqian’s classroom for a bit, and seeing no teacher, he directly walked in. Generally, class-hopping was not allowed, but thick-skinned people were an exception.
After all, Xu Qianqian’s grades in the Olympiad class were also among the top, and she was a beautiful girl. No class cadre would suddenly lose their mind and jump out, shouting, “No unauthorized personnel allowed.”
“Hey, Qianqian, your little childhood friend is here.”
“Get lost!”
Xu Qianqian’s close female classmates joked, and a burst of playful laughter erupted. This was common interaction among high school girls, pointing at a boy, “Your husband, your husband.”
However, this was not a youth idol drama; no one would utter idiotic phrases like “X School Heartthrob.” Being pointed at as “husband” was often not a glorious title.
Xu Qianqian blushed and nudged her female deskmate.
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
Jiang Nian, however, looked indifferent. He directly stood in the aisle. He first started chatting with Xu Qianqian’s deskmate, and a few sentences made the girl beam with joy.
One of the benefits of being popular: good at socializing.
But it was useless; besides Xu Qianqian’s deskmate, no one cared about this boy from a parallel class.
It wasn’t discrimination; reality was that schools spoke with grades, or looked at family background. If one of the two was good enough, one could be very popular.
“Why are you here?”
“Oh, oh, to ask a math question, this one.” Jiang Nian wrote the problem on her scratch paper. He genuinely didn’t know math, so he could only ask more questions.
Xu Qianqian tucked her hair behind her ear and leaned over to take a look.
“Oh, this one uses…”
Her deskmate, Song Xiyun, with sparkling eyes, watched the clean-cut and handsome Jiang Nian and Xu Qianqian, her lips unconsciously curving into a smile.
Finally, Jiang Nian asked another question.
“Which one is Zhou Haifei?”
Xu Qianqian’s brow furrowed imperceptibly, but she still quietly told him.
“The one in the third group, fifth row, by the wall, wearing glasses. Don’t stare directly at other girls, Jiang Nian, are you a pig?”
Jiang Nian only glanced over. A bespectacled girl on the classroom’s inner side, looking slender. She was writing her homework with her head down, her hair covering half her face, making it hard to see clearly.
As if divinely inspired, the bespectacled girl also looked up this way. Her gaze met Jiang Nian’s for a moment, revealing an ordinary face, and then she nonchalantly lowered her head again.
After Jiang Nian left.
Song Xiyun poked her deskmate’s waist, “Hey, Qianqian, you two really grew up together since childhood?”
“I guess so.”
“I heard that when Li Bai married his childhood sweetheart, he didn’t even look back when entering the bridal chamber; he was probably too embarrassed.” Song Xiyun chattered, making Xu Qianqian blush.
“What are you saying!”
“Li Bai.” Song Xiyun looked innocent, a smile in her eyes, “What’s wrong? Who did you think I was talking about? Could it be you…”
“You’re going to die, Song Xiyun!”
Jiang Nian returned to his classroom. For the System’s mission, he temporarily had no good solution. The person hadn’t even spoken to Xu Qianqian, so what could he do?
The most direct method would be to make Xu Qianqian taken, visible only to one person (Zhou Haifei).
But such things could only be imagined, commonly known as wishful thinking.
He would wait and see for now.
For three consecutive days, Jiang Nian was busy catching up on math.
The first monthly exam for the third year of high school, commonly known as the diagnostic exam, was tomorrow. Compared to the System’s five thousand yuan, this was clearly more important.
He didn’t want to stay in this class anymore; the first diagnostic exam offered a chance to switch classes. The top and bottom tiers of students would swap, which was an unwritten rule.
As for why he wasn’t studying physics, let’s just say that if the physics examiner was a bit more mischievous, the class could produce a bunch of ‘talents’ who scored single digits.
His physics score wasn’t bad, around sixty points, so there was no need to waste time.
“Jiang Nian, why are you starting to study?” Le Zhi swaggered over, sitting in front of him with a smile that all boys understood, “What stimulated you?”
Jiang Nian looked up, pondering how to respond. He couldn’t exactly say, “I want to get away from you guys.”
“Oh, nothing, just studying for fun.”
“Stubborn, this is a typical symptom of heartbreak.” Le Zhi was as thin as a bamboo pole, and his croaky voice sounded like the ‘No Thief Under Heaven’ from ‘Fruit Robo,’ “Still thinking about that thing?”
Jiang Nian smiled, saying “What thing?” while thinking, “Screw all of your mothers.”
“Everyone was just joking; find an opportunity to clear things up.” Le Zhi crossed his legs, smiling, “It’s strange not having one person around.”
“How about this, after the Acquired exam, Zhou Yuting said we’re going for barbecue in the evening. Are you coming?”
Jiang Nian didn’t even look up, “No.”
Le Zhi got the cold shoulder and left directly.
Jiang Nian sat at his desk, clenching and unclenching the pen in his hand. He suddenly remembered past events and felt like he was such an idiot for ever hanging out with this group of people.
Ultimately, these people gathered together just to show off, evaluating others one moment.
If they were in a bad mood, the next moment, if someone kindly asked them, they would immediately turn cold-faced like idiots.
These people even highly praised this kind of sudden cold-faced personality, feeling cool when flattered. They carried a sense of superiority, purely looking down on others.
Ultimately, they were idiots, and hanging out with such people would only make him an idiot too.
Taking a deep breath, Jiang Nian continued to review.
The next day, the diagnostic exam arrived.
First-year high school students had the weekend off, and their teaching building was used as the examination hall for third-year students. Due to its importance in class rearrangement, the school attached great importance to it, and the invigilation was unprecedentedly strict.
Jiang Nian held his stationery bag and found his examination room in advance.
The exam arrangements completely followed the college entrance examination. The first subject was Chinese language, and the desks in the examination room were widely spaced. The person in front was a quiet girl wearing a summer school uniform, with fair arms.
When passing the test papers, the girl turned around. Her face was beautiful, her brows gentle, and she wore jeans with a white summer school uniform, making her skin appear very fair.
When handing over the answer sheet, the brush-tip-like bangs on both sides of her cheeks fell, as if to cut a cool and serene style out of the muggy summer.
