Chapter Index

Outside the third-year high school building.

The rain had stopped before school ended at noon, so there was no need for umbrellas.

The sports field was covered in puddles of all sizes, and the coin-sized holes in the flagstone path were filled with water.

A cold wind blew, creating tiny ripples.

Wang Yuhe walked on the right, carefully stepping on the edge of each puddle.

Jiang Nian walked in the middle, side-by-side with Chen Yunyun on his left. The clouds had cleared and the rain stopped; they chatted as they walked towards the cafeteria.

The convenience store was located just outside the cafeteria, right next to the west gate.

“Aren’t we going out to eat?” Chen Yunyun asked.

“It’s almost closing time, I’m too lazy to go out.” Jiang Nian glanced at her, “If you two haven’t eaten either, then let’s go out together.”

Chen Yunyun was extremely pleased by this remark, her eyes curving into happy slits.

    “Really or fake?”

“Fake. I don’t care if Wang Yuhe has eaten or not.”

Hearing this, Chen Yunyun couldn’t help but burst out laughing, chiding him.

“Don’t say that.” The cafeteria at noon wouldn’t actually close, but they would clear away the dishes from the serving windows, close the windows, and turn off the lights.

    In the dim cafeteria.

Zhang Xiaofan had packed a bunch of food, all dumped on a window-side table in the cafeteria, and was feasting with his two lackeys.

Several cans of beer and drinks, all costing more than three yuan, stood on the table.

Next to Zhang Xiaofan were two bottles of RIO. He showed little interest in the large bowls of crayfish and stewed meat on the table, only drinking some chicken soup.

The strategist, Zeng Yunde, ate the stewed meat with large bites, and the big guy, Cao Yang, continuously slurped crayfish, their taste buds greatly satisfied.

“Brother Xiaofan, why aren’t you eating?”

“You guys eat, I’m not in the mood.” Zhang Xiaofan tossed his chopsticks, “Twice now, my bike has been damaged again.”

“Last time it was the keyhole, this time the front and back tires were punctured.”

Hearing this, Cao Yang clenched his fists and said indignantly, “I don’t know which bastard did it. If I find out, I’ll beat him severely, smash his balls.”

His zealousness earned Zhang Xiaofan’s approval.

    “Good!”

The strategist, Zeng Yunde, spoke up at this moment, “We don’t know who did it, and the vendor isn’t cooperating with checking the surveillance footage.”

“Brother Xiaofan, have you thought about who you might have offended recently?”

Zhang Xiaofan thought for a moment, “There are many.”

    Zeng Yunde:…

Even so, the strategist, Zeng Yunde, didn’t try to dissuade him. After all, the more enemies Zhang Xiaofan had, the more he would need his followers.

    The more chaotic, the better.

    Just then.

A person entered through the side door of the cafeteria, holding instant noodles. A girl followed him, looking around for a table to sit at.

Soon after, another girl walked in.

“Yunyun, look, I bought a bag of oranges before they closed! Pretty good, right?”

Jiang Nian was waiting for the hot water to soften his noodles and couldn’t resist retorting.

“How come the security guard didn’t shut you out?”

Wang Yuhe, quite pleased, hummed, “Because I was incredibly clever; I showed the security uncle a deliberately slowed-down clock. When it comes to smarts, I’m much better than you!”

    Jiang Nian: “???”

He thought the security guard probably saw that this girl was a bit simple-minded and, to avoid trouble, let her in.

But it didn’t matter, at least there were oranges to eat.

    So satisfying.

Zhang Xiaofan’s table fell silent. They all turned their heads to stare at Jiang Nian and the two girls at the next table, their eyes almost popping out.

Chen Yunyun had a gentle appearance, a typical Southern girl. Her figure was slender, with a clean, lively, and transparent quality.

Wang Yuhe was similar, with a baby face that made her look youthful. Her long legs were encased in jeans, and her long hair was tied in a ponytail.

The two of them together were 100% eye-catching.

And Jiang Nian, sitting in the middle, held a bucket of instant noodles. A bottle of Sprite sat on the table, and he looked rather uninterested.

Zhang Xiaofan looked at the crayfish and stewed meat on his own table, then at the bucket of instant noodles on Jiang Nian’s side, and completely erupted in anger!

“No, why does he get that!”

“Brother, calm down, calm down.” Cao Yang was frightened and quickly pulled Zhang Xiaofan back, “Can’t beat him, brother, don’t be impulsive.”

He clearly remembered that day at the late-night snack stall.

Jiang Nian was also sitting with two girls, and then he turned around and dragged him and Zhang Xiaofan away by their necks, almost making them faint.

Cao Yang was big, but not brainless.

Experience teaches you once; he didn’t want to go through a second dark turmoil. If he really fainted, he’d completely lose face.

The strategist, Zeng Yunde, said nothing and became invisible.

Jiang Nian had also noticed Zhang Xiaofan, that jerk, before entering the cafeteria. But he was too lazy to pay him much attention, lest he get a sty in his eye.

That idiot, he’s the kind of person who stops barking after one punch to the mouth.

Instant noodles are the kind of thing that, if you don’t eat them for a while, taste like a national feast when you finally do. The flavor was decent, even quite good.

“Do you want an orange?” Chen Yunyun had already peeled an orange, removing the white pith, “I’ve tried it, it’s not sour.”

    You really deserve to die!

Zhang Xiaofan’s ears were sharp. In the empty cafeteria, he heard Chen Yunyun’s words and gnashed his teeth in hatred, but then he heard Jiang Nian say, “Okay, but it’s too much trouble. You just eat it yourself, no need to peel it for me.”

Chen Yunyun said, “Oh, it’s no trouble at all. I’m just sitting around anyway.”

Hearing this, Zhang Xiaofan’s hand, holding the RIO, trembled involuntarily.

Show off again, and I’ll make you fly!

Cao Yang didn’t want to conflict with Jiang Nian; he was a staunch dove. But as he buried his head in his meat, he couldn’t help but feel it wasn’t as delicious as before.

    Why was that?

If he could take Jiang Nian’s place, then eating instant noodles would be quite nice too.

Zeng Yunde didn’t have so many thoughts; smart people rarely overthink. He remained silent, devouring the crayfish.

But the more he ate, the more his lips felt numb.

He didn’t pay much attention, thinking that his fellow countryman had put too much Sichuan peppercorn. His lips were swollen from eating, almost losing all sensation.

Wang Yuhe couldn’t sit still, her eyes darting around. Her gaze swept over the three people at the table two rows over, and then she couldn’t tear her eyes away.

She looked once, then couldn’t help but look a second time.

She hesitated to speak, waiting until Jiang Nian finished his instant noodles. Only when the three of them were walking out did she finally blurt out.

“Hey, look at that person’s sausage lips.”

Jiang Nian turned his head, glanced, and said.

“Damn, he’s having an allergic reaction.”

No sooner had he spoken than the strategist, Zeng Yunde, collapsed onto the table, startling Zhang Xiaofan and Cao Yang, who were terrified.

“Holy crap, Brother Xiaofan, the food is poisoned!”

“Idiot! Quickly take him to the hospital!” Zhang Xiaofan, being more experienced, recognized at a glance that this was an allergic reaction, and immediately became irritable.

At the cafeteria entrance, the three faced each other.

“That was so scary, his face was all swollen.” Wang Yuhe patted her chest, “Good thing the security guard let them out.”

“They’re calling an ambulance, so of course they have to let them out,” Chen Yunyun said.

Jiang Nian was walking up the stairs and, hearing this, turned his head and said.

“The People’s Hospital isn’t far from here, a few minutes by taxi. Calling an ambulance is expensive, and not necessarily faster.”

    Entering the classroom.

Before his nap, Jiang Nian pulled a few oranges from his pocket. He originally intended to peel and eat them, but then remembered there was no one to peel the white pith, so he stopped.

The afternoon classes were still tedious, and the students in the class endured them with great difficulty.

Zhang Ningzhi listened quietly, finding even class enjoyable. She took diligent notes during class and napped during breaks.

Even so, she found she still couldn’t compare to Jiang Nian.

During the second math class break, she secretly peeked at Jiang Nian. Seeing him still full of energy, she found it absurd.

Before the last class, she poked Jiang Nian.

    “Aren’t you tired this afternoon?”

“Good stamina.” Jiang Nian directly pulled out an orange, put it in her hand, “Peel this for me, I’ll share half with you.”

“No, I’m so sleepy.” Zhang Ningzhi said this, but still leaned on the table, squinting her eyes as she finished peeling the orange.

The orange was peeled, and she had fallen asleep.

Three minutes later, Zhang Ningzhi suddenly woke up again. The class bell rang, and she divided the orange into two halves, handing one to Jiang Nian.

She quickly swallowed the other half herself, after all, she had painstakingly peeled it with her own hands.

The orange juice burst in her mouth, refreshing her mind.

Zhang Ningzhi’s eyes brightened, and she recovered some of her spirit. She secretly thought she should bring some fruit next time; it was more effective than coffee.

Everyone in the group had their own ways to stay awake. For example, Li Hua licked menthol oil on his tongue. Fangfang pricked her finger and squeezed out a drop of blood.

When Zeng You got sleepy reading a novel, he would slap himself. Wu Jun Gu ate mints and washed his face with cold water. Only Jiang Nian seemed to have eight kidneys.

He wasn’t sleepy at all in the afternoon.

At this moment, he complacently enjoyed the hand-peeling service. As he tossed the orange into his mouth, he collected the chemistry test paper from his desk.

The third period in the afternoon was still math class. The math teacher didn’t pay much attention to Jiang Nian, the poor student, and even during class questions, he tended to ask Zhang Ningzhi.

As for why he didn’t ask Li Hua, he was too fond of showing off.

Showing off in class, even the middle-aged math teacher couldn’t stand it. It was so awkward it made his toes curl in his shoes; he wished he could just stop class.

    That damn kid.

After math class, Jiang Nian also had some small gains.

Although the first round of review nominally still existed, in reality, math had already begun to focus on specific knowledge points in each lesson.

Jiang Nian, the low-scorer, wrote a horizontal stroke on the study card he “stole” from Zhizhi. The card had several ‘just’ characters written on it.

For each math knowledge point he mastered, he would write one stroke of the ‘just’ character.

This way, little by little, it would accumulate.

    Would he win?

After all the afternoon classes ended, Jiang Nian tucked his books into his arms. He planned to say hello to Cai Xiaoqing and go downstairs to the office.

After all, he had an appointment with Qingbao to ask for study guidance.

“Grandpa only wants a chicken coop!” Li Hua took advantage of the chaos after class to sing loudly, then added, “Nian, practice ball this afternoon.”

“The court’s wet, what chicken are we practicing?” Jiang Nian pouted, indifferent, his eyes only on his craving for 650.

“Holy crap! Do you still have a champion’s heart?” Li Hua grabbed his clothes, “Why is the captain so soft?”

“Champion’s heart?” Jiang Nian hesitated for a moment, then slapped his hand away, “Compared to that, I prefer the Leader’s Mark.”

“Where the hell am I supposed to find you Transformers!” Li Hua panicked.

“Then I suggest you learn Flame Shot. Maybe you’ll get a dedicated BGM.” Jiang Nian got up, ready to leave.

He patted Li Hua’s shoulder reassuringly.

“No one practiced, which means everyone practiced. If it’s really not working out, you think about tactics. I’ll handle the one-on-ones.”

Hearing this, Li Hua immediately couldn’t hold back.

    “red stone!!”

Jiang Nian squeezed past Zhang Ningzhi, said hello to Cai Xiaoqing, and left the classroom, heading downstairs to the office.

    In the science office.

Qingbao had been waiting for a long time, holding a teacup and looking at documents.

    “You’re here?”

“Mm.” Jiang Nian brewed himself a cup of tea, then refilled Qingbao’s teacup with hot water, and pulled a chair to sit beside her.

“Teacher, I have some questions about improving my chemistry score.”

“Oh?” Qingbao hesitated for a moment, blowing on her hot tea, “Go ahead and tell me. I happen to be free these days.”

“Okay.” Jiang Nian explained the ins and outs of why he was struggling with chemistry.

Qingbao listened quietly, tapping her fingers lightly on the desk. She didn’t give a definite answer, only saying she understood.

Jiang Nian rattled off all his questions, and he himself gained some clarity.

“Alright, Teacher, I’ll head back now.”

“Mm.” Qingbao nodded. As he reached the door, she called out to him again, “I’ve forgotten a lot of things about high school chemistry.”

“Wait for me to look through my books and ask other teachers.”

“OK.” Jiang Nian made a friendly ‘west eight’ gesture.

Coming out of the office, he happened to run into Xibao coming down the stairs.

She glanced at the lit science office, then at Jiang Nian, who was empty-handed, a hint of suspicion on her face.

“Looking for the biology teacher again?”

    Directly a large-scale love triangle.

Jiang Nian broke out in a cold sweat, thinking that Xibao, the old woman, was useless and had no more knowledge value to exploit. “No, I came down to pee.”

    “I’ll ask Teacher Zhong.”

“I have some questions about study planning for integrated science subjects and wanted to ask the biology teacher for advice.” Jiang Nian immediately became honest.

At the mention of integrated science, Xibao got a headache.

    “Alright, alright, you can go.”

“Teacher, are you taking your driving test (subject two) this week?” Jiang Nian suddenly asked before leaving, “I’m taking mine next week, and I’ll definitely pass.” Hearing this, Xibao’s breathing stopped. Remembering her failed subject two, her head hurt even more.

“What are you meddling in, kid!”

“Nothing, just letting the teacher know.” Jiang Nian lowered his gaze, feigning innocence, “I’ll have my driver’s license by the end of this month.”

That one sentence put Xibao under immense pressure.

    “Are you very proud?”

She gnashed her teeth in anger and walked away with quick, small steps. She secretly thought she had to hurry; she absolutely had to get her driver’s license this month.

The day she successfully passed, she would post furiously on her Moments!

    Jiang Nian went upstairs.

He never doubted passing the driving test, because he was the father of success.

Do you know what precision is? (Tactical lean back)

However, today’s incident did remind him of something. He should care about lonely elderly people, lest he be labeled an ungrateful wretch.

Using people when needed, then discarding them.

He wasn’t that kind of person.

Xibao had helped him quite a lot in the beginning. Her only flaw, perhaps, was that… this old woman was too lazy.

She had enjoyed slacking off so much, she couldn’t quit anymore.

    The afternoon dismissal bell rang.

A large crowd poured out of the classrooms, and the hallway instantly became crowded.

Yu Zhiyi deliberately bumped into Jiang Nian, who was walking against the flow, feeling like she had hit an iron plate. She gasped in pain, “Why are you so hard?”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Jiang Nian cursed, then pulled out a thick chemistry review book from his arms.

    Yu Zhiyi: “???”
