Chapter Index

The moment Li Qingrong averted her gaze, Jiang Nian understood.

Everything that happened last night… it was real!

The bet was made, and it was still ongoing.

“Do you often stay up late?” he asked curiously.

Li Qingrong hesitated for a moment, then shook her head.

    “No.”

“Oh, oh, remember to go to bed early.” Jiang Nian almost instinctively said that staying up late makes you not grow tall, but he looked at her and stopped himself.

    “Mhm.” Li Qingrong nodded.

Jiang Nian also turned back, continuing to ponder the chemistry problem. His chemistry foundation wasn’t bad; he just lacked an Opportunity like Qing Bao.

    Speedrun… Chemistry.

The chemistry accelerated students were chosen long ago; Jiang Nian couldn’t have all the good things.

But then again, whether the accelerated program was effective depended mainly on the subject teacher, and not every teacher was Qing Bao.

He had to find another way, or simply rely on himself.

As Jiang Nian was lost in thought, he suddenly remembered that Old Liu seemed to have mentioned the date of the next provincial joint exam yesterday, but he hadn’t remembered it at the time.

He wondered if it would be at the end of the month; if so, he was doomed.

This month was packed with a football match and driving lessons. There were quite a few things, not enough to become a burden but definitely distracting.

If the time was too short, he could only make up the time himself.

It was predictable that he would be dog-tired.

But… dogs weren’t actually that tired.

The spot beside Jiang Nian was empty. Li Hua had run off to the corridor to play football, and Zhi Zhi Bao Bao had gone to cling to Yao Beibei.

After much thought, he couldn’t help but get up.

Leaving the classroom, he heard a commotion from the corridor. He could vaguely hear a thud, probably the sound of a football being kicked.

At this moment, in the noisy corridor.

The class committee member, Tao Ran, stood quietly by the railing, hands in his pockets, watching the mountains and listening to the rain. He really did look somewhat like a person when he wasn’t speaking.

This was Class Three’s Minister of Rites!

One could vaguely sense a refined and scholarly aura emanating faintly from him.

Jiang Nian walked forward, preparing to ask Tao Ran something. Just as he lifted his foot, he saw Yu Zhiyi walking over from the other side of the corridor, pitter-pattering.

Then, a human-shaped Li Hua, one person and one ball, appeared from nowhere and, with lightning speed, knocked over Tao Ran, who was enjoying the rain.

    Jiang Nian: “???”

Yu Zhiyi giggled and stopped in front of Li Hua.

“Aren’t you afraid of getting caught playing football here?”

“Afraid of what? Just blame it on Jiang Nian.” Li Hua tossed his hair, feigning nonchalance, “Who told him to be the captain?”

Tao Ran, the class committee member who had just been knocked down and then slowly helped up by Li Hua, heard this and, deep in thought, turned to Li Hua and asked,

“You said, when a fox-eared girl falls, will her tail automatically avoid impact?”

    Li Hua:

    Yu Zhiyi:

Jiang Nian stood not far away, feeling somewhat speechless.

He could tell now, these people were all exceptionally skilled.

Li Hua, the filial son, was even more of a scoundrel, so practiced at selling him out, like the kind of person who would scrape paint off Yu Zhiyi’s chair and drink it with water.

Jiang Nian cleared his throat and walked over.

“Hua, I heard someone in the team betrayed me.”

As he spoke, he patted Li Hua’s shoulder three times, each pat heavier than the last, making Li Hua grimace.

“About this traitor, do you have any thoughts?”

Li Hua immediately let out a long “Ah” like an idiot.

    “I don’t know.”

Yu Zhiyi watched from the side, smiling. Just as she was about to say something, Jiang Nian waved her off, casually dismissing her.

The smile instantly vanished from her face; she was no longer giggling.

Jiang Nian didn’t care. He put his arm around Tao Ran’s shoulder, led him towards the railing, and immediately dropped a bombshell.

“I have an idea about beast-eared girls.”

    “Hmm?”

At the edge of the railing, after putting some distance between them and Yu Zhiyi, Jiang Nian finally let go of Tao Ran and got straight to the point.

“Bro, when is the provincial joint exam?”

Tao Ran pondered for a moment, then looked up and asked in return,

    “You said beast-eared girls…”

“Provincial joint exam.” Jiang Nian said with a look of certainty, not even blinking, “You’re hearing things, bro.”

Tao Ran looked a bit confused at this.

“Although I’ve been reading a lot of forbidden manga lately, is it that serious? I didn’t think it would come to… hearing things.”

“You need to exercise restraint.” Jiang Nian sighed, then changed the subject, “Alright, let’s continue talking about the provincial joint exam, shall we?”

“It might be early next month, after New Year’s Day.” Tao Ran said listlessly, “Anyway, I heard the teacher say that next month is all exams.”

“And after we come back next semester, exams will become the norm. In between exams, we’ll have the second round of review.”

After hearing Tao Ran’s words, Jiang Nian suddenly felt immense pressure.

However, with some extra time, it wasn’t impossible to improve by forty points. As long as he scored 650, he would go straight back home to burn incense.

When he returned home for the New Year, he would sit at the head of the table.

The rain fell all morning and only stopped at lunchtime.

Jiang Nian flipped through Class Two’s timetable and found that Qing Bao only had classes in the afternoon. He guessed she wouldn’t be in the office in the morning.

    So he gave up.

Great teachers and talented students achieve greatness together.

He didn’t think he couldn’t ask Qing Bao about chemistry problems; after all, she was the youngest graduate student and likely skipped grades during her studies.

What, how could a county high school have such educational resources?

Because while top-tier teachers were all flocking to provincial capitals, some people found it hard to leave their hometowns and, after weighing their options, simply returned home to teach.

For example, in a certain parallel class on the third floor, their biology teacher was a female PhD from Jilin University, yet she still taught in this small county.

Furthermore, the teacher recruitment system in Southern Province had been shrinking. They always said teacher positions weren’t valuable, but there were still countless applicants.

Only young people truly yearned for big cities.

Experienced teachers, steady as old dogs, just wanted to work in small towns. They would go shopping in big cities during holidays and travel for fun during winter and summer breaks.

Of course, participating in training was another matter.

He sent Qing Bao a WeChat message in advance to say hello, telling her he would come to find her in the afternoon to ask some study questions.

With a buzz, Qing Bao replied.

“Okay, come find me in the office during the last self-study period this afternoon.”

    Jiang Nian: “OK.”

Looking at it this way, it was clear who was younger.

Only old fogeys liked to say “Hao Hao Hao” (Okay, okay, okay) and then add “received.”

Qing Bao sent another pink emoji. It was completely out of character for her age, an incredibly cute and innocent emoji.

    (OK).

No, do you have mind-reading abilities?

Jiang Nian was unconvinced and replied with one.

    “Hao Nie.”

    Qing Bao: “Ke Ai Nie.”

Jiang Nian: “?????? Teacher, who taught you this?”

Qing Bao: “I saw my cousins sending them like this, what’s wrong? (Confused)”

Jiang Nian: “Nothing, are your cousins also in high school?”

    Qing Bao: “Elementary school.”

Seeing this, Jiang Nian silently closed WeChat.

Then again, comparison isn’t a good habit. Being in high school isn’t worse than being in elementary school; everyone is the same.

    Old geezer.

This kind of word is really bad, I don’t know who invented it.

Chen Yunyun swayed past the classroom door, and before leaving, she subconsciously looked back at the spot she looked at a dozen times every day.

He was still there, seemingly doing problems.

That person didn’t seem so diligent before; instead, he was always the first to run to the cafeteria after school. Then he started to change.

Was it because boys’ minds matured?

“He’s really working so hard.” Chen Yunyun sighed, “I need to work hard too, or I’ll be surpassed sooner or later.”

Wang Yuhe poked her head out and, hearing this, was a little unconvinced.

“I won’t be surpassed by him.”

Chen Yunyun turned to look at her and couldn’t help but smile.

“Our grades are close; if he surpasses me, won’t he also surpass you?”

    In the corridor.

Wang Yuhe frowned, thinking it seemed true. So she lowered her head and mumbled calculations for a while, then looked up as she went down the stairs.

“Yunyun, I’m going to score 640 next time.”

As soon as she said this, it drew glances from several boys on the stairs. After all, 640 was top five level even in an Olympiad class.

Of course, Class Three was at the top of the science Olympiad.

640 couldn’t guarantee a consistent top five spot; when the test was easy, it was possible to rank around sixth or seventh.

Jiang Nian scored 616 this time, roughly eighth place.

Ahead of him were Zhang Ningzhi, Yao Beibei, Chen Yunyun, Wang Yuhe, Tao Ran, the former biology class representative,

    and the Sacred Emperor.

This ranking wasn’t entirely fixed; sometimes these people would float down to eleventh or twelfth place.

Occasionally, Li Hua of red stone would even break into the top five.

But overall, a score of 640 was highly valuable. Even in a weekly test that no one cared about, it was a Heaven-Defying number.

So, when the guileless Wang Yuhe uttered this number,

the boys around them went through a mental journey from shock to disdain, then to doubt, quickly to numbness, and finally to heartbroken indignation.

What the hell are you talking about!

In broad daylight, don’t you know showing off is illegal!

Chen Yunyun didn’t feel embarrassed, because she knew very well that Wang Yuhe could indeed achieve it, so she nodded and said,

    “Mhm mhm.”

Hearing this, Wang Yuhe’s brows relaxed, and she said excitedly,

“This way, I won’t be surpassed by Jiang Nian.”

    In the classroom.

Jiang Nian was somewhat forgetting to eat and sleep. When a person is focused on something, they don’t really feel pain; they even enjoy it.

Like studying, every problem type brings a new sense of accomplishment.

It wasn’t until he saw an outrageous organic chemical formula that he stopped writing. He rubbed his eyes, unable to believe it.

    “Porcupene?”

A: Porcupene and ethylene are homologs. As noon break approached, Chen Yunyun and another girl returned to the classroom.

They saw that someone was still at his desk doing problems. They couldn’t help but feel surprised, exchanging glances, speechless for a moment.

Jiang Nian felt someone approaching and looked up.

Chen Yunyun had already sat down in Wu Jun Gu’s seat, and Wang Yuhe had taken Zeng You’s seat. Both were staring at him.

    “Didn’t you go eat?”

Jiang Nian heard this and showed a confused expression.

    “Oh ~ I forgot.”

He got up, his gaze sweeping over Wang Yuhe. Seeing her flat chest, he couldn’t help but suspect the scene he witnessed on the rooftop yesterday at noon.

It must have been an illusion, he was dizzy from the sun.

“What time is it now? If it’s too late, I can only eat instant noodles at the convenience store.”

“It’s twelve forty-five, the cafeteria is already closed.” Wang Yuhe slapped him on the arm, “You’re under the curse of gluttony now.”

Jiang Nian ignored her, thinking she was childish.

He turned to Chen Yunyun and asked,

“Is there anything you want to drink? I’ll get you a bottle from the convenience store. The condition is you don’t share it with her, not a single sip.”

Chen Yunyun got up and patted her pants.

    “I’ll go with you.”

Wang Yuhe was left directly in her seat, immediately sulking.

    “Who cares!”

Jiang Nian was almost at the door, then turned back to her and said,

“Come and lift the curse, otherwise how can I eat instant noodles? If I can’t get full no matter how much I eat, how much money would I waste?”

Only then did Wang Yuhe reluctantly get up, huffing twice.

    “Are you begging me?”

Jiang Nian scoffed, “I’m also skilled in some curses.”

    After the three left.

The two boys left in the classroom doing problems looked up, exchanged glances, and saw the shock in each other’s eyes.

    This can be done too?
