Chapter Index

Back at school, PE class was nearing its end.

Jiang Nian didn’t force Song Xiyun to eat with him, so as not to isolate Xu Qianqian, and generously let her return to her classroom.

As a slacker, he had nothing to do, so he decided to go back to the cafeteria to eat.

    While queuing, his phone buzzed.

A message popped up, showing the sender as Low Score…

: High Score Guy Lin Yuxi.

“Senior, are you eating in the cafeteria?”

Jiang Nian subconsciously turned his head. The cafeteria line was packed. He quickly scanned the area but didn’t see her.

He knew very well that Lin Yuxi’s persistent pursuit of him was purely based on his looks. She only cared about his Face and not his inner self.

What if he was some kind of’Silver Demon’ sliding into an empty slot?

Would she be even more excited?

Girls nowadays were like this; their choices and preferences were quite rash, no wonder they were so easily fooled by male celebrities.

He thought for a moment and typed a reply.

    “I’m going home to eat.”

    Buzz!

“Liar!” Lin Yuxi’s message was aggressive; though just text, it felt as if the person was about to jump out of the phone.

Jiang Nian felt that Lin Yuxi was the kind of girl who, when playing ‘Truth or Dare,’ could be tricked into buying a box of something from a convenience store.

He thought for a moment and simply didn’t reply.

    Suddenly, the next second.

“What a coincidence, Lu Yifeng, you’re here too?” A girl’s voice sounded by his ear, but it was directed at someone else.

Lin Yuxi acted cute in front of the slightly green boy behind Jiang Nian, then revealed her true intention, softly pleading.

“We’re all classmates, please, let me cut in line.”

    “Tsk, how spineless.”

Jiang Nian couldn’t help but inwardly scoff. He had thought Lin Yuxi was some high-level ‘Green Tea,’ but it turned out she was just a Face-seeker.

    “Please, give me some Face?”

The boy named Lu was blushing a little in front of everyone, possibly unable to resist Lin Yuxi’s cuteness.

Jiang Nian felt that the greater possibility was…

    :

: Making the decision to let someone cut in line in front of everyone, his conscience wouldn’t allow it.

    However, he still did it.

Lin Yuxi, the little devil, successfully cut in line behind Jiang Nian, then playfully patted Jiang Nian’s shoulder.

    “Senior.”

“Hello, first-time-meeting line-cutter.” Jiang Nian quickly distanced himself, “Next time, I’ll just report your student ID.”

Lin Yuxi immediately made a bitter Face and stomped her foot.

    “You’re doing it again!”

Jiang Nian got goosebumps and lowered his voice.

    “Stop that act.”

“Oh.” Lin Yuxi returned to normal, then remembered something and turned to the boy, “Thank you, by the way.”

Lu Yifeng was dumbfounded, having received a “thank you” card.

Logically, shouldn’t she have spoken to him first? Why was even the thank you card given while she was chatting with someone else?

However, since this spot was passively given by him, it wasn’t too humiliating, just a little unfair.

He nodded faintly and asked another question.

“Do you two know each other?”

“He’s a senior from my hometown, I’m just used to calling him that.” Lin Yuxi suddenly hugged Jiang Nian’s arm with her chest, pressing it directly in.

Jiang Nian was inexplicably taken advantage of by the infatuated girl, and his expression was quite displeased. He immediately pulled his arm out, cutting her off right there.

    “Not familiar.”

“Hehe, Senior, you really love to joke.” Lin Yuxi was quite thick-skinned, “Senior, what was your joint exam score?”

    “616.”

“So high! Doesn’t that mean you can get into a 985 university?” Lin Yuxi’s eyes sparkled.

Who could refuse a little fangirl?

“It’s alright. You can go to a club any time you have money.” Jiang Nian waved his hand, “Dancing and clubbing, do they even restrict scores?”

    Lin Yuxi: “…”

The line grew shorter and shorter, and soon it was their turn.

    Cafeteria corner.

“Senior, do you want to come in?”

“Forget it, so many people are watching.”

“It’s not that embarrassing, it can’t be helped. No one’s watching you now anyway, just come in.”

“It’s not that I care about Face, I just feel…”

    “It’s okay, I’m pretty tolerant.”

“Alright then, bear with it for a bit, it’s a little…”

Jiang Nian went in and sat with Lin Yuxi at a rather cramped, wall-side spot. Lin Yuxi was squeezed to one side.

There were too many people; they had to squeeze to sit down and eat.

It had to be said, once inside, it was quite comfortable. At least sitting down to eat, compared to standing, increased satisfaction by more than just one degree.

Eating while standing always made one feel like a laborer.

This brought back unpleasant memories for him. One year, he had temporarily studied at a certain rural junior high school to avoid trouble.

There was no proper cafeteria, and no tables or chairs either.

After the collective large rice basins were steamed, they were directly brought to an open space next to the dorms, where six or seven people would squat in a circle to eat.

The reason for not being able to build a cafeteria, he wouldn’t mention.

There were many strange things in that rural junior high, after all, it was a school built on a burial mound. Even the net on the ping-pong table was made from local materials.

“Hey, fellow villager, can I borrow your tomb brick?”

“No need to get up, no need to get up, you sleep, I’ll just take it myself.”

“Is it really that absurd?” Lin Yuxi’s eyes widened, listening to Jiang Nian recount his experiences in the rural junior high, which refreshed her understanding.

“Eat your food, why so much talk?” Jiang Nian didn’t continue, instead playing a game of ‘inch-stop.’

“Then…” Lin Yuxi fidgeted, asking softly, “Senior, did you have a girlfriend back then?”

Jiang Nian: “??? Is that all you have in your head?”

He and Lin Yuxi chatted about some meaningless topics, and their meal was almost finished.

    “I’m leaving.”

Lin Yuxi watched his departing back in the sunlight. She couldn’t help but purse her lips, a hint of unwillingness rising in her heart.

She had achieved a high score, but still couldn’t get closer to her senior. It seemed that what a certain philanthropist said was true.

Too high a score was not conducive to effort.

Since this path was blocked, she needed to think of other ways.

Walking back to the classroom, Jiang Nian had one hand in his pocket.

It wasn’t that he disliked hanging out with Lin Yuxi, but after all, there were two generations between first-year and third-year high school, and their daily lives differed too much.

One had just entered Zhennan Middle School, and her weekly mental reports were all about “How to Adapt to High School Life and Interpersonal Relationships.”

The other was about to graduate, with only half a year left. Every day was filled with exams, problem-solving, review, and more exams.

His weekly mental reports were about “Facing Exam Anxiety Correctly, Approaching Exams with a Positive Mindset, and Adjusting Mood to Prepare for the College Entrance Exam.”

For Lin Yuxi, what she needed was to experience, not to pursue a result, so she felt she was omnipotent.

Jiang Nian had limited time and energy and wouldn’t spend it on something without a result, so he would only chat with her occasionally.

Purely to pass the time, without investing any energy.

    Lunch break.

“Nian, you’re really a rotten cabbage.” Li Hua, for once, appeared in the classroom in the middle of the day, with Ma Guojun standing beside him.

“Why aren’t you two home?” Jiang Nian was stunned.

The sunlight penetrated most of the classroom, its overflowing quantity resembling an anime scene. The fat and thin immortals stood there, winking.

“We played soccer too late, too lazy to go back.” Ma Guojun’s plump Face was all smiles, “Then we went to the convenience store to eat instant noodles.”

“On the way, we saw you eating with a junior girl. Holy cow, you’re quite the player!”

Jiang Nian was awkward for a second but didn’t explain.

“Ah, you two found out. She really is a new junior I’m dating, she’s been pestering me relentlessly.”

Upon hearing this, Li Hua, who was tilting his head back to drink water, immediately lost his composure.

    Pfft!!

Like a leaky watering can, all the water in his mouth sprayed into the aisle.

“Hahaha, you’re talking too much nonsense. What kind of delusions are you having? A junior pestering you relentlessly?”

    Ma Guojun also chuckled, saying.

“You scumbag, you’ve got a lot of tricks up your sleeve, no wonder you’ve kept it hidden until now.”

Jiang Nian didn’t care at all, only remembering their mention of “playing soccer.” He recalled that Li Hua always played basketball.

“You guys played soccer during PE class?”

“Yeah, too bad you weren’t there.” Li Hua pulled a few tissues from Jiang Nian’s drawer, “Don’t you know the school is holding a soccer tournament?”

“I know, but Old Liu hasn’t officially announced it yet.” Jiang Nian sat back in his original seat, “Didn’t they also have some kind of ‘pot-throwing’ competition last time?”

“They put in so much effort, and the prizes are already decided. But they still haven’t said when the finals will be or where they’ll compete.”

“How can that be the same?” Ma Guojun also came over and pulled a tissue, pausing for a moment to say, “I heard the pot-throwing competition is handled by the subject director.”

“An old teacher who proposed some ‘233 Education Plan’ two years ago. He kept applying to set up an experimental class, and it was only approved this year.”

“This pot-throwing competition is tailor-made for these two experimental classes. Do you know how many people from one class are going?”

    “How many?” Jiang Nian asked.

Ma Guojun used his plump fingers to show a number.

    “Fifteen.”

“They definitely want to get first place, whether it’s in the number of awards or scores.” Li Hua walked over, grinning.

“They’re probably still waiting for their divine skill to reach Major Achievement, dragging out time for them to practice. Are they going to rush you to show off?”

Upon hearing this, Jiang Nian lost interest.

“They’re doing these meaningless things again. If students don’t study properly and spend all day playing pot-throwing competitions, what will they do for their college entrance exam?”

“They’ll fail miserably,” Li Hua said.

Ma Guojun pushed up his glasses, “Repeat a year.”

“Good heavens.” Jiang Nian’s mouth twitched, and he put the pot-throwing competition out of his mind, “So what’s the deal with the soccer tournament?”

“It’s organized by the school. You can win a prize by making it to the top four out of thirty-two.” Li Hua gave a charming smile, “There are individual and team awards too.”

“That’s it?” Jiang Nian was stunned.

“You’ll see when the time comes, I heard they’re giving out medals.” Li Hua lifted his shirt, revealing his ribs, “It’s quite showy.”

Ma Guojun turned back and added.

“Damn it, you absolutely have to come when we sign up!”

Upon hearing this, Jiang Nian realized that the chubby boy was also participating, and couldn’t help but ask curiously.

    “What’s your position?”

“Goalkeeper.” Ma Guojun grinned, “It’s a good thing there are very few people in our class who can play soccer, and even fewer who can play goalkeeper.”

“What about Li Hua? What’s his position?” Jiang Nian asked.

“Super!” Li Hua struck an Ultraman pose, raised his hand, and shouted loudly, “Major! Striker!”

“Is he good?” Jiang Nian turned to ask Ma Guojun.

    “A mess.”
