Chapter Index

They set off at two o’clock, and it was already four-thirty when they reached the mountaintop.

Jiang Nian was there, head bowed, playing on his phone, waiting for them to finish their endless photos.

His eyes were cast down, his figure tall and slender, like a secluded spring in an empty valley.

Before long, Lin Dong and the other three seemed ready to leave.

For some reason, they suddenly started walking towards Jiang Nian.

Lin Dong winked at him, giving him frantic eye signals.

Jiang Nian probably understood; Dongzi would owe him a favor.

Zhong Shulan smiled sweetly, not at all socially anxious. She waved at Jiang Nian and immediately greeted him.

    “Hello, Senior.”

Jiang Nian nodded but didn’t speak.

“Are you and Senior Lin Dong in the same class?” Gu Mengfei had a better figure, tending towards a mature, older sister style, but in front of Jiang Nian… she couldn’t quite pull it off.

“Yes, we are,” Jiang Nian said, sounding uninterested.

Perhaps sensing that the handsome guy was a bit unhappy, the two girls only exchanged greetings and then left.

    After descending the mountaintop,

Zhong Shulan couldn’t help but turn her head first and quietly asked Lin Dong,

“Brother Dong, is your classmate unhappy?”

Lin Dong waved his hand and casually bluffed,

“Not at all. It’s just that he’s very studious and isn’t interested in girls whose scores are below six hundred.”

“Huh?” Gu Mengfei was a bit stunned, the angle of her prominent mountain ridge flattening slightly. “How much?”

“Six hundred, I guess,” Lin Dong coughed.

“That’s not right. What about those two girls?” Zhong Shulan spotted the loophole and asked curiously, “Are their scores also above six hundred?”

If it were before the class promotion exam, Chen Yunyun’s scores usually hovered around five hundred eighty or ninety, but these past few months, she had experienced a bit of a breakthrough.

She shot straight up to six hundred thirty.

To be fair, Lin Dong himself couldn’t even score six hundred thirty.

    So, he nodded.

    “Yes, they all are.”

Zhong Shulan immediately felt a sense of terror and the unfairness of fate. Why could she be so beautiful and still score over four hundred?

What about the saying that God is fair?

Is this why Chinese people don’t believe in God? It’s too damn unfair!

She exchanged glances with Gu Mengfei, and both saw the shock in each other’s eyes, instantly rendering them speechless.

Gu Mengfei took a deep breath and couldn’t help but ask,

“Then… is that senior also six hundred points?”

“Oh, no, he’s not.” Lin Dong shook his head without hesitation. “He’s five hundred-something, so he likes those with six hundred points.”

If Jiang Nian had heard this, he would probably have gone red with anger on the spot.

Damn it! What’s wrong with five hundred points?!

I curse you to never watch anything with women in it again!

Hearing this, Gu Mengfei and Zhong Shulan breathed a sigh of relief.

Good, as long as it’s not six hundred points.

    God is indeed fair.

How should I put it? The hands of a three or four hundred-point guy feel clunky. But if it’s just five hundred points, it’s still not as good as a six hundred-point guy.

Chen Yunyun asked casually, “What did… the group leader say to you just now?”

“Nothing, just a greeting.” Jiang Nian looked around. “It’s getting dark, shall we go down the mountain?”

“Mm, if we don’t go now, it’ll be too late.” Chen Yunyun pursed her lips, quietly letting out a sigh of relief. “Are we taking the same path as before?”

“Let’s take the main road,” Jiang Nian said. “After dark, there’s no light at all in the woods, and who knows what dirty things might be out there.”

“You’re doing it again!” Wang Yuhe jumped in fright, rushing over to give Jiang Nian another flurry of light punches.

No one was more like a startled bird than her.

The three walked down the stairs, and Jiang Nian boasted as they went.

“What’s this? In junior high, I even played the Four Corners game with someone in an empty classroom. You know, that one, have you heard of it?”

Hearing this, Chen Yunyun was a little scared, her shoulders slightly hunched.

“Don’t talk about it, I’m a little scared.”

Wang Yuhe was also a bit scared, but this time they were going down a flat road. The sky had cleared and the rain had stopped, and she felt like she was capable again.

    “And what happened?”

“What happened was, two sets of footsteps appeared simultaneously in the classroom,” Jiang Nian said eerily. “That is, the fifth personality.”

Wang Yuhe paused for a moment, then came to her senses, exasperated.

    “You, you, you!!!”

Going down the mountain was easier, taking less than half an hour.

    But it was also dark.

A desolate road connected to the distant mountains, surrounded by dark hills. Visibility was low, and the sky was grayish-blue.

A small car zoomed past the roadside.

Chen Yunyun was a little flustered and tugged at Jiang Nian’s clothes, asking,

    “Is there still a bus?”

“Uh… yes, there is, but it’s not always on time.” Jiang Nian looked at the increasingly dark sky, frowning, “It’s not too far from the riverside here, let’s start walking back. If we see a car on the way, we’ll hitch a ride back.”

“Okay,” Chen Yunyun and Wang Yuhe both agreed.

Mainly because it was too dark, and the road was too far from Qingmuling Village. Jiang Nian, plus two young girls standing by the road.

Even if something happened, no one on that side might hear it.

Although Jiang Nian was full of youthful vigor and a local, even if he pitched a tent alone and slept by the roadside, he wouldn’t be afraid.

But that didn’t mean the two girls beside him weren’t afraid, so for safety’s sake, it was better to leave early.

On the dark road, the three walked with flashlights.

They walked unsteadily forward, the dark road seemingly endless. Walking forward into the darkness made one feel uneasy.

The wilderness appeared even more eerie.

Wang Yuhe and Chen Yunyun walked side by side, timidly and uneasily on the inner side of the road, with Jiang Nian on the outermost side.

“Don’t be afraid, we’ll see Qingmu Bridge in a few more minutes.” He walked close to Chen Yunyun, comforting her in the darkness.

Chen Yunyun turned to look at him, feeling a little more reassured.

    “Mm.”

Sure enough, after turning a corner, the three saw the brightly lit Qingmu Bridge.

“Bridge!” Wang Yuhe seemed like a broken record, repeating the word ‘bridge’ endlessly. “It really is a bridge, so big!”

Red characters hung above the bridge, and beneath it was a branch of the South River, like a ferry for Souls.

In the darkness, it appeared solemn and mysterious.

“Wang Yuhe, that’s all your cultural level is,” Jiang Nian scoffed. “Besides ‘big,’ do you have any other adjectives?”

“None of your business! Hmph!” Wang Yuhe stuck out her head and rolled her eyes at him.

“This is my first time crossing a bridge, and it feels different from riding in a car during the day,” Chen Yunyun said, letting out a sigh of relief.

On the opposite bank of the bridge was a brightly lit county town, with new residential areas lining the river.

After crossing the bridge, they still didn’t see a bus catching up from behind. Instead, they saw a bus heading into the mountains, which made them feel somewhat fortunate.

“Good thing we didn’t wait there, otherwise we’d definitely be late,” Jiang Nian said.

    “Yeah,” Chen Yunyun nodded.

What she didn’t say, however, was that waiting there for half an hour would probably scare them to death. At the same time, she couldn’t help but sigh, boys really are braver.

They walked all the way to the riverside and saw the street-side shops.

Chen Yunyun and Wang Yuhe suddenly felt like they had returned from the primitive mountains to modern society, and they couldn’t help but smile.

There was no need for a bus after that; the riverside was only two kilometers from the school.

The three timed it perfectly, found a wonton shop to eat something, and rushed, finally arriving at the classroom before evening self-study.

In the classroom, the lights were as bright as snowflakes.

Jiang Nian habitually walked towards the back door, pushed it open, and found someone sitting in “his seat,” causing him to be momentarily dazed for two seconds.

Seeing the unfamiliar faces of an entire six-person group, he then came back to his senses.

Oh, the seats had been changed.

He nonchalantly walked from the back row towards the teacher’s desk, stopping at the second row. His seat was in the middle, so he had to enter through Zhang Ningzhi’s spot.

Zhang Ningzhi was hunched over her desk doing homework, but she had actually already seen Jiang Nian.

As soon as Jiang Nian had parted ways with Chen Yunyun and Wang Yuhe at the front door of the classroom, she had seen him and wondered why he was using the back door.

Sure enough, he was back again.

But she didn’t want to deal with Jiang Nian, so she pretended to be nonchalant and continued writing.

Suddenly, she felt her shoulder being lightly patted twice.

Zhang Ningzhi couldn’t help but frown, turning her head to the other side instead.

    “What?”

“Let me in,” Jiang Nian raised an eyebrow.

“No, you go through the group leader’s side,” Zhang Ningzhi pouted, deliberately shifting her butt back to occupy the entire chair.

With sixty or seventy people in the classroom, the individual space was very narrow.

By sitting back like that, she practically blocked all the gaps.

“I won’t.” Jiang Nian pinched the soft flesh on Zhang Ningzhi’s arm through her clothes. “I just like coming in through your spot, move over.”

“You’re mean,” Zhang Ningzhi reflexively pulled her hand back.

“Stop using Teacher Dabing’s meme, I’m coming in,” Jiang Nian said, embarrassed, and forcefully pushed her forward.

“Hmph,” Zhang Ningzhi reluctantly made way.

The girl’s clothes were pressed down by the desk, creating a beautiful curve across her chest.

After Jiang Nian sat down, he didn’t forget to turn his head and say hello.

    “Class… Li…”

His mind wrestled with itself, getting stuck.
