Chapter Index

At the same time, in the girls’ dormitory in the North District.

Chen Yunyun hesitated over the clothes in her storage box, unsure what to wear tomorrow. After all, clothes make the man, and they were going out of school.

“Shower,” Wang Yuhe urged, poking her head out from the balcony.

    “Oh, oh, coming.”

Chen Yunyun grabbed her underwear and pajamas and headed to the bathroom. The dormitory lights had already been turned off at the scheduled time. Dorm checks for girls’ dorms weren’t too frequent, once or twice a week.

After some rustling, the sound of water came from the bathroom.

Wang Yuhe had tied all her hair up with a hairband to avoid getting it wet while showering. This was one of the many small gadgets Chen Yunyun had given her, convenient and practical.

Under the dim light of a flashlight, the girls showered with buckets in the small bathroom.

Chen Yunyun’s mind was blank, still wondering what to wear tomorrow. As she washed, water accidentally splashed onto Wang Yuhe next to her, and she looked up blankly.

To Wang Yuhe’s shocked gaze, Chen Yunyun, as if possessed, used a towel to wipe her chest.

    Something was off.

“Yunyun, what’s wrong with you? You’re so distracted.”

“Huh?” Chen Yunyun snapped back, blinking. They were so familiar, there was no need to apologize. “Oh, oh, I was just spacing out.”

“I know, you must be hungry.” Wang Yuhe thought for a moment, then stated with certainty, “You ate so little this afternoon, just a few bites.”

“Uh, I didn’t have much appetite,” Chen Yunyun casually brushed her off.

Sure enough, Wang Yuhe was also a simple-minded elementary schooler.

“Oh, oh, by the way, I want to tell you something.”

Hearing this, Chen Yunyun’s showering movements paused for a moment, her expression slightly surprised.

    “What is it?”

“I want to tell you something” – this opening was usually a girl’s go-to for gossip, and the next sentence would almost always start with someone’s name.

But Chen Yunyun never expected this opening line to come from Wang Yuhe’s mouth one day.

    Had she grown up?

“During the fourth period of evening self-study, I saw Chai Muying sewing curtains,” Wang Yuhe whispered, then laughed at herself after speaking.

    Chen Yunyun: “?”

Chai Muying was in the same dorm as them, always a bit muddle-headed. Last month, she went home for National Day and forgot to bring her quilt, which her dad eventually had a fellow villager deliver.

    After showering and washing clothes.

Chen Yunyun sat cross-legged on the top bunk, once again agonizing over what to wear tomorrow. In her indecision, she turned to look at Wang Yuhe, seeing her preparing to hang clothes.

Both girls were wearing pajamas. A soft hook was nailed to the wall of the top bunk for hanging clothes. She just casually hung two items, no different from how she usually dressed at school.

    Alright, she continued to agonize.

On the other side of the girls’ dormitory.

Yu Zhiyi had also just finished showering and opened her phone to a flood of messages.

As the Mental Health Committee Member, she couldn’t refuse students’ consultations, especially on her first day. Forgetting her roots now was too premature; she had to at least last a few days.

So, she perked up and read through them one by one.

Sun Zhicheng: “Mental Health Committee Member, is my hair really that ugly? (crying)”

She thought for a moment and replied.

    “Yes.”

Sun Zhicheng replied instantly, “I feel so bad! (crying!!)”

Yu Zhiyi: “(Congratulations on getting rich) Don’t feel bad, just get a haircut at the salon.”

Three seconds later, Sun Zhicheng replied again.

    “Why only one dime?”

Yu Zhiyi half-lay against the headboard, saw Sun Zhicheng’s message, and couldn’t help but curl her lips.

She thought, ‘What a pathetic guy, does he really expect me to pay for his haircut?’

But she couldn’t say that, because she was the gentle Mental Health Committee Member, so she typed:

“The Mental Health Committee Member’s family also has no extra food. The thought is what counts.”

Sun Zhicheng replied, “What if it still doesn’t look good after a trim?”

Yu Zhiyi frowned, thinking that sometimes one had to look for reasons within oneself.

“Classmate, you absolutely must not feel stressed. We must be positive and optimistic. How about this, I’ll give you a small suggestion: we can take a leave of absence first.”

    Sun Zhicheng: “Huh?”

Yu: “It’s like this, I checked on UC, hair can grow back in two months. Tomorrow you apply, I’ll approve it, take a two-month leave of absence, then come back to school.”

Exiting, she saw Lin Dong’s message. She had deleted this scoundrel, but for other reasons, she had to add him back.

It had to be said, Lin Dong was a complete idiot.

Lin Dong: “Mental Health Committee Member, I feel uncomfortable.”

She replied, “Pure evil, slap yourself.”

Lin Dong: “I feel even worse.”

    She: “Jump off a building.”

After replying, Yu Zhiyi felt that Lin Dong’s group probably had some serious issues. In comparison, messages from other classmates were much more normal.

After replying to everyone, it was almost midnight.

She scrolled down, directly ignoring Li Hua’s message.

This person was also abstract, but his messages could be directly ignored; replying was a waste of life.

Looking through everything, she still felt something was missing.

Yu Zhiyi tapped into the class group chat and scrolled through the member list for a while.

Only then did she realize she didn’t have Jiang Nian as a friend at all; to be precise, he had never added her.

No wonder tonight felt so smooth, and her replies were so effortless; it was because the Heaven-Defying person wasn’t there.

    Should she add him?

Of course not, adding him would be purely masochistic.

    The next day.

Jiang Nian woke up early. Although he slept late, he never lingered in bed.

Generally, sleeping a few extra minutes only made him more tired; he was used to catching up on sleep in the classroom.

There were three benefits: he ate breakfast on time, nourishing his body; he caught up on sleep, healing his spirit; and he out-competed his classmates, gaining happiness. That he, Jiang Nian, could be where he was today! It was all thanks to his extraordinary talent and hard work.

He brushed his teeth while checking his QQ alt account messages.

Zhou Yuting and Yu Tongjie both gave different responses, but both said a lot of irrelevant things.

They were probably flustered, a little bit broken.

Jiang Nian was not in a hurry; fishing for big fish required a struggle.

Being too eager could desensitize them, and if it really came to reporting him. For Jiang Nian, it wouldn’t be without benefits, but at the very least, it would be thankless work.

He planned to reply to their messages tonight, letting them panic a bit.

After washing up, he left the house.

The classroom lights were on in the morning, and only a few scattered individuals could be seen.

“Morning,” Huang Fang looked up and greeted him.

He who accepts food from others speaks softly, and he who accepts gifts from others has weak hands. It was hard not to greet him after drinking his beverage.

But if she were to say ‘thank you’ in return, Huang Fang felt it would be too deliberate.

In short, even Empress Fang, who only focused on studying, would worry about small things.

“Morning, Fangfang.” Jiang Nian tossed his backpack down and bent over to retrieve his water bottle from the desk drawer. “You come so early every day, and your complexion is still so good.”

“Is it?” Huang Fang was ultimately a girl, and ultimately cared about her complexion. She reached for her deskmate Wu Jungu’s mirror and looked at herself. “Then what would a bad complexion look like?”

Jiang Nian said, “Like Zeng You.”

As soon as Huang Fang thought of Zeng You’s face, as white as paper every day, she couldn’t help but laugh.

Jiang Nian also brought Zhizhi’s thermos bottle along and ambled to the corridor to fill it with hot water.

These days, even male models were in a rat race; if you wanted a drink, you had to work for it.

“That I, Jiang Nian, could be where I am today… never mind, I won’t say it.”

Gurgle gurgle, the water heater made a noisy sound.

Then a hot, somewhat disgusting feeling. Anyway, this black-hearted school didn’t even bother to have the idiot boss fix the hot water machine.

All they knew was to sell water cards and collect money, idiots.

Jiang Nian suspected that this machine would never be cleaned from its production to its use, and even after it was scrapped.

Sometimes, when he drank, there was a metallic taste.

Damn it, he was basically drinking iron-fortified blue bottle calcium.

    “You’re getting water too?”

A familiar voice came from behind, a girl’s voice.

Jiang Nian was slightly surprised, turning to find that it was Ji Jiayu, who had transferred to Class Two.

Although her name had a ‘yu’ in it, she actually had a super good mindset.

Even arguing with her boyfriend in public, which once made the local headlines.

It even alarmed the grade group to issue a disciplinary action, thus forcing her to transfer to Class Two.

Now, seeing her former classmate, knowing that the other person knew her dark history. Yet, she could be so calm and composed, even taking the initiative to say hello.

Her expression and demeanor were like a girl experiencing her first love.

It had to be said, extraordinary people do extraordinary things.

Ji Jiayu herself had some skills; at least in terms of mindset, she had outrun ninety-nine percent of high school students.

Jiang Nian always respected capable people.

After all, Ji Jiayu had already transferred classes, and they no longer had that small conflict during lunch break.

Such people, as long as they weren’t too close, were quite good as general friends.

“Ah, morning, when did you get here?” Jiang Nian smiled. “Why do you walk without a sound? You scared me.”

Ji Jiayu found it a bit hard to maintain her composure, and after a moment of hesitation, said,

“I was already here when you were banging on the hot water machine to vent your frustration.”

“Huh?” Jiang Nian felt a tiny bit awkward, scratching his head. “No wonder I didn’t hear footsteps, but I wasn’t venting frustration, I was just swatting a bug.”

Ji Jiayu tilted her head and smiled.

    “Oh, anyway, I believe you.”

Jiang Nian switched to another cup to fill with water and casually asked,

“Why did you transfer to Class Two?”

    “Hmm?”

“The teachers in Class Two and our class teachers, well, they largely overlap.” Jiang Nian chatted. “You went through all that trouble, isn’t it like you didn’t even switch classes?”

“Do you wish I’d transferred to Class One?” Ji Jiayu rolled her eyes at him.

    “No, I was just curious.”

“Because the grade group leader is my uncle, he definitely wouldn’t transfer me to Class One.” Ji Jiayu’s eyes curved into a smile, then she suddenly covered her mouth, looking as if she had misspoken.

“I’ve only told you, don’t tell anyone else, okay?”

Jiang Nian had finished filling his water bottles. He turned, holding the two cups, and looked at her, unable to help but smile.

    “Even your boyfriend doesn’t know?”

Ji Jiayu looked up, meeting Jiang Nian’s gaze, smiling.

“Then do you want to know?”

Jiang Nian didn’t even blink, the smile on his face fading. He brushed past her.

    “You guess.”

Ji Jiayu froze for a moment, then turned to look.

Jiang Nian had already walked away.

The corridor was long, leaving only a slender back.

As morning self-study approached, the classroom gradually filled with more people.

Li Hua slid in through the front door of the classroom, making a shocking announcement.

    “Damn it, I’m depressed.”
