Chapter 6 Quota
by SunflowerRoyal Court Academy is the Old Federation’s highest-ranking military school. This school is divided into an inner and outer campus, and it has a very long history; it is said to have existed even before the Federation was founded, thus the academy’s admissions are incredibly strict.
Tang Yan tapped the table, looking as if he was disappointed in their lack of progress.
“You need to be confident. This year, Royal Court Academy’s inner campus has given our Thirteenth District a quota of ten people, and the outer campus has a quota of one thousand people.”
“Teacher, the Thirteenth District has 3 million examinees this year. With such a small quota, it’s really going to be tough.”
“That’s right, I guess only the top few students in our school have a chance.”
The students in the classroom sighed one after another.
“If you can’t get into the inner campus, try for the outer campus! If that doesn’t work, try for a regular academy! I know it’s difficult, but I’m not making things hard for you; I’m worried about you! If you get into Royal Court Academy’s inner campus, you’ll be high-ranking military officers upon graduation, and you’ll be key cultivation prospects, each of you a precious asset with boundless futures!”
“Of course, if you don’t get into the inner campus, getting into the outer campus is also very good. After graduation, you’ll be assigned to good positions, and your future will also be bright. If you really can’t get in, you still need to find a way to get into a higher academy. That way, even if you enter the military after graduation, you can at least become a corporal or sergeant, greatly increasing your survival rate.”
Tang Yan spoke earnestly.
“Teacher, what if none of us get in?”
The student with yellow hair asked helplessly.
“If none of you get in, then you can only participate in the red-black lottery and become reserve soldiers, commonly known as cannon fodder! Don’t think I’m joking with you; once you become cannon fodder soldiers, you will be dispatched to the most dangerous places to serve.”
Tang Yan reminded them seriously.
When Su Ming heard this, his brows furrowed even more. The Old Federation’s conscription system was like this.
If you attend a higher academy, you can defer for four years, otherwise, you must participate in the military service red-black lottery. Those who draw a red sign serve in the military, and those who draw a black sign do not, with a 50/50 probability for each.
Those who are drawn are reserve soldiers and will be sent to various battle zones for training. The mortality rate is extremely high, no different from cannon fodder.
Therefore, for everyone, this was a nightmare.
However, students who graduate from Royal Court Academy become officers immediately upon graduation and are key cultivation targets, absolutely not to be casually used as cannon fodder.
Of course, drawing a black sign and not having to serve in the military doesn’t mean everything is fine; you must find a regular job and cannot be unemployed, otherwise, you will have to continue participating in the lottery the following year until ten years later when you no longer need to participate in military service.
From this, it can be seen that the Old Federation’s military strength was very strained.
“Ah, can we not participate in the red-black lottery?!”
Many students complained tearfully.
“Impossible, unless your physical condition does not permit it. But I advise you not to have any crooked thoughts; this certification is very strict. Don’t even think about intentionally self-harming to escape; the reviewers are not to be trifled with. Once it’s confirmed to be intentional, you’ll be locked up for the rest of your life.”
Tang Yan warned very sternly.
In fact, the reason Su Yuan and his wife indulged Su Ming to eat so much and get so fat wasn’t entirely out of doting; it was somewhat intentional, to make things easier to handle once Su Ming came of age.
“Sigh, got it.”
Many students said dejectedly.
“Alright, I’ve finished with the bad news. Now, let me tell you something good. After the City Exam, you will have a year-long holiday, also known as Freedom Day! You can play to your heart’s content! There will be welfare subsidies too.”
Tang Yan said with a smile to all the students.
“Oh yeah!”
The yellow-haired student and others immediately cheered excitedly.
So-called Freedom Day was actually a holiday for everyone to rest and play to their heart’s content, enjoying life.
Therefore, the City Exam results would not be announced immediately but after the holiday ended, and the red-black lottery would also begin then.
Tang Yan raised his hand, signaling everyone to be quiet, then coughed and cleared his throat, saying,
“Alright, we’ve finished discussing the City Exam matters. Now, let’s quickly begin our review. Also, there are no classes this afternoon and tomorrow morning; you are free to review, don’t be lazy. Also, remember to prepare; tomorrow afternoon, our class will go to Machine Room 3 for mech simulation combat training.”
“Understood.”
Many students responded in unison.
Su Ming’s eyes flickered slightly upon hearing this. In fact, they had already been divided into different subjects and classes.
The City Exam results were divided into two parts: one part was the basic cultural subject score, which everyone had to take, and the test papers were the same.
The other part was bonus points, which varied depending on the chosen subject. Optional subjects included Command, Mech, Fighter Jet, Land Combat, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and so on, with Command and Mech being the most popular subjects.
Of course, these elective subjects also determined what subjects you would study after entering a higher academy. For example, if your elective subject was Command, you would major in Command after entering a higher academy and most likely become a commanding officer. If you majored in Mech, you would be assigned to a mech legion after graduation.
As for those whose elective subjects were Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, they would pursue careers as scientific researchers and technical workers.
Although they were elective subjects, their weighting in the City Exam was extremely high, no less than the scores for the basic subjects.
At this moment, Tang Yan picked up his lesson plan and began explaining some key knowledge points to everyone.
“First, turn to Lesson Sixteen. Let’s review the key points of linear functions.”
Su Ming opened his textbook to the content Tang Yan was reviewing, and looking at the dense line graphs and numbers, his brows twitched slightly.
These knowledge points were all so new; he had never encountered them before.
Fortunately, that kid was usually quite diligent. Although his foundation was only average, it was at least readable. On a 150-point paper, getting eighty or ninety points was not a problem.
There was still a month left. As long as he desperately crammed, he might still have a chance.
Thinking this, Su Ming listened attentively to Tang Yan’s lecture.
At noon.
Su Ming walked out of the classroom, reading a book.
“Did you see that? That fat otaku is actually reading while walking. Has he changed?”
“That’s rare. Forget it, don’t mind him. Maybe he wants to surprise everyone.”
“With his half-baked grades, forget it. To put it bluntly, Lin Chuyu’s basic score, on a 150-point paper, always hovers around 145.”
“That’s true.”
Su Ming kept flipping through the book, rapidly imprinting the content into his mind, completing his knowledge memory.
Soon after, Su Ming returned to his dormitory based on memory. He found his bed, took out clothes from inside, then went into the bathroom to wash up and change into looser clothes.
After doing all this, Su Ming directly pulled open his drawer and took out his library card and a synthetic chocolate bar.
This chocolate bar was his lunch.
