Chapter 99: Interior (3rd Update, Asking for Monthly Tickets!)
by SunflowerThump, thump.
The three turned on the tactical flashlights on their guns and began to move across the platform. Besides the flickering fluorescent lights, the surroundings were pitch black.
“Wow… it’s so new.”
Kiki shone her flashlight around as she walked. “You can tell it was just built not long ago.”
“This underground city isn’t even finished yet. I estimate not even 1/5 of it is complete,” Lin Xian said in a low voice. “Built with the full force of the Federation, but it couldn’t even save a million people…”
“It’s not the only underground city. Although the federal government has collapsed, there are definitely larger underground cities. I just don’t know what their situation is like.”
“Shh!”
Lin Xian, who was walking in front, suddenly stopped.
Dalou and Kiki immediately tensed up.
Lin Xian raised his flashlight and shone it on a pillar at the edge of the platform not far away. There, a man in work clothes was standing with his back to them in the corner of the pillar, his whole body twitching slowly.
Soon, the light caught his attention. The man slowly turned around, and his face immediately made the three’s expressions change slightly.
The man’s face was completely rotten and mutated, not looking human at all. Instead, it had grown something like fleshy tentacles, with a mouthpart full of sharp teeth in the middle, bright red, a horrifying sight.
“What… what is this thing? A zombie?” Kiki asked in surprise.
“It’s not human, anyway.”
Hiss~ Gurgle gurgle.
The humanoid monster made a strange wriggling sound, the fleshy tentacles on its face constantly twitching. Seeing Lin Xian’s group, it suddenly let out a shrill scream.
Ah!!!
Then it charged over at high speed.
Its speed was not like that of a running zombie at all; it was like an athlete, extremely fast, and its charge was very oppressive.
“Do it!” Lin Xian immediately shouted.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Because he didn’t know what this thing was, Lin Xian didn’t dare to be careless. The three opened fire at the same time, unleashing a torrent of firepower.
Several bullets hit its body, causing a spray of flesh and blood. The zombie staggered from the impact of the bullets, but it didn’t seem to be killed directly. Instead, it charged even faster.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat!
Noticing that something was wrong, the group immediately fired another volley, all aiming for the fleshy tentacles and mouthpart on the zombie’s face. The terrifying head was quickly blown apart, and it finally fell to the ground. And even after falling, the fleshy tentacles on the man’s face continued to twitch and writhe. It was a while before they gradually stopped moving.
“This thing is not right. It’s not like an ordinary zombie. Everyone be careful.”
Lin Xian was secretly alarmed. The three of them were all metahumans and armed with firearms, but the mutated zombie they encountered this time had a vitality that was countless times more tenacious than the ordinary zombies they had met before, and it was also particularly fast.
“So disgusting. Why is it so hard to kill?” Kiki frowned.
“Could it be an anomaly?” Dalou also spoke up at this moment.
Lin Xian shone his flashlight over and found that there was no black energy fluctuation on the dead zombie’s corpse, just a fleshy body. He couldn’t help but frown. “It shouldn’t be…”
He looked at the time. It was only 18:02. But although it wasn’t dark yet, ever since the encounter in North Bay, he also knew that some things didn’t necessarily only appear in the dark; they could also be in specific places.
A place like this underground city, dark and sunless, might not be any better than the night.
“Don’t let your guard down. Let’s go.”
Lin Xian tensed his nerves. The group began to quicken their pace. Following a ground conveyor belt, they soon arrived at a large elevator entrance. It was a large freight elevator several meters long. Before they even got close, the interface of the control platform next to the elevator suddenly lit up.
A woman’s face appeared on the screen. She was wearing a research uniform and glasses, looking capable and only in her thirties.
“Mr. Lin, hello. We will open the elevator for you now.”
“You’re the Ding Junyi who just contacted me, right?” Lin Xian asked.
“I am.”
Lin Xian nodded. On the screen, besides Ding Junyi, he could also see two women and one man standing behind her, all dressed as scientists. Seeing this, Lin Xian felt a slight sense of relief.
“Open the door.”
On the screen, Ding Junyi spoke, “Be careful. The surveillance shows there is accumulated water in the elevator. There may be unknown creatures. Stand back first.”
“What unknown creatures?” Kiki asked curiously, taking two steps back.
Lin Xian made a gesture to move back.
“Stand to the sides.”
Whirr~
The sound of the elevator descending was heard.
Lin Xian’s group immediately retreated, watching the elevator’s numbers on the screen and slowly raising their guns.
[Elevator has arrived. Level 65: Level-Four Freight Rail Terminal.]
A mechanical female voice sounded. Then, the huge elevator door slowly opened from the middle, upwards and downwards.
In an instant, an elevator space the size of a room appeared. At the same time, a foul-smelling, yellowish accumulated water, more than a meter deep, suddenly gushed out. Whoosh, Lin Xian’s group retreated repeatedly.
Lin Xian was quick-eyed and quick-handed. He immediately saw many strange objects writhing in the murky water and shouted to the other two, “There’s something in the water!”
Bang bang bang bang! Bang bang bang bang!
The three guns immediately began to pour out firepower. The several black objects writhing in the water were instantly splattered with blood. The accumulated water quickly receded, and soon they saw the strange writhing things. They were multi-legged creatures with black carapaces, four or five of them in total. These monsters were soaked in the water, attached to several highly decomposed and bloated corpses, seemingly some kind of parasitic creature.
“So disgusting!” Kiki said.
“Don’t be careless. Kill them first!” Lin Xian shouted.
Bang bang bang bang!
Fortunately, thanks to Ding Junyi’s reminder, Lin Xian’s group was prepared in advance. These few monsters were hit by a volley of fire from Lin Xian’s group as soon as they were washed out by the water. The metal projectiles directly blasted them to pieces.
Argh!!!
The continuous sound of gunfire echoed through the huge platform, seeming to attract the attention of many creatures. Hearing this, Lin Xian immediately called out, “Get on the elevator, quick!”
Kiki and Dalou immediately rushed in. Lin Xian also quickly stepped in, and the elevator door closed rapidly.
“Oh no, there are still a lot of monsters in this place. What about Sister Chen and the others?” Kiki asked with some worry as the elevator door shut out the darkness of the platform outside.
“It’s fine. They’re safer than us,” Lin Xian said sternly.
The armor of the Infinity was airtight and could even withstand the scraping of the atmospheric jellyfish’s tentacles. Moreover, Teacher Chen and Shasha had many weapons on the train to defend themselves. Lin Xian was quite confident about this.
Whirr~
The elevator door closed. The group stepped onto the wet floor. A huge lifting force came, and the elevator quickly went up to the upper floors.
“The elevator exit is in Area K2. There are many monsters in the corridor outside. There is a route map from K2 to D23, but some parts of the ground have accumulated water. The terrain is a bit complicated and will be a detour. The communication systems in some places are damaged, so I can’t give you hints all the way. Also, be especially careful when you pass through areas F5 and D6. That’s where the floor elevators and stairwells are, the most heavily fallen areas. The original escape route was also there, but it must be blocked by now. The power and surveillance facilities have all been cut off.”
