Chapter Index

    *Screech~*

Finally, the “Infinity” pulled into the very front of the track 7 sequence, beginning to wait for the control tower’s dispatch.

In an instant, Lin Xian felt as if he had re-entered the order of human society. The sense of lonely drifting in the dark night diminished significantly.

The train came to a steady stop. Lin Xian opened the car door and stepped out. As far as he could see, the vast airport platform was densely packed with convoys waiting in sequence. After nightfall, all the large entrance and exit gates of the airport had been closed and sealed.

Under the dark night, the sky was dim. The machine gun sentry posts on the airport’s high walls continuously spewed fire. Several 1130 close-in weapon systems guarded the airspace. On the building platform above the ascension elevator, two electromagnetic railguns emitted faint blue electric arcs. Besides these, there were many damaged and non-functional defensive installations. It was clear that these existing weapons had likely been urgently deployed and repaired by the Phoenix Society for the airport platform.

A large number of survivor convoys waited on the airport platform for their turn on the ascension elevator. The plaza was filled with all sorts of survivors.

Large numbers of Iron Guard troops moved through the crowds, and transport vehicles continuously delivered various weapons and ammunition to support the outer defense line.

In just a moment, a strong smell of gunpowder filled everyone’s nostrils.

Chen Sixuan’s gaze swept around, and she said with concern, “The situation looks very tense. If the defense line falls, I don’t know where the people here will run.”

At this moment, Xu Jin, Shu Qin, Old Mo, and others had also parked their vehicles and walked over.

Xu Jin looked up at the ascension channel high in the sky and sighed, “Looking at this situation, the queue will probably last until the second half of the night.”

“So many jellyfish are coming. I don’t know if the Iron Guard can hold them off,” Shu Qin said.

“With the Iron Guard’s firepower, they should be able to, as long as it’s not the one we encountered at Daluo Mountain,” Old Mo waved his hand. “Don’t underestimate the army’s firepower. The most troublesome things are the internal infections from the night’s encroachment, and those big things.”

Lin Xian, however, was a bit curious. “Didn’t we receive a message from the Airport Guard before? How come we haven’t seen a single one?”

“The Guard? Those people are all in the inner harbor protecting that group of rich people now.”

A bold voice came through. The group looked towards the source of the sound and saw a tall, middle-aged man walking over. He had a square face, a full beard, a beer belly, and was wearing a thick fur coat. Several people followed him, and as they approached, their eyes continuously scrutinized the Infinity behind Lin Xian.

“What a strange configuration. An old heavy-duty gas turbine locomotive is pulling, but a Gemini 11R nuclear-powered electric locomotive is at the rear. What kind of operation is this?”

“Gas turbines are not suitable for escape at all. The energy supply isn’t guaranteed.”

“The armor plates look like good quality, like standard parts…”

“It seems to have armor but no weapons.”

“But they don’t seem to have many people. It’s impressive they managed to do this much.”

“Hey! Stop pointing fingers at others!” the middle-aged man interrupted, then his gaze swept to Lin Xian. He extended his hand, “Let’s get acquainted. Longshan One, Shi Diyuan.”

    Longshan One?

Lin Xian looked at the distant intercontinental-class heavy doomsday train that resembled a mobile city and understood. He reached out and shook his hand, saying with a serious expression, “Infinity, Lin Xian.”

“Infinity? Sounds very domineering.” Shi Diyuan nodded and got straight to the point. “Many people saw the big fire in the sky south of the city just now. The airport had already closed but specifically opened for you. I guess you must have run into some big creature.”

“Lots of big jellyfish!” Shasha chimed in at this moment. “Didn’t you guys see them?”

“There are plenty of big things in the dark of night,” a woman behind Shi Diyuan said. “We’ve encountered quite a few things in the sky…”

“You just said the Guard is in the inner harbor. What does that mean?” Lin Xian asked, puzzled.

“He’s probably talking about the Federation Investigation Team,” Ding Junyi said, walking over with her laptop. “I’ve already contacted them using the airport’s information system. This investigation team was specially dispatched from Star City headquarters to investigate the accident in Underground City No. 9. Dr. Zhao’s and my identity permissions are still in the system, so I looked at their mission log. This investigation team is also responsible for transferring some of the first-class citizens and senior management personnel who were stranded at the airport during the previous great migration. It has the nature of a rescue mission.”

Hearing Ding Junyi’s words, Lin Xian was a bit confused. Was the reason they were allowed to enter just now because Ding Junyi had contacted the Federation Investigation Team?

“So the former Federation government’s headquarters is now set up in Star City? Aren’t they afraid of being covered by the polar night?” KIKI asked.

Ding Junyi looked at her. “The Federation government’s doomsday policy has always been the Underground City Project. This has not changed.”

“What a bunch of damned old diehards!” Ever since KIKI learned about the self-destruct protocol of Underground City No. 9, she had shown extreme disgust for the former Federation government.

“Hahaha, they are indeed a bunch of old diehards. This investigation team arrived the day before yesterday. It looks like they’re preparing to take a few hundred people away on a large airship,” Shi Diyuan said with a disdainful expression. “This bunch of sons of bitches mobilized the Airport Guard to protect their flight port. They’d rather not fire a single shot to protect their first-class citizens than come to support the defense line. So now, the defense line is entirely manned by Iron Guard soldiers.”

“Yeah, the Iron Guard suffered heavy losses yesterday and were supposed to be resting and reorganizing at the airport. Now they’re shouldering the defense of the entire airport. They haven’t rested for days.”

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone frowned.

Many people knew that the Iron Guard had encountered a fierce battle at Daluo Mountain and suffered considerable personnel losses. Now, hearing about the actions of the Federation Investigation Team, everyone felt a certain degree of indignation.

Lin Xian asked, “Why does the Airport Guard have to obey their orders? Isn’t the current official government the Apocalypse Phoenix Society?”

“It’s not that simple. The Phoenix Society has only been established for a few months. There are still many unresolved issues between the old and new governments. The Airport Guard is a local city armed force, unlike the Star Force and the Iron Guard, whose command authority is much clearer,” Old Mo said, lifting his sunglasses as he also stepped forward.

Before he could finish, a group of heavily armed personnel drove over quickly in several shuttle carts. There seemed to be a few Federation government officials among them, and they soon arrived at the airport plaza.

The leader was a blonde woman in her early forties, wearing a black leather jacket and sunglasses. She walked with a swift and decisive gait, clearly a North American Caucasian.

When Ding Junyi saw the attire of the armed personnel, she immediately spoke.

“Airport Guard. Those should be the Federation officials.”

Lin Xian looked at the train behind him. Onboard, Zhao Yan and Xu Wen were still hiding in the car, afraid to get off. He said to Ding Junyi, “Since your people are here, let the two of them come down.”

Ding Junyi glanced at Lin Xian at this moment and said, “The investigation team might want to have some communication with you. No matter what they say, you can just refuse directly.”

Lin Xian let out a light laugh. “In a sense, the current survivors are all citizens abandoned by your Federation government. So, from a ‘sociological’ perspective, I am not under their jurisdiction. They should just mind their own business.”

Survivors were fleeing everywhere, and the social order had collapsed. Currently, only the Apocalypse Federation’s Phoenix Society was organizing survivor aid globally. Even the Star Force and the Iron Guard were being dispatched by the Phoenix Society. Under these circumstances, in Lin Xian’s eyes, the former Federation government was not much different from a civilian organization.

Ding Junyi completely missed the sarcasm in Lin Xian’s words. Her expression remained placid, her hands in her pockets, as she waited for the Federation officials to approach.
