Chapter 145: The Gate (Seeking Monthly Tickets!)
by SunflowerEveryone armed themselves and began to join the airport’s defense.
*BWOOM BWOOM!!!*
The fire from the 1130 close-in weapon system lit up the sky. Above, the giant silhouettes of jellyfish slowly contracted their bells as they approached. Zombies, piled up like mountains on the high walls, began to climb up one after another.
*Swoosh! Swoosh!*
Various pre-loaded missiles blasted towards the towering anomalies within the zombie horde. Giant humanoid monsters, black centipedes climbing along the tracks, and various other strange creatures Lin Xian had never seen before continuously appeared in the city streets. These anomalies attacked indiscriminately, devouring zombies while also assaulting the airport.
The bright airport searchlights seemed to make these anomalies somewhat fearful. They hid in the shadows and darkness, or unexpectedly climbed the high walls, taking the lives of several soldiers before retreating and lying low under the immense firepower.
*Boom, boom, boom!!*
As more survivors and metahumans joined the fight, the pressure on the Iron Guard on the defense line was relieved to some extent.
“Don’t you guys think there are way too many zombies and anomalies in this city?”
Lin Xian and the others were riding on the airport’s shuttle bus, rushing towards Entrance A.
KIKI frowned as she looked at the high defensive wall, ablaze with the light of battle. “It feels like all the monsters got some kind of notice and are all swarming over.”
“Could it be they have some kind of zombie leader, so they’re deliberately charging at us?” Lu Xingchen’s imagination was always quite wild.
“Didn’t they just say? That Corpse Herder. You might have actually hit the nail on the head,” Jiang Yun responded.
“By the way,” Lin Xian asked Jiang Yun, who was sitting in front, “I heard you encountered the Black Crow Four. How did you end up with the emergency team?”
Jiang Yun, wearing sunglasses, turned his head. “Big Beard’s convoy and I encountered that atmospheric jellyfish at Ping’a Lake. The Iron Guard was also there at the time…”
Lin Xian remembered something. “A few hours ago, Shu Qin, Xu Jin, and their teams and I took out that Black Crow Four.”
“Is that so? Well done. I owe you one.”
Jiang Yun gave a faint smile, but his expression was somewhat desolate. He said softly, “This whole journey has been full of danger. Not everyone is lucky.”
…
Lin Xian said nothing. He remembered that Jiang Yun and that young subordinate must have had a good relationship, and he couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Beside him, Shasha was busy stuffing shells into her grenade launcher. She was carrying a large backpack, filled with all the ammunition Lin Xian had prepared for her.
Originally, Lin Xian had made her a sturdy, bulletproof backpack to carry ammunition, but it was too heavy. The little girl couldn’t even stand up straight with it…
So he planned to tailor-make a set of external armor for Shasha once he could build it. Shasha had no metahuman abilities and was young; he was always a little worried about her going in and out of battlefields. Fortunately, she had Dalou by her side to look after her.
Wei Kexue, a lean middle-aged man, had his head buried in his computer the whole time, operating something. He then said nervously, “This is not good. Those monsters are so smart. It seems they’re all starting to gather at Entrance A.”
His words seemed to confirm Lu Xingchen’s joke, which made it sound all the more bizarre.
*Bang, bang, bang!!*
*Boom, boom, boom!!!*
The deafening sound of guns and cannons intensified. The shuttle buses gradually approached Entrance A, which was on the verge of falling.
Several hundred Iron Guard soldiers formed layers of encirclement. The massive heavy gate was open by a gap of about two meters, and countless zombies were swarming in. The machine guns and cannons on the high walls continuously fired at the larger anomalies outside. More and more zombie corpses piled up, blocking the gate.
“Dalou, Shasha, you’re responsible for covering fire from a distance. KIKI and that Lu guy, help me clear a path later!”
Before they even arrived, Lin Xian began to give out orders.
“If we don’t close the gate, this momentum can’t be stopped,” Jiang Yun said in a deep voice. “Captain Lin, let me clear a path for you first.”
After speaking, he took out his walkie-talkie and shouted, “Huiyan!”
“Coming.” The sound of a motorcycle engine approached rapidly. The woman in the leather suit from Jiang Yun’s team suddenly sped up from behind. *Swish, swish, swish.* From the motorcycle, several small guided missiles flew out, blasting the congested gap in the gate. Then, the woman named Ren Huiyan reached out and grabbed the air, as if catching some transparent object, and then threw it forcefully towards the gate!
*BWOOM!!*
An extremely powerful pressure wave exploded, sending countless pieces of flesh and blood flying.
“We’ll handle the outside!” Jiang Yun lifted his sunglasses, gave Lin Xian a nod, and then jumped directly off the shuttle bus. A hurricane swept up, and his entire body rose into the air.
“Wind-type!” Lu Xingchen’s eyes burned. “Not bad, not bad. The new world is indeed full of talents. This ability can fuel my fire, a perfect match for me!”
“Did you fall in love with him?” KIKI rolled her eyes at him.
“That’s not the right way to put it. In this life, a true confidant is hard to find…”
“Lu Xingchen!” Lin Xian directly interrupted his grand speech, pointing to the high wall. “Get up there. Burn as many as you can.”
“As you wish!”
The top priority was to relieve the pressure. If more and more zombies gathered outside, not only would the gate not close, but it might be forced open completely. Then it would be impossible to close it again.
“Two of the gate’s power units are damaged, and one of the steel cables is stuck!” Wei Kexue said anxiously, holding his computer.
“I know. Shut down all the gate’s power units and restart them.”
“What?! If we shut them down, the gate will be pushed open immediately!!”
“It won’t.”
The shuttle bus stopped, and everyone got off. Lin Xian pointed to KIKI and Lu Xingchen beside him. “Wait for the right moment. Give them a few seconds.”
“I… I understand.” Wei Kexue’s face was filled with alarm, and he nodded repeatedly.
KIKI clapped her hands, her eyes shining, and her whole body slowly levitated into the air.
Many of the surrounding survivors and Iron Guard soldiers were shocked to see this.
*What’s going on today? Why can so many metahumans fly?*
*Screeech!!!*
A red centipede, braving the hail of bullets, squeezed a section of its body through the gate opening. Its dense, numerous legs were exposed, a sight that made one’s scalp crawl.
When KIKI and Lin Xian saw this giant insect, they finally understood that they had seen more than just one of these anomalies. Even the white giant monster, they now saw several figures of it within the zombie army.
“This thing again!”
The moment KIKI saw this red insect, she was filled with anger. She directly raised her hand and used her ability, pinching the giant red insect, and then twisted her wrist.
A huge twisting force immediately contorted the red centipede like a pretzel.
*Screeech!!*
The giant insect opened its mouthparts wide and let out a piercing shriek. Lu Xingchen, standing closest below, almost had his eardrums shattered.
He directly raised his hand, and a thin pillar of white flame shot straight into the giant insect’s mouthparts, instantly generating intense heat. Black smoke billowed out, and in just a moment, the insect’s mouth and belly were scorched, unable to make another sound.
Just then, another crimson human skeleton suddenly emerged from the zombie horde, opened its giant mouth, and sprayed a wave of flames at the defending Iron Guard soldiers inside!
“Watch out for the monster’s flame breath!”
A soldier shouted urgently, but in the next instant, the massive flames and wave of blood instantly engulfed a dozen soldiers and survivors.
“Ah!!”
Piercing screams rose and fell, and a foul, smoky stench spread everywhere.
*Rat-a-tat-tat!*
An Iron Guard 3 mech charged forward, braving the flames. The machine gun in its hand frantically unleashed a metal storm, blasting away half of the human skeleton’s torso.
*Screeech!!*
Before everyone could recover from the attack of this behemoth, two long red antennae suddenly appeared on the high wall. Another giant red centipede, its hundreds of legs writhing, suddenly charged into the defensive formation, instantly carving a bloody path.
*Rat-a-tat-tat!!!*
The Iron Guard soldiers frantically fired back. “Be careful!!”
“It’s an anomaly!”
*Bang!*
A huge wind blade struck, instantly cutting off half of the red centipede, its upper body falling down.
Jiang Yun’s eyes were sharp. He shouted, “There’s more than one! Look below!”
“The monster is breathing fire again! Everyone, dodge!” The human skeleton below, with half its torso, was now starting to squeeze through the gate gap. It raised its skull, preparing to breathe fire again in the face of the hail of bullets.
The Iron Guard soldiers all retreated, their bullets frantically bombarding the human skeleton, tearing off its limbs, but the crimson glow in its mouth only grew stronger as it continued to breathe fire!
Seeing this, Lu Xingchen’s aura surged.
“You bastard! How dare you breathe fire in front of the God of Fire!”
