Chapter Index

A faint, unfamiliar sound suddenly ringing out in the quiet space instantly made the two’s expressions change, their gazes darting around.

Because this level was so vast, almost entirely composed of various display racks and corridors like a giant museum, the sound echoed in the empty space, making it impossible to pinpoint the direction at once.

Lin Xian’s nerves tensed. “We are definitely not the only two people in this place!”

KIKI immediately grew nervous. She quickly picked up the mobile terminal, checked the route, then looked around fearfully and urged Lin Xian, “Let’s go, quick. After this next gallery, it’s the gene cryo-zone.”

Lin Xian didn’t hesitate, raising his knife and moving forward. He gripped the electric knife tightly in his hand, his focus raised to the absolute limit.

    Creak…

The sound came again, seemingly from behind a few display racks to their side, keeping parallel to them.

    Thump, thump.

Lin Xian and KIKI started to jog, the beams of their tactical flashlights swaying constantly in the darkness, illuminating the black floor ahead.

    Creak…

The dragging sound continued. Lin Xian was secretly alarmed because he had clearly run a great distance, but the sound seemed to stick to the display racks not far away, always appearing on his left side at just the right time.

Just as Lin Xian and KIKI turned into a long gallery, something strange began to happen. Unsure if it was the air or a visual issue, Lin Xian noticed their flashlight beams starting to dim, the darkness ahead swallowing their vision like thick ink.

At the same time, the creaking, dragging sound appeared from the ground not far behind them.

    Creak…

    “Ah! Lin Xian.”

The sound scared KIKI, and she let out a soft cry. Because she wasn’t running as fast as Lin Xian, he directly reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her to run forward quickly.

The sound of running echoed in the huge gallery with an empty thudding. KIKI’s heart raced, one hand holding onto Lin Xian’s, the other tightly clutching the mobile terminal.

At this moment, the strange dragging sound rang out again, and this time, it felt like it was almost right behind her head.

KIKI jumped in fright. As a reflex, she let go of Lin Xian’s hand and directly used her ability, waving behind her!

    Voom!

An invisible force surged, and a shockwave rippled out.

A dull thud sounded, as if something invisible had been sent flying by her!

“Lin Xian, there’s something behind us!”

    “I know!”

Lin Xian ran at top speed, but KIKI clearly couldn’t keep up. She was different from Lin Xian; KIKI’s ability didn’t seem to enhance her physical fitness, unlike Lin Xian who had gained attribute boosts, giving him a stronger physique than an ordinary person.

Running at full speed now almost left KIKI breathless.

    Thump thump thump.

As the two passed through the long gallery, a cryo-chamber area shimmering with a faint blue light appeared ahead. White, cold air flowed through the passage, looking like mist, making it impossible to even see the road.

“What’s going on? Didn’t the power already go out?”

“Cryo-chambers are usually equipped with independent emergency power sources, but from the looks of it, a chamber probably has a leak.”

Lin Xian looked at the Geiger counter in his hand as he ran. He and KIKI were both wearing gas masks, and they had no other protection besides that.

    “Let’s go through here!”

    KIKI shouted.

After rushing into the cryo-chamber passage, the cold white mist began to submerge them, and the view ahead became even blurrier. Lin Xian held his knife horizontally in front of him, his other hand tightly holding KIKI’s.

    “Hello.”

In an instant, a voice suddenly came from ahead. It sounded like a little girl’s, but when Lin Xian and KIKI heard it, they immediately felt their hair stand on end.

Not just because the voice was so sudden, but also because they could tell the intonation was very stiff.

    To put it simply.

    It didn’t sound very human.

    “Who’s talking?!”

“Be careful.” Lin Xian, who was running in front, reacted instinctively, suddenly pulling KIKI into a narrow passage of a cryo-chamber to the side.

    Whoosh!

In the passage the two had just dodged through, something seemed to roll past.

    “Hel! Lo!”

The strange voice sounded again, this time a bit deeper, as if it was trying its best to sound ‘normal’. But the more it tried, the more terrifying the voice sounded!

“Over there!” KIKI panted heavily, pointing to the passage entrance in the distance, the direction they had just come from.

Lin Xian looked over and was shocked to find the white, cold mist outside the passage rapidly flowing to both sides, as if something was approaching in the mist.

    And it was not small!

    An anomaly!

Lin Xian’s first reaction was that this size was definitely not a zombie, and it probably wasn’t a human anomaly either.

    Thump thump thump~

Lin Xian quickly adjusted his breathing, pulling KIKI and moving rapidly.

“This thing seems to be following us.”

“Quick, it’s just ahead,” KIKI said anxiously.

The two rushed out of a gene cryobank area and into a corridor. However, at this moment, the strange voice sounded again.

    “He!!! Llo!!!”

The voice became extremely sharp, deliberately imitating a human.

Lin Xian followed the direction of the sound and looked back. The beam of his tactical flashlight simultaneously shone on the entrance of the cryobank, which was emitting a fluorescent glow.

At this moment, in that direction, a black shadow shaped like a human skeleton appeared.

It was running quickly towards them!

    “Be careful!”

Lin Xian violently pulled KIKI behind him. His Mechanical Heart activated, and he quickly created a square steel frame, erecting it in the middle of the corridor, completely blocking the space.

    Clang! Screech!

The human skeleton in the black shadow, its form unclear, crashed head-on into the frame Lin Xian had created. The steel frame instantly deformed, and a shower of sparks erupted as it scraped against the wall. This sudden obstacle hindered the monster in the darkness. Just as Lin Xian was about to use this gap to escape, in the darkness, a blood-red skull suddenly began to glow slowly.

The giant skull’s eyes and massive mouth seemed to ignite with burning flames. In an instant, the image of a red human skeleton over three meters tall and covered in bone spikes appeared in their sight.

    Argh!!

A sharp roar pierced their eardrums. The red human skeleton suddenly spewed a white flame accompanied by a wave of blood from its mouth. A scorching, fishy smell instantly swept through the entire corridor.

    “Spitting fire?!”

Lin Xian’s expression changed in shock, and he reacted immediately.

    Ice Shield!

    Boom!

The wave of flames instantly illuminated the entire corridor. KIKI leaned against Lin Xian’s back and at the same time raised her hand to use her telekinesis to resist. The invisible force blocked the scorching heat. Countless blood splatters dyed the corridor red, forming a spray zone fanning out to the sides from where Lin Xian stood.

Lin Xian’s ice shield instantly vaporized, and even the steel wall behind it was burned red. If Kiki hadn’t intervened to block it, his steel wall would probably have been burned through!

“What the hell is this thing?”

    “How can an anomaly talk!!”

“Let’s go!” KIKI’s face turned anxious. She reached up, grabbed a huge chandelier on the corridor ceiling, and pulled it down abruptly.

    Clang!

The metal chandelier fell, crashing onto the blood-red skull, pinning the red human skeleton against the steel frame Lin Xian had made. The steel frame bent with a groan and collapsed to the ground, buried under the metal chandelier and a pile of steel frames.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Lin Xian pulled KIKI and rushed out of the corridor. Under the flashlight’s beam, a narrow maintenance passage appeared ahead.
