    Chapter 68: Changes in Promotion

“The utilization of spiritual energy is stronger and more diverse; it doesn’t have to be in the form of sharp stings and there’s more leeway.”

“Mystical tool related abilities are integrated into one, probably because their compatibility is similar?” Su Chen secretly pondered. Indeed, as he expected, the control quantity +1, and he just happened to gain control over the [Green Scale Chainmail].

As for the last professional ability, he couldn’t quite figure it out.

He had long known that the professional abilities acquired by Arcane Apprentice varied from person to person, depending on what they experienced in the Whispering Trial.

But this explanation still surprised him.

    “Steal?”

He recalled the four winged creatures again.

    “Is it really a Guiding?”

Rubbing his hands, Su Chen was eager to try. With just a thought, his spiritual energy surged out.

The air in front of him suddenly crackled, a pale red lightning bolt appeared out of thin air, and a burning smell permeated the air.

Su Chen’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly dissipated it. This ability was even more powerful than he expected. Just a moment of charging depleted nearly a tenth of his spiritual energy.

“I can probably only use it once or twice, but the power must be considerable.” Su Chen was faintly surprised and dared not try again. Instead, he prepared to bring the [Green Scale Chainmail] under his control.

After making his choice, his spiritual energy flowed out, gradually permeating the armor that covered his entire body.

Immediately, he felt as if it were an extension of his arm. Peeling back his clothes, he saw the scales begin to flow, emitting a crisp clang as if metal was striking stone, even gathering in one place, layer upon layer.

The [Green Scale Chainmail] was essentially just a Tier 2 item, but it was heavily engineered. Automatic donning was already its limit, and this kind of targeted defense was impossible for it to achieve on its own.

But Su Chen, with the help of his control, could easily do it. Even in battle, with [Dual-Tasking], he could adjust and strengthen its defense.

“Multiple layers of scales stacked, the defensive level is comparable to Tier 3.” Su Chen couldn’t help but think, “And it can be further strengthened.”

At this thought, azure wind currents gathered and gradually attached to the Green Scale Chainmail. Ripple-like patterns appeared on the surface of the scales, with each scale absorbing wind elements.

The azure scales became even deeper, and light azure streams seeped from the crevices. These light streams interwove on the armor’s surface, flickering on and off.

“The Wind Barrier is directly stacked on the Green Scale Chainmail, further enhancing its defensive strength.” Su Chen patted the scaled armor, “No wonder everyone pursues top-tier professions.”

He once again felt the power of a top-tier profession. Even at Tier 1, the Mysterious Tool Master still brought him powerful enhancements.

Both of his Tier 2 professions had the potential for imminent transformation.

“Hah…” Su Chen exhaled, rubbing his brows. The promotion had just ended, his spiritual energy hadn’t stabilized, and after a series of ability tests, he was also a bit fatigued.

“Now, Tier 2 meditation potions will have to be put on the agenda, as well as meditation methods. Old Sun probably can’t handle this.”

Su Chen sighed and simply went out to eat with Zhang Hengyu.

Zhang Hengyu looked distraught, and when he saw Su Chen finally resting again, visible excitement appeared in his eyes.

It was too much. He had never seen such a driven person!

The next day, when Fatty Sun came to deliver the weekly allocation of [Mist Nightmare Potion], Su Chen asked about Pan Yu.

Fatty Sun pondered, “You mean Pan Yu’s matter? It’s still under investigation. Many people suspect his disappearance is related to the Mysterious God Cult. The City Lord specially formed an investigation team to see if they can find any leads.”

When he heard Su Chen say that the investigation team had already come to him, Fatty Sun was furious and exclaimed, “Are they sick? Why are they investigating you?”

“Others can’t distinguish, but can’t Qin Cheng distinguish either?”

“It’s routine, routine.” Su Chen, on the other hand, comforted Fatty Sun.

Fatty Sun grumbled, saying he would definitely settle scores with Qin Cheng when he went back.

“Those guys must be pretty powerful, otherwise, they wouldn’t have been chosen by the City Lord,” Su Chen said casually.

“I’ve heard of Zhou Mingguang. He’s highly regarded by the City Lord, steady and composed. He’s a Tier 2 Advanced [Stonewall Guard], and his professional progress is already in the latter half, so he might have a chance to become a Tier 3 professional.” Sun Tai mused:

“As for Yu Xuan, he’s a very low-key person, with a very good reputation for being fair and just. He’s a Tier 2 Advanced [Frost emissary], but his professional progress might not be too high.”

“As for Qin Cheng?” Sun Tai curled his lip, “It’s only because Pan Yu was his subordinate; otherwise, the Supervision Department wouldn’t even involve him.”

“I see.” Su Chen seemed to be deep in thought.

After seeing Fatty Sun off, he opened the metal box and couldn’t help but laugh, “Brother Sun, you’re truly my brother.”

The original allocation of three tubes of Mist Nightmare Potion had inexplicably become four.

This stuff had no regular market in Southwind. Not to mention the black market, even within the Supervision Department, if it circulated secretly, it would cost five or six thousand gold. With an extra portion, Fatty Sun would definitely feel the pinch.

…By evening, a week after the joint investigation team’s last visit, Su Chen was surprised that Yu Xuan came to find him again.

    “Surprised?”

Yu Xuan knocked on the door, smiling as he looked at Su Chen, and walked in uninvited.

Su Chen narrowed his eyes and closed the door.

“Tsk tsk, this place is nice,” Yu Xuan said, looking around the room, impressed. “Counting the time, from a vagrant eating relief food to the deputy section chief of the patrol division of the Supervision Department, it doesn’t seem like many months have passed.”

“Such a life, you probably never even dared to dream of it before.”

Su Chen looked at the other party’s confident appearance, his expression unchanged.

The other party had come openly and was not afraid of any potential surveillance personnel outside.

“Surprisingly, the Faceless Ghost would extend their reach here…” Yu Xuan’s face gradually darkened, his voice growing cold, “Hand over what you took, otherwise, the identity you’ve worked so hard to build will be utterly destroyed.”

    Faceless Ghost?

They didn’t consider me a Heituo Cultist? Do they know I’m disguised?

From Yu Xuan’s tone, Heituo and the Faceless Ghost seemed to be on the same level, both being Guiding. Are there conflicts within the Guiding cult?

Su Chen was secretly surprised, but he remained silent, waiting to hear what else the other party would say.

“You have ambitious plans, why meddle in our affairs?” Yu Xuan, seeing his silence, sneered, “To send you to Yuan Chenyang’s side, you actually used us as a stepping stone.”

    “You underestimate us too much.”

Su Chen thought it over and finally gave a common response: “What do you want?”

“Hand over the power of our Lord that you devoured, as well as the space crystal you took, and finally, do us a small favor,” Yu Xuan said in a deep voice.

They really had me cornered. Su Chen wasn’t surprised by the first two demands.

    “What favor?” he pressed.

“Corrupt Yuan Chenyang.” His tone was cold: “Zhou Xian is no longer useful, you must compensate us with a chess piece.”

“Too difficult.” Su Chen shook his head.

“That’s your problem. If you don’t agree, then it’s a fight to the death. Your identity as a Guiding believer won’t be protected, and I’ll still profit from trading you for a piece.”

Yu Xuan revealed a strange smile, sinisterly saying, “For the sake of infiltration, you should only be a low-level believer, retaining a considerable degree of independent thought.”

“Think about your current life and consider it carefully.”

Yu Xuan didn’t ask for an immediate answer. He patted Su Chen’s shoulder and left directly, as if he were in his own home.

“Really…” Su Chen looked at his left shoulder and murmured, “I still need a few more fellow Daoists on the path of hunting.”

Under the dark night sky, Su Chen darted out his window, using familiar movements, and pulled out his binoculars. The blurry silhouette drifted far away with the wind.

Su Chen had left a faint mental trace on Yu Xuan, a subtle application of spiritual energy after his promotion.

It allowed him to vaguely detect the target’s location, though only within a range of three to four hundred meters, making tracking much more flexible.

“It’s in the direction of the Outer District again. Could he be going to report?” Su Chen surmised to himself, following at a distance. He found that Yu Xuan didn’t go home, but instead took some secluded paths, finally arriving near a factory.

“Factory district…” Su Chen glanced around. This area was extremely vast and still brightly lit.

“Is he here to report? To whom? Zhou Xian? Or others from the Mysterious God Cult?” A string of questions popped into Su Chen’s mind. A rash attack was definitely out of the question.

Stick to the old method: call for backup!

Su Chen quietly contacted Fatty Sun, claiming he had received another tip.

Old Sun was very excited, but Su Chen very cautiously requested that Du Jingming must lead the team.

Du Jingming was one of the deputy directors of the Supervision Department, Du Yu’s father, and also a Tier 3 professional.

However, he was a flawed Tier 3. He was not young, and it was impossible for him to complete all the promotion requirements, so he had to risk forcefully taking the job, barely succeeding.

The probability of failure for a forced job placement is very high. Even if successful, one cannot awaken professional abilities, and professional progress will stagnate, with no further path, but he is still a Tier 3 professional after all.

Fatty Sun became much more cautious on the phone, repeatedly confirming the situation.

Su Chen was vague, not mentioning that Zhou Xian might be there, only saying that it was information from his vagrant friends.

After waiting two or three hours, Su Chen saw the patrol airship descend in the distance. Compared to the last time, there were significantly more people.
