Chapter 29: Hu Xiang: Encountering a Pervert

The two walked to the edge of the camp. Hu Xiang pulled out a tin box, took out a slender cigarette wrapped in brownish-gray paper.

Seeing Su Chen shake his head, he put it into his own mouth, lit it with his thumb, took a deep puff, and the spark grew brighter.

After exhaling a smoke ring, he slowly said, “Zhou Zong’s father is Zhou Xian, the director of internal affairs. We’re in big trouble.”

“He should be looking for the Azure-scaled Lion,” Su Chen frowned.

Hu Xiang helplessly said, “He won’t find the Azure-scaled Lion, so he’ll only come after us.”

“He’ll resent us for not acting sooner, for not protecting his son.”

“At the time, I was fighting the leader, so I had a reasonable excuse. But you and Zhou Zong had a conflict, and he won’t easily let you go. Even if you didn’t secretly make a move, so what? People like them don’t care about evidence.”

Su Chen’s expression flickered, but he didn’t dwell on the topic. “Who told you to make a move?”

Hu Xiang’s movements stiffened. The cigarette in his mouth burned and wavered, as if he hadn’t expected Su Chen to ask so directly.

Su Chen turned his head to look over, “Silence, is that your explanation?”

“Qi Chuan…” Hu Xiang’s lips moved, spitting out a name.

“Ah… so it’s the victim.” Su Chen wasn’t too surprised. After a thought, he asked, “What was the price for my life?”

“The clue to the Mist Nightmare Pearl…”

“Just a clue?” Su Chen was astonished.

“This clue is very important to me, it might wake my wife,” Hu Xiang extinguished the cigarette in his hand, his eyes filled with recollection.

“So devoted?” Su Chen glanced at him with surprise, then asked, “Why were you taking special care of me earlier?”

Hu Xiang looked somewhat unnatural, “Perhaps, guilt.”

“Guilt?” Su Chen grinned. This answer was truly beyond his expectation. “I thought it would be something like making me lower my guard.”

“Before, I didn’t do these kinds of things…” Hu Xiang defended. Perhaps, having confirmed Qi Chuan’s failure, he felt less burdened.

“I don’t care…” Su Chen interrupted, “I don’t want to know your emotional journey, and you don’t need to tell me.”

Hu Xiang smiled bitterly, “Yes, no matter what, I was involved. It’s normal for you to resent me.”

“Resentment?” Su Chen looked at him strangely. “Who said I resent you?”

“You took money from someone to solve their problems, I can understand that,” Su Chen patiently explained, “If someone offered me an irresistible price, I would also not hesitate to act against you.”

Hu Xiang was dumbfounded. Is the thinking of vagrants all so sharp?

“It’s just that you failed, so you have to pay the debt,” Su Chen said with a smile.

Hu Xiang’s thoughts were in disarray. He tentatively said, “What if I don’t acknowledge it?”

Su Chen looked at him with a smile, “Then for the rest of my life, as long as I’m alive, I’ll be watching your wife.”

Hu Xiang’s heart trembled, and he felt a chill.

Su Chen smiled, “Of course, you still have a chance. Kill me now.”

Hu Xiang instinctively glanced at the large group of people not far behind him. People were still occasionally looking over, and Bai Fengxi was staring intently.

Hu Xiang smiled bitterly and shook his head, “Little brother, don’t mess with me anymore.”

Hu Xiang completely admitted defeat. This attempted setup had already made him uneasy.

“Let’s go, it should be mostly handled now…” The patrol team’s efficiency was quick. The bodies were piled to the side, and the chaotic camp became orderly again.

Seeing Su Chen and the other return, everyone’s expressions were still complex. The small mountain of bodies piled nearby constantly reminded them that everything that had just happened was not a dream.

“Brother Su Chen, is this your tent…” Shen Ying’er came over, holding a yellowish-brown tent in her arms, her chest slightly pushed out. She had been hiding somewhere just now.

Her clothes were a bit tattered, and her eyes were slightly red, looking pitifully at Su Chen.

“If you want it, it’s yours,” Su Chen said casually.

“No, I…” Shen Ying’er watched Su Chen walk straight past, regretting why she hadn’t spent more time bonding with him before.

“How do you plan to deal with these bodies?” Hu Xiang asked from the side. “These are your spoils of war. Normally, 50% of the sales price goes to you.”

He then explained, “Because the patrol team needs to handle, package, and carry these things, a portion needs to be allocated.”

This was an unwritten rule, and Su Chen didn’t say anything, nodding, “You can handle it.”

“How about this…” Hu Xiang thought for a moment, then added, “The number of bodies is quite large this time, and we’re short-handed. Let’s use these things as ingredients first, and then I’ll calculate the value for you when we get back.”

“Okay.” The two agreed. The students who were bandaging and recuperating couldn’t help but look on with envy.

Hu Xiang usually scolded them and said unpleasant things, but this was the first time they heard him speak in such a consultative tone.

Hu Xiang said a few more words, this time not scolding the students for their chaotic performance in battle, but rather comforting and encouraging them, which made many people feel a little better.

“Today, students don’t need to stand watch. Everyone go rest. The watch area will be halved, and I will patrol,” Hu Xiang finally ordered.

He was very capable. The camp was nearly restored within half an hour after the battle. The students went to rest, and soft whimpers could be heard from many tents.

The recent battle had made Su Chen a bit tired. He asked for a tent from logistics, and after setting it up, he still couldn’t sleep.

He couldn’t fully relax his guard against Hu Xiang.

In the latter half of the night, the camp was silent. A figure quietly emerged from a tent and walked to a corner of the camp, where there was a meticulously wrapped corpse.

    Sizzle…

He carefully unzipped the body bag, and Zhou Zong, with only half a head remaining, stared with his single eye.

He fumbled on the corpse, his movements hasty, “Where is it, where is it?”

“Tang Chen, what are you doing?” A voice suddenly came from behind.

The figure fumbling with the corpse on the ground suddenly stiffened, then carefully turned around, “Ca-captain, weren’t you on patrol outside?”

“I asked, what are you doing?” Hu Xiang’s tone was icy.

“I, I heard some noise here, so I came to check…” Tang Chen’s throat moved, and he explained softly.

“What kind of noise can a corpse make?” Hu Xiang’s face was cold. He threw out a pair of handcuffs, “Tie yourself up.”

Tang Chen’s expression changed, and he quickly said, “Captain, I really just came to take a look.”

“Don’t make me do it.” Hu Xiang took a step forward, and the air around him began to heat up.

Tang Chen had no choice but to pick up the handcuffs from the ground and clasp them onto his wrists. The surface of the handcuffs glowed with electromagnetic light, and with a click, they latched together.
