Chapter Index

The western suburbs of the city.

A streak of fire shot through the night, streaked across the empty street, and stopped at the entrance of the Star fast food restaurant across from the Maple Forest Hotel.

Shen Ye got off the car and looked into the fast food restaurant.

    Strange.

There was no one else in the fast food restaurant.

Only a five or six-year-old girl sat in the corner, carrying a large backpack.

Hearing the motorcycle, she looked up at Shen Ye.

Shen Ye waved at the little girl.

The little girl ran straight out of the fast food restaurant, ran all the way to him, and looked at him awkwardly.

She had a large red earphone around her neck, and the two earcups of the earphone were patterned with eyeball-like designs.

A Chinese reading comprehension question was playing on the headphones.

    “Did you call me?”

    Shen Ye asked.

“It was me—have you seen my mom? I can’t reach her.” The little girl said anxiously.

The little girl was wearing a red school uniform, patched up everywhere, thin, with dry, yellow hair, looking a little malnourished.

—As if a gust of wind could blow her away.

Shen Ye looked at her for a few moments, then looked at the Maple Forest Hotel across the street.

The hotel was a building with dozens of floors, and at this moment, against the backdrop of the night, it looked like a monster that could devour people at any moment.

“I’ll go find your mom right away. By the way, have you called the police?”

“The call went through, but no one answered.”

    “I’ll call.”

Shen Ye quickly dialed the emergency number.

    Beep—beep—

The phone rang for a full thirty seconds, but no one answered.

    …How could this be?

Shen Ye was a little bewildered.

“Is my mom still alive? Can you help me find her?” The little girl bit her lip, looking up at Shen Ye.

Shen Ye said, “Where’s your dad?”

“He passed away a long time ago, it’s just my mom and me.” The little girl said.

“Alright, I’ll send you to a safe place first. When I find your mom, I’ll contact you.” Shen Ye said.

“What place?” The little girl asked.

“Ghostfire, take her to the Human Martial Arts Building, then come back for me.” Shen Ye said.

A soft voice sounded from the motorcycle: “Recalculating route, route confirmed. Children under 12, please fasten your seatbelts. We’re about to depart.”

Shen Ye put the little girl on the motorcycle.

“I want to see my mom.” The little girl stared at him and said.

“I’m also looking for her.” Shen Ye said.

“Her room number is 707, but I can’t reach her, so I’m afraid to go.” The little girl said.

“Okay, I’ll find her, and then we’ll come to you together.” Shen Ye said.

“I’m scared.” The little girl started to cry.

Shen Ye patted her back and said gently:

“Don’t be afraid. The place I’m sending you to is very safe. We’ll take you to dinner later.”

—It’s best to calm her down and get her to leave here obediently.

Life is more important than anything else.

The little girl rubbed her eyes, scrutinized him very carefully, and remained silent for a long time.

Shen Ye saw that her emotions had stabilized, and he let out a sigh of relief, patting the motorcycle.

“Returning to your side in 5 minutes and 39 seconds.” The motorcycle said.

“I’ll go to the hotel across the street, and you’ll find me there.” Shen Ye said.

“Returning to your side in 5 minutes and 40 seconds.” The motorcycle said.

    “Go!”

The motorcycle started and quickly took the little girl away from this block.

Shen Ye continued to stare at the Maple Forest Hotel.

“It’s a complete waste of time—this little girl has no stake in you, doesn’t even know you, and is very likely to be a burden. I don’t understand why you’re helping her.”

    Big Skeleton said.

“Her mother is innocent; she’s suffering because of me.” Shen Ye said.

“Hmph, being soft-hearted won’t let you achieve great things.” Big Skeleton said.

    Boom—

A crash came from the Maple Forest Hotel, and a faint, sharp shout.

Xiao Mengyu was fighting that Skinner!

    —Can’t wait any longer.

But everything else was very strange.

Ever since entering this block, he had felt an indescribable silence.

There were no cars driving on the street.

There were no pedestrians on the road.

All the shops were lit up, but there was no one inside.

This place was like a ghost realm.

    Rustle…

In the night sky, cold rain fell, continuously hitting the ground, making a rubbing sound.

    Boom—

    Another huge crash.

Whether it was an illusion or something else, Shen Ye always felt that the hotel seemed to have become darker.

—It had completely transformed into a dark church exuding an ominous aura.

The longer he looked, the more intense the unease in his heart became.

    But he had to go.

    So many people died.

The threat of assassination was still not lifted.

If he didn’t investigate clearly today, and let it lurk in the shadows, would he have to live in fear forever?

—The truth was right before him!

Shen Ye silenced his phone, put it in his pocket, then crossed the street and walked straight into the hotel lobby.

There were people in the lobby though.

Several hotel staff stood in the lobby, all looking at Shen Ye.

    “Hello, are you checking in?”

A middle-aged woman with a “Manager” tag on her chest smiled appropriately.

Shen Ye was about to speak, but Big Skeleton’s voice sounded in his ear:

“Be careful, there are no living people here.”

When it came to life and death, Shen Ye naturally trusted the words of this undead creature.

He flipped his hand and took out Night Curtain, then immediately asked:

“How did you die? Why can you still stand here?”

    —”Gloom Whisper” activated!

The middle-aged woman maintained her smile and explained, “To live more comfortably, the master killed us all, strung us together with special threads, controlled our souls with magic, and commanded us to perform various actions.”

“Is that so?” Shen Ye asked the others.

    The corpses all nodded.

“Why aren’t you attacking me?” Shen Ye asked.

“We were set to provide service to guests with all our might. The master encountered a powerful enemy and was busy fighting, so she didn’t give us new instructions.” The middle-aged woman said.

“Besides you, how many others died here?” he asked.

“All of them.” The middle-aged woman said.

    “All of them that means?”

“Everyone in this block, everyone in this area, all died here.”

    Shen Ye was stunned.

Now he knew where that ominous feeling had come from.

The sounds of fighting upstairs grew more intense; he could even hear Xiao Mengyu’s soft exclamations.

The sounds of battle had moved all the way to the top floor.

    Good, now’s the time!

Shen Ye rushed up the stairs, climbed to the seventh floor in one breath, and stood at the door of room number 707.

No matter how reluctant he was—

    He pushed the door hard.

The lock broke directly, and the door opened, revealing the scene inside the room.

The floor was covered with corpses, the walls were also covered with corpses, and the ceiling was full of corpses nailed by steel wires.

A woman’s body lay on the carpet in the center of the room.

Her body was missing a part, but her face was somewhat familiar to Shen Ye.

    Shen Ye’s heart gradually sank.

    Oh no…

He stepped over body after body, came to the woman, and whispered:

    “Do you know me?”

The woman opened her eyes, looked at him, and said, “Shen Ye, I saw you getting haunted when I was on duty.”

Shen Ye suddenly felt like he wanted to escape.

But he didn’t move in the end; he just slowly closed his eyes and then opened them again.

“I’m sorry, you died because of me.”

    He heard himself say.

The woman’s voice, however, was very flat: “I’m already dead, so these things don’t matter as much. Besides, it’s not your fault. If you’re willing—”

    “Please avenge us.”

    Revenge…

Shen Ye looked at the room full of corpses, then thought of what the manager in the lobby had said.

“Everyone in this block, everyone in this area, all died here.”

How many people did that guy kill?

“Can you sense other bodies?” he asked.

“That’s right, all the other rooms are like this one, and even more densely packed with corpses.” Big Skeleton said.

Shen Ye looked back at the woman, and whispered:

“Don’t worry, revenge must be had, and… your daughter…”

“I will ensure her healthy growth.”

“All her future expenses will be covered by me.”

    “Rest in peace.”

The female corpse listened silently, a look of confusion suddenly appearing on her face.

But there was no time to continue.

    The ground shook.

The hotel building was struck by an irresistible force, and half of the building was directly blown away.

    “Who!”

A voice of shock and anger came from the rooftop.

The Big Skeleton quickly said, “Of the two battling, one’s life force is rapidly diminishing and is falling towards us. They’re about to pass outside the window.”

    Shen Ye’s expression changed.

It was a man’s voice from the rooftop.

So the one falling was naturally the other party in the battle.

    Xiao Mengyu!

He rushed to the window, crashed through it, and looked around in mid-air.

Sure enough, a sword-wielding woman was falling from the sky.

Her body was covered in dense, horrifying wounds, and blood continuously gushed out.

Xiao Mengyu’s cold gaze swept over, and when she saw it was Shen Ye, she was clearly startled, then relaxed.

“Her life force is very weak.”

    Big Skeleton said.

    “What?” Shen Ye was aghast.

He caught Xiao Mengyu in his arms.

“Kill me quickly, I don’t want to suffer his torment.” Xiao Mengyu said, her voice faint.

“Stop nonsense, you’ll be fine!” Shen Ye said.

Xiao Mengyu looked at him intently, realizing that he wasn’t faking it, and also thought that with his strength, he had come to help, so she couldn’t help but feel a mixture of amusement and admiration.

—Didn’t she have any trump cards?

Controlling her injuries like that, making her aura incredibly weak, was actually a ruse to lure the enemy.

The success or failure originally hinged on this counter-attack.

Unfortunately, man proposes, God disposes; this young man unexpectedly jumped out, wanting to save her.

    That “Skinner” naturally didn’t follow.

Xiao Mengyu was both angry and amused, and couldn’t help but let out a soft snort:

    “Forget it, given that you—”

    *Smack*.

Shen Ye delivered a chop to her neck.

Because the opponent was a great swordmaster, he was afraid his strength wasn’t enough, so he put all 7 attribute points into strength.

    8.3 strength.

Chopping an almost-dead girl on the neck, although the girl’s strength was considerable, she was indeed severely injured and had not defended herself against him.

The girl’s eyes widened suddenly, and she spat out:

    “You—”

She couldn’t hold on any longer, her head tilted, and she fainted.

“It’s nothing, I just don’t want you to see my secret.” Shen Ye said.

He caught the sword with one hand, held Xiao Mengyu with the other, and used the “dodge” of “Deer Walk in Moonlight” to run a few steps along the wall, crashed through another window, and rushed into the next room.

Fortunately, his agility now exceeded 10!

Otherwise, carrying a person while performing such a movement, he would have fallen directly.

As soon as Shen Ye landed, he immediately activated the “rush” of “Deer Walk in Moonlight”, kicked open the room door, and entered the corridor.

    “Door!”

    He shouted urgently.

A door immediately appeared in the corridor.

Shen Ye carried Xiao Mengyu and crashed in.

    “Disperse! Disperse!”

    The door disappeared with it.

    The next second.

A figure landed in the room, paused, and like a shadow gliding on the ground, floated along the broken door into the corridor.

Just one step late, missing the scene of the door disappearing.

The man saw only an empty corridor.

    This created an empirical illusion.

    “Huh? Hiding?”

The man was first surprised, then immediately giggled.

“You probably don’t know, but the entire hotel is filled with my eyes and ears, so you plan to play hide-and-seek with me.”

    “How interesting.”

He took out a white handkerchief, wiped the crimson from his fingers, and said casually:

    “Alright, I’ll play with you.”

“Now I’ll count down, and when I reach 1, I’ll start looking for you.”

    “10,”

    “9,”

    “…”
