Chapter 39: The Underground Elevator
by SunflowerThe other information combat room was relatively empty. The tables, chairs, and benches were piled up randomly, and there were traces of people having slept on the floor.
“Let’s stay here.” Lin Xian dragged a stool out and looked at KIKI. “You rest first.”
KIKI looked at the dirty floor with disgust. On the other side was a command and combat platform with more than a dozen screens and information equipment. However, in the case of a major power outage, these electronic devices were not even as valuable as a piece of bread.
Her eyes lit up, and she walked over with great interest. “Hey, bad guy, can you move these things to the carriage and modify an information center for me to use?”
“Information center?”
Lin Xian’s heart moved. He had noticed when he was outside that there was a sentry warning system in this base, but the entire system was very complicated, and it was not something he could easily dismantle and move.
“It’s easy to say, but how do we move it back…”
KIKI pouted. “You’re stupid. Isn’t there a freight railway outside? It must be connected to the railway of Beiwang Station.”
“I know.” Lin Xian smiled bitterly. “What I mean is, we’re all trapped in the fog and can’t get out. We don’t even have time to escape, so how can we have a chance to move things?”
“Uh… that’s true.” KIKI said dejectedly. Then she stretched and looked at Lin Xian with tired eyes.
“I can’t take it anymore. I need to rest for a while.”
Lin Xian found a corner and sat down, ignoring her. He knew that KIKI was extremely weak at this time.
Whether it was Qian Yu or Tang Hai, Lin Xian knew that they must have their own thoughts. In this environment, everyone was thinking about sacrificing others to save themselves. The reason why these people were so polite to him and KIKI now was entirely because they were both ability users.
Once everyone escaped from the fog, Lin Xian would be their biggest threat.
Of course, there must be people who wanted to rely on Lin Xian and KIKI as a big tree. It was just that everyone’s life and death were uncertain now. There were only two days left before the polar night. It was still unknown whether they could survive.
“Logically speaking, there should be a backup power source or a generator in a place like this.” Lin Xian looked at the survivors in the hall outside who were lighting candles on the ground. This showed that there was still a complete ventilation system here, but the power had been completely lost.
“It’s in that armory. It stinks,”
KIKI sat down next to Lin Xian, leaned her head on his shoulder, and fell asleep.
Lin Xian looked back at this girl, his expression a little complicated.
She had clearly fainted after using her ability twice against the big insect yesterday, but today she had held on until now with a calm expression. She was very smart. If others knew that her ability could not last long, then Qian Yu and Tang Hai would not be so afraid of them. Even if Lin Xian also showed his ability, the pressure he showed was obviously not as shocking as KIKI’s.
Thinking of her pretending to be asleep for three days, Lin Xian even began to guess what this girl’s identity was. How could a rich man’s daughter have such a tenacious character?
As night fell, whether it was the various convoys in the courtyard of the outpost outside or inside the air-raid shelter, everything was quiet.
No one deliberately made a sound. This night was destined to be sleepless, not only because of the fear of the dark night, but also because everyone was preparing to rush out of the fog tomorrow, which was a plan of life and death.
Lin Xian did not rest, but put his hand on the combat platform and activated his Mechanical Heart to start the connection.
But he soon realized that this command system was not just a set of servers and information equipment, but an integrated hub that connected the entire outpost system.
The vastness of this system exceeded his expectations, and his energy was quickly draining. Lin Xian was shocked. Just as he was about to stop the coverage of his Mechanical Heart, he suddenly found a strange place. That was, below this underground fortification, there was actually a secret elevator.
And at this time, that elevator was moving downwards!
Lin Xian frowned and immediately got up to look at the hall outside. There was no movement.
Then where did this elevator come from?
And this underground fortification had no electricity, so how could this elevator still be used?
“Backup power?”
Lin Xian looked at the sleeping KIKI and remembered that she had said that there was a set of backup generators in the armory.
Sensing the abnormality, Lin Xian’s heart immediately became cautious. The first person he thought of was Tang Hai.
In fact, both he and Qian Yu felt that this Tang Hai was a little strange. Although everyone agreed with his purpose, both Lin Xian and Qian Yu felt that the timing of his appearance was too coincidental.
Lou Shasha arrived the day before yesterday, and Qian Yu and his group arrived a day earlier. Logically speaking, Tang Hai must have known about them as soon as they arrived, but he only came out today, and at the risk of being attacked by a zombie tide.
But as a local, Tang Hai directly brought everyone to this shelter that was obviously safer than the square, which also dispelled some of everyone’s suspicions.
So although the various teams were suspicious of each other, being in the fog was equivalent to being in the same boat. Tang Hai even opened the door of the underground air-raid shelter, so Lin Xian had to suppress this concern for the time being.
Out of caution, Lin Xian still decided to investigate around.
He then put down KIKI, found a set of discarded sleeping bags for her to lean on, and walked out of the combat room.
The survivors outside looked at Lin Xian with strange gazes. Because he was brought in by Feng Yuming, no one said much. They all seemed a little silent.
Lin Xian ignored these people and walked into the armory again. Sure enough, at the very back, he saw a large set of diesel generators and energy storage systems.
But when he used his ability to investigate, he found that this set of generators had long been damaged and had no oil. He couldn’t help but change his expression.
“What’s going on? There’s clearly no electricity? Could there be other backup energy sources?”
This discovery made him suspicious.
He searched around for a while, and then simply returned to the hangar entrance of the air-raid shelter. At this time, the iron gate was already locked. Lin Xian quietly opened it with his Mechanical Heart and found that dozens of survivors’ cars in the courtyard of the outpost at the foot of the mountain were parked quietly. Many cars had very faint light sources shooting out from the gaps. Indeed, many people did not plan to sleep peacefully, but were prepared to be on guard for a night.
Lin Xian walked around for a while. Not only did he not find the elevator entrance, but he also did not find Tang Hai and Feng Yuming. He didn’t know where the uncle and nephew had gone.
Feeling inexplicably uneasy, Lin Xian closed the iron gate and returned to the combat room again. He took a deep breath. This time, he directly operated his Mechanical Heart with all his strength, trying to use this combat hub to connect the entire base’s passages. Not long after, he felt as if a large amount of his energy had been drained, and his face was a little tired.
But when Lin Xian used the combat center hub to scan the mechanical structure and passages of the entire base, he suddenly opened his eyes, and a sharp and fierce look flashed in his eyes. After a long while, he said coldly,
“Damn!”
Lin Xian’s expression changed greatly, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. After thinking for a moment, he directly picked up KIKI and walked into the armory, locking the door.
The stench in the armory made the sleeping KIKI frown slightly. Lin Xian turned on the flashlight and moved her to the side of the generator at the very back. It was close to the ventilation duct, so the stench was relatively smaller.
Putting down KIKI, Lin Xian turned off the flashlight. Feeling KIKI’s faint breathing in the dark, he began to put his hand on the generator set and scan again.
“Sure enough!”
In the dark, Lin Xian’s expression was solemn, and his heartbeat couldn’t help but speed up a bit.
“It stinks…”
The sleeping KIKI said in a half-dreaming state.
“Little girl.”
Lin Xian pinched KIKI’s small face. At this time, the exhausted KIKI was suddenly pinched awake by Lin Xian. Smelling the stench around her, she frowned and struggled to get up.
“Hey… you!”
Before she could finish her words, Lin Xian covered her mouth.
Click, Lin Xian turned on the flashlight and pointed to the wall next to her with a solemn expression.
“What’s wrong?” Seeing Lin Xian’s expression, KIKI also became serious at this time. She suppressed her consciousness and said, “Is a monster coming?”
Lin Xian’s expression sank. “I think it might be more troublesome than this…”
