Chapter 18: The Roadblock
by SunflowerThe train left the city from Jiang City Main Station, and the surroundings gradually quieted down, with only the light ringing of the tracks echoing.
Lin Xian looked up. The huge cloud mass above Jiang City remained motionless, and every time he looked at it, it was heart-stopping. Many people had seen it, and there was definitely some kind of atmospheric creature inside, far more terrifying than any zombie or strange entity.
But no one knew what it was. For humans, besides cowering in fortresses, there was only fleeing in panic. Who would dare to explore the true appearance of such a world-destroying creature?
After leaving the city, the surrounding scenery gradually turned into mountains and countryside, with much less gray decay, blood, and smoke, giving people the illusion that they had escaped the apocalypse.
Lin Xian had originally thought that he would hardly see anyone along the way.
Unexpectedly, on a dirt road near the railway, several moving cars appeared one after another, mostly off-road jeeps. The few rare sedans were also muddy and fully loaded with belongings, with their drivers frantically stepping on the gas.
Upon seeing a train passing by, the window of one of the off-road vehicles rolled down, and a middle-aged man stuck his head out and shouted, “Holy shit, a train!”
“Awesome!”
Another jeep covered in graffiti opened its sunroof, and a young man with a buzz cut emerged with an AK in his hand, firing a volley into the air.
“Hey!”
“That train, do you have anything to eat or drink? Do you want to join our ‘Oasis’ convoy?!”
The young man shouted at the train, but Lin Xian in the cockpit ignored him, still focusing on operating the train.
“Damn it.”
The young man with the buzz cut, seeing no response, cursed under his breath and sat back down.
“Brother Yong, should we inform Brother Liu Wei ahead?” In the passenger seat, a yellow-haired man said in a muffled voice.
Zhang Dayong looked indifferent: “What for? Are we all going to switch to taking the train?”
The yellow-haired underling in the passenger seat’s eyes widened, and he said with a strange expression, “Brother Yong, the oil.”
Hearing this, Zhang Dayong finally reacted, slapped his thigh, and spat, “Holy shit, that’s right!!”
A train that could run, at most, could have thousands of liters of oil. Even if it didn’t have that much, just a few hundred liters would be enough for their convoy for a day or two.
So he immediately took out the walkie-talkie.
“Brother Wei, Brother Wei, a big guy is heading along the Jiang-Yu line. A train. I estimate it has a lot of oil on it.”
“Hmm, a train?” A hoarse voice came from the walkie-talkie. From the tone, the other party was also interested.
“Yes, I estimate it will pass Yushan in about ten minutes. What do you think…”
“I’ll go block it. Second team, you flank from behind.”
“Okay!”
At this time, about ten kilometers ahead of the convoy, a small convoy was racing along. The leader was a modified Raptor. Liu Wei, with a square face, sat in the back seat with a fierce expression, with a young, heavily made-up girl in his arms.
“Third brother, turn into the fork in the road ahead. A big guy is coming to Yushan Station.”
“Okay, boss!”
The entire convoy, everyone looked to Liu Wei as their leader.
Liu Wei was actually not some big shot in the underworld. Before the apocalypse, he was just a small boss in a wet market. But after the apocalypse, he unexpectedly awakened an ability, which made him a superior person all of a sudden.
In order to seek protection, his former relatives and friends all wagged their tails and begged him. But he was also a smart person. He used his ability to recruit a large number of heavily armed ruthless people, and then waited for others to scavenge for supplies and offer them to him.
In just a few days, he had recruited more than twenty subordinates and lived like a local emperor. Even those high-class beauties who had once looked down on him offered themselves to him. For a time, Liu Wei was in high spirits, singing and feasting every night, extremely pleased with himself.
At this time, hearing his underling’s report that there was a big guy in Jiang City who not only did not ‘pay tribute’, but also ran away under his nose, didn’t this touch his reverse scale? He immediately prepared to be a roadblock… anyway, he was planning to do so when he left Jiang City.
…
On the other side, Lin Xian also frowned when he heard the sound of Zhang Dayong’s rifle. Out of caution, he sped up a little. The smooth railway was much faster than the vehicles driving on the dirt road.
“‘Oasis’ convoy, I just heard them on the radio. Their leader seems to be an ability user too,” Chen Sixuan said with some worry when she heard the gunshots.
“I heard it too, but they’re taking the land route, and we’re taking the railway. We’re not in each other’s way, so we probably won’t run into each other.”
Hearing Chen Sixuan talk about other ability users, Lin Xian was still a little worried.
His train plan had many advantages, but the disadvantages were also very obvious. It was too conspicuous. A mighty train could attract the attention of many survivors.
“We also need to find more teammates. Otherwise, if everyone targets us, it will be difficult to deal with.”
Chen Sixuan glanced at him in surprise, then lowered her gaze.
“I’ve seen the post you sent before. I think if others don’t know your ability, it will be difficult for them to believe your plan.”
“I know.”
Lin Xian said nonchalantly, “Teammates are about quality, not quantity. My ability is not to be a chauffeur for everyone. I won’t just pull anyone onto the train. Unless they are valuable, it’s better not to cause trouble for myself.” He glanced at Chen Sixuan and smiled. “And I have to like them.”
Chen Sixuan’s face inexplicably turned red. She thought Lin Xian was flirting with her, and she suddenly felt a little embarrassed.
“That’s not what I meant.” Lin Xian coughed lightly. “I’m not talking about looks, but character, personality, and so on…”
After his explanation, Chen Sixuan’s face turned even redder. She directly avoided Lin Xian’s gaze and buried her head in the logbook, writing something.
Clang, clang,
The train sped along the flat plain.
Just then, Lin Xian’s enhanced vision saw a damaged small car lying across the tracks at Yushan Station in the distance. The car was placed so neatly that it was obvious at a glance that it was intentional, with the purpose of stopping passing trains.
An ambush!
Lin Xian’s expression turned grim. He shouted at Chen Sixuan beside him, “Go to the back, quick, hold on tight!”
Chen Sixuan also realized that danger was coming. Her expression changed, and she obediently ran to carriage 1 in the back. At this time, she saw the sleeping girl again, so she simply ran over and hugged her as well.
Behind the pillars of the Yushan Station platform, the few people Liu Wei had brought had already ambushed with loaded guns. Hearing the approaching sound of the iron wheels, he stuck his head out to look, only to see that the train showed no signs of slowing down. He was immediately furious and shouted, “Fire! Make this son of a bitch stop!”
The underlings received the order and all appeared from behind the pillars. Holding various long and short guns, they opened fire on the cockpit of the speeding train without a word.
Bang! Bang! Bang, bang, bang! Bang, bang!
For a time, gunshots rang out. Lin Xian in the cockpit gritted his teeth, grabbed the handle, and ducked down. His mind controlled the train, but instead, it sped up!
Damn you, the reason I chose to drive a train is to smash all these fucking roadblocks to pieces
