    Chapter 6 “Home”

Jiang He’s residence was in the wealthy district, full of detached villas, with lights still on in many windows. From time to time, patrol teams in uniform could be seen, with long, slender metal rods hanging from their waists.

Every time he encountered a patrol team, Su Chen could feel their clear, scrutinizing gaze, accompanied by suspicion.

But his expression remained calm, showing no timidity, and his clothes matched the district’s style, so no one came up to question him.

Coming out of this wealthy district, the streets widened considerably.

They also became increasingly dim, with the yellow light of the street lamps flickering uncertainly. The areas between them were unusually wide, and some shadows were almost completely dark.

His gaze fell on a car parked by the side of the road.

Su Chen walked up and knocked on the window. The driver glanced at him, seemingly puzzled, “Su Chen?”

    “It’s me.” He nodded.

The driver looked at his clothes, seemed to recognize him, and hesitated to speak, secretly sighing that the hostess was getting more and more playful.

    “Let’s go.”

The car door opened, and Su Chen sat in the back, looking around. It was much like the structure of a car.

The driver’s palm swept across the dashboard, and with a humming sound, the car body vibrated slightly, and the scenery on both sides rapidly receded as it ascended into the air.

“…Hmm, going to the Outer District, take the C-7 air route, it’s very clear now…” The driver mumbled. Through the window, Su Chen couldn’t see clearly below, but the light source above his head became much brighter.

    Whoosh–

The G-force made Su Chen lean back. He glanced out the window, only then realizing that those continuous light strips were indeed steel tracks, which some kind of vehicle must use during the day.

“Outside the city is a boundless mist. Anything can be in the mist, mutated monsters, machinery…”

He tried to recall some relevant information about this world, but the original body didn’t know much. Those inexplicable mists seemed to block everything.

Did this world undergo some change to become like this, or was it always like this from the beginning?

There was no memory of this in the original body’s mind, only that it had been like this since his birth.

“However…” Su Chen frowned slightly. In the original body’s memory, he was not a native of Southwind City but came from another place when he was five or six years old. The memories in his mind were already very vague.

“That is to say, the outside world is not absolutely dangerous, but it’s also not something I can touch.”

After an unknown period, he felt a slight tremor in the car, and it had landed.

“We’re here.” The driver was very polite.

“Thank you.” Su Chen got out of the car, and the cool air rushed into his lungs.

Here, far from artificial light sources, it was even darker. He could barely make out his surroundings. On both sides were densely packed, shabby shanties, with many figures moving about, and the road was bumpy.

This was where he lived, on the edge of the Outer District, commonly known as the slum.

Following his memory, Su Chen found several familiar landmarks and headed towards his home.

Under the special conditions of the outside world, people who lived idly were almost not allowed to exist in the city.

Whether a family or an individual, they must have usable value. Being allowed to stay unconditionally until adulthood was already Southwind City’s greatest mercy.

After adulthood, they either served as cannon fodder exploring the mist, or if they were lucky enough to return, they could survive for half a year.

“Su, Su Chen?” A slightly familiar voice came from the shadows.

Su Chen stopped. His “home” seemed to be reached.

“Why are you dressed like this?”

As if confirming his identity, several ragged figures, none of whom seemed very old, sprang out from the side.

Huang Peng… Hei Gou… names flooded into his mind one by one.

“You… entered Southwind Academy?” One of them asked carefully.

Thoughts flashed through Su Chen’s mind. Although the original body had lived here since childhood, due to environmental factors, he could only be said to be “playing pretend” with most people.

Seeing his silence, a sigh of relief could be vaguely heard, and one of them teased:

“I said before that it’s not impossible to trade your body for a future, but you’re a man after all. Southwind Academy is not a place we can enter.”

“It’s okay if you didn’t get in. Didn’t you say that woman is pretty too? It’s not a loss.” “Exactly, and you got these clothes. They must be worth something. Lend them to me to wear…”

As he spoke, someone reached out, pulling at his coat, seemingly wanting to strip it off.

Su Chen frowned, his arm vibrated slightly, and the person who reached out stumbled backward, falling crookedly to the ground with an “ouch,” then angrily shouted, “What are you doing?”

The sudden disturbance silenced the surroundings.

“Heh, after sleeping with that slut, do you really think you’re a superior person?”

“Alright, he didn’t get what he wanted, and he’s in a bad mood. Don’t provoke him. Go back to sleep.”

    “…”

The crowd dispersed, and the surrounding sounds gradually subsided. Su Chen’s face was indifferent. In the darkness, he accurately found his “home” and pulled open the tattered cloth.

Following his memory, he found a lamp. After the faint light came on, he felt much more comfortable.

Calling it “home” was an overstatement; it was just a few sheets of iron patched together, with extremely limited space. He could only curl up to sleep.

There was still solidified white porridge in the small pot on the ground.

Shaking his head, he didn’t care, just crouched there.

“Brother Su Chen…” The tattered cloth was lifted, and a small figure came in, her stomach bulging, her face covered in black ash.

Seeing Su Chen, she seemed stunned, standing still without speaking.

“…Little Pigeon?” Su Chen tried calling out.

“Ah…” She jumped. “Brother Su Chen, you… you look… quite handsome…”

She mumbled, then cautiously glanced left and right, and pulled out a packet of things from under her relatively clean clothes, giving it to Su Chen.

“These are for you,” she whispered.

“Where did you get this food?” Su Chen looked at the canned goods in the bag. Southwind City only distributed two meals a day, barely enough to fill their stomachs.

The items in the bag were all well-packaged canned goods, which were quite valuable to them.

“I’ll tell you a secret, don’t tell anyone else…” Little Pigeon leaned over, her eyes sparkling, and whispered, “I’m leaving here soon…”

“Where to?” Su Chen couldn’t help but frown.

“…Sister Xiaoxi… will take me away…” She lowered her head, seemingly a little guilty, and stammered, “But, she can only take me for now…”

    Sister Xiaoxi?

A figure appeared in Su Chen’s mind: a person with a smudged face, withered hair, and a serious expression.

She was also a member of the slum, but now, she should be called Bai Fengxi.

This person had lucked out somehow, apparently favored by a big shot in the city, and was sent to Southwind Academy, renamed Bai Fengxi.

This matter was a secret, almost unknown here.

He wasn’t too familiar with her; their interactions mostly revolved around Little Pigeon. Little Pigeon was the one who told him these things.

Although the original owner kept quiet, he was somewhat stimulated by this, which led him to Jiang He’s bed.

“That’s good,” Su Chen said, relieved.

“Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to take you with me when I leave,” Little Pigeon quickly added.

“Don’t worry about me, just take care of yourself,” Su Chen said gently. Little Pigeon had also come here with a large group of vagrants a few years ago, and the original owner had taken good care of her.

She made a serious expression, indicating that she wasn’t joking, then turned and left.

Su Chen chuckled, put the items aside, and opened the panel.
